“Needs attention to be a great place.”
Reviewed January 5, 2013 via mobile

Esperanza Inn could be a great place. The owners need to spend more time on cleaning and decorating. People with pet allergies be warned. The owners have rescued about 10 cats and 1 small dog that live at the inn, mostly outside. The cats are house trained but dog is not. Cats own the outside furniture and have soiled them badly. Towels and bedding are mismatched and low quality. No hot water in kitchen. Kitchen glasses are mismatched and not much available (3 wine glasses ) My advice to them: take the pets home, and do a major cleaning, Remove window screens and wash them. Decorate the inside common area. I would recommend this Inn to people if these things are done. Other than that, the location is walking distance close to Esperanza shopping & food. Drive to beaches, they have ground floor and 2nd floor rooms, I would come back if the pets were gone.

Thanks to this guest for sharing his thoughts. I'm surprised however, since we hosted them for five days and heard nothing but happy comments. The children had a great time with the pets and I'm sure it only enhanced their visit. No, the eight week old abused foster puppy is not house trained. Eight weeks. Abused puppy. Please find some patience for her.
Our website clearly states that we work closely with the Humane Society and rescue animals. Why choose a property with animals if you don't like them? I'm terribly sorry to hear that you won't come back till the animals are gone because they aren't leaving. Also why stay for five nights if you're not happy? Future guests everywhere- Your innkeepers only want to please you and if there is something we can do to make your visit more comfortable we will leap at the chance to help. In this case we could have found other, more sterile accommodations. Let us know. Help us to help you, otherwise we are all disappointed in the end.
Thanks for including the photo of our cat Salma. It's great to see her, and I'm sure all of her fans will enjoy the pic.
The "cinderblock desk” was made by a local artist - Eddie Jolly - and we find it to be both attractive and useful for its purpose.
At count this morning, there were 11 mismatched wine glasses on the shelf. Everything is mismatched and will stay that way. Towels and linens are purchased in a department store. Mismatched yes, low quality no. We aren't going for the sterile hotel vibe. We want the Inn to feel like the laid back beach house that it is.
To sum up - we rescue animals and animals are on the property. For those of you with an open heart please come visit and enjoy. We can't wait to see you

I can't say enough good things about J & Lisa (& Brian!). We had such a wonderful experience at this inn - we arrived early and our room was ready anyway (thanks Brian!). We got tons of great advice from J & Lisa about places to go and how to get there. One morning our car wouldn't start and J was right there with jumper cables even though we had rented it elsewhere. The location can't be beat, within walking distance of the Malecon. The room had a constant, wonderful breeze and we never had to turn the AC on. The only complaint I have (and it's not even a complaint because it was a constant source of amusement for my friends and I) was the roosters. They are loud and they don't know when sunrise actually is. But it's a small price to pay to stay in paradise.

We stayed here over the Thanksgiving Break 2012. Wow. Talk about serious about being helpful! Both Lisa and J were forever giving of advice, techniques for quick enjoyment of the island and constantly working to be sure that our stay was comfortable. Lisa was great about giving solutions to any travel problems, J was great about ordering a taxi if needed or sharing a little island history and cultural analysis and the quick travel to the malecon or the small grocery store by foot made this a wonderful location. The only tick is not against Esperanza Inn but purely by location in the Pacific and commercial service limitations, the internets are limited. Bring your own if you can or expect to slow down with the limited connection and enjoy the island pace! :-) I hope that you love your stay there as much as I did!

Room Tip: I am certain that any room is going to have a great feel, just choose one that fits your size needs.

We have stayed here twice. You can't beat the location, the owners are very special & care about their environment and involvement on their island. Every room is a winner and comes with its own "guard" kitty at your door! The communal areas are very relaxing and the malecon & ocean are steps away. We will return!

Room Tip: Look on their web site, they give good reviews of the rooms and it all depends on how many are stayi...

Nice hosts, lovely grounds, good rates. Lots of charming, rescued kitties. Half block from restaurants and malecon/sea. Neighborhood setting makes you feel a part of Isla Vieques. Rent a car at least part of your trip to visit lovely beaches.

Located just off the Malecon this was a great choice. Esperanza is a small place so wherever you stay you are not to far from the "action". For me the two main things that made it a great stay were the owners and the communal kitchen area. Lisa and J were great source of help and info and as I had no phone booked me on various things and were always about for a chat. I found Vieques quite expensive so their kitchen saved a few bucks.

Do not expect Hilton style facilities as you will not find this on Vieques (unless you stay at the W) but atmosphere is very cosy. They run an animal sanctuary on site which means lots of cats which I had no problem with. There are loads of beach items to borrow and a shower to get changed in if you need a last minute swim after check out time.

Bring ear plugs are drink yourself into oblivion as chickens are noisy and get up before you do.

Lots of talk on here about hiring a car being essential. This is rubbish. if you are reasonably fit and like a bit of exercise you can hire a bike and tour the whole island. yes it is hot but great fun. Cycled to Blue Beach, Playa Grande and Green beach (long ride). If you are a bit older or like to remain horizontal when on holiday then get a car.

Best beaches for me where Navio (waves) and Blue beaches (wilderness). Best snorkeling: cayo afuera (which you can swim to with flippers saving 35$), esperanza pier (squid, barracuda, thousands of fish), Blue beach rocks (decent coral, turtles)

Did Biobay tour with Abe and VAC both of whose guides were knowledgable and cool.

Esperanza Inn embodies the spirit of Vieques - I wouldn't stay anywhere else if you want to experience this island. The staff and owners are super friendly and considerate. Our room was super comfortable, clean and spacious. The Inn is literally half a block from the ocean and the malecon but it's way better than being on the (malecon) main strip which can be very loud b/c of all the bars, etc. Esperanza Inn has a buffer of jungle between the loud bars and the inn - which provides a great sound barrier from the loud music but also (and even better!) an AWESOME soundtrack of tropical birds and tree frogs
Love this place - coming back asap!!!
