“Mary and Hector, Yeah!”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

My wife and I stayed in The Mango casita in late March/early April. We couldn't have been happier. It's located at the back of the property and elevated. The elevation makes for great views of the entire property and of course the ocean. Comfortably appointed it's perfect for two people to just relax. It does have A/C, a small microwave and frdge. Also beach chairs and a cooler are provided. We were able to visit the other units and they are more spacious and would be better suited for multiple couples, groups, etc. There is a pool/hot tub available and they are kept clean and comfortable. To the right of the horse corral there's a path down to the beach, although it's not really a swimming beach it's great for walking and exploring. If you walk far enough you'll come upon a black sand beach, which is great for swimming and secluded enjoyment of the perfect weather and water. Also on the property is a dining/catering facility where a local chef cooks for the public on Sunday and Monday nights. It was arguably the best meal we had while on Vieques. Highly recommended bluff side dining. There is also a walking trail over to Blue Horizon, which is the neighboring resort. It's very nice as well. As you will become very familiar there are horses all over the immediate area as well as corralled on the property. They are friendly and will accept grass picked for them. There is also one feisty, lovable resident cat prowling the grounds. I affectionately gave him the nickname El Guapo. While sitting by the pool it wasn't uncommon for him to jump up on my lap and hang out. He wasn't annoying to any extent, just present and willing to take a scratch if offered. Finally, the hosts Mary and Hector. They live on the property and are available at any time. They were most welcoming and made us feel at home. I really enjoyed their company out by the pool and in the screened gazebo. They were more than willing to sit down and direct us to points of interest on the island and suggest options for dining, recreation and shopping. I was very happy to meet them and hope to keep in touch with them. If you can't tell I'd recommend Mary and Hector and Hector's by the Sea and I'm hoping I'll make it back to visit with them soon.

What an awesome experience staying at Hector's April 1st-April 4th. We stayed in the Casita Vistamar, the one closest to the ocean and the horses were just steps from our room. We explored up & down the rocky shore & saw crabs, a live large conch shell, & wild horses. Our room was large and bright with a microwave, fridge, & kitchen sink & we purchased coffee & supplies at the green store in Esperanza. Hector and Mary were great hosts & gave us tips about the area. We discovered rain can cause unique experiences as it did one afternoon when we saw a large water spout sort of like a tornado on the ocean a little ways out in front of Hector's. We enjoyed wine in the hot tub under a canopy of stars which was heavenly.

My then fiancé and I stayed at Hector's in June of 2012 (just catching up on reviews I needed to do now). The overall experience was amazing. I am usually a person who will only stay at chains and only highly rated B&B, Hector's did not disappoint. The best part of the place is that it is an intimate experience. You are not sharing the B&B with 20+ people, more like a handful! It's very clean and well kept, the pool is beautiful, you can see horses everywhere, and it's a beach walk away to one of the nicest black sand beaches. My now husband and I will be back for sure!

Summary
If there was one place in Vieques that combines peace, relaxation, comfort—yet with proximity to almost everything of note on Vieques—it would be Hector's.

The Good
- Pool, hot tub, short stroll to (an essentially private) beach
- Quiet, and only a 5 minute drive to Esperanza
- Clean, comfortable, room; kitchenette; small dining area

The Bad
- The driveway has been washed out several times and has extremely deep ruts. It’s easily (albeit slowly) navigated with a Jeep or other high-carriage car; I wouldn't try it in a sedan.
- No Wifi

Review
Situated on a large piece of property directly on the water, but with plenty of space to stroll around, Hector's has three generous bungalow type lodges, two put together as a duplex and the third (the one my wife and I stayed in) on the second floor of a utility building (The Mango, Casita 1 on their website).

The grounds include a pristine in-ground pool, a raised hot-tub with a view of the ocean, plenty of space to walk or stroll, a large cabana style party/dining building that is open for use by guests (never used as a commercial bar, as far as we could tell), and a short path down to a narrow beach perfect for beachcombing (though not swimming). Beach towels, beach chairs, and a cooler are provided for guest use.

Our room “The Mango” had a comfortable queen bed, a dresser, a bistro table with two chairs and matching place settings with utensils, a kitchenette with microwave, coffee maker, and refrigerator, and a large bathroom with shower. It was spotless and had a good amount of room for two adults to move around comfortably. There was a deck with two comfortable chairs and a hammock (note, however, it receives a lot of sun). There's enough parking for a dozen cars or more (since you more or less park in a corner of the enormous yard). There is no TV or WiFi (we found we didn’t need either). Hector’s 3 horses live on the premises, sometimes in their paddock, and sometimes freely roaming the grounds (often eating up the fruit dropped from the trees overnight by our stairs).

Hector's is just a mile away from Esperanza, so you can reach the action in under five minutes. If horseback riding is of interest, Hector's shares a fence-line with Esperanza Riding Company (you can slip through the fence to get to it). Isabella Segunda and the airport are a short drive away.

Hector and his wife Mary live on the premises but were rarely seen, though Hector was easily accessible for questions at several different times during the day. No meals are served (but you can make most anything in the kitchenette). We’d stay here again in a heartbeat as our #1 preference on the island.

Room Tip: The Mango is more private (separate from the other two casitas), but you can't go wrong in any r...

We stayed at Hector's in May 2012 and had the best trip! We were in the second story apartment and loved the ocean views from the hammock. We had a quick stop at the grocery market in Esperanza and then the room was equipped with everything you needed for breakfast in the morning then we were close enough to town to get a great meal every night. Mary and Hector were great hosts, they helped us when we needed it, including renting a car that was waiting for us at the airport and very convenient, but weren't overbearing at all. We did have a nice night of drinks with them the last night in their beautiful pavilion and enjoyed hearing stories about how Hector's came to be. I highly recommend staying at Hector's to anyone visiting Vieques, it's your own little slice of heaven!

My wife and I spent here the last week in December, 2013. Mary was extremely helpful with all the travel arrangements (a rental car was already waiting for us) and email communication was prompt and friendly. Hector is an entertaining guy who made sure to tell us all about the beautiful beaches, local restaurants and other attractions. He was also very attentive to all our needs.
The property is perfectly located near Esperanza. Yet, it is quiet and you are surrounded by beautiful nature, roaming horses, and breathtaking views. Stargazing while sitting in a jacuzzi and having DonQ is absolutely a must. A swim in the pool is very refreshing if you are too lazy to go to to beach:)))
Our casita was spacious and very clean. The beds are comfortable. Our room had all the appliances needed to spend a perfect vacation: refrigerator, coffee maker, and a microwave. It is an ideal location to get away from the crowds. However, Esperanza offers a variety of restaurants and bars, including dancing on the weekends.
I would definitely recommend Hector's By the Sea to my family and friends and my wife and I would love to go there again.

Mary and Hector couldn't have been kinder, more welcoming or accommodating to us and their hospitality was only rivaled by the incredible location of their property. I don't think I've ever seen more beautiful sunsets anywhere in the world. Horses roam the area and everywhere you look there is another unique and breath-taking view of the ocean. We particularly enjoyed time on the patio of our casita, swinging in the hammock and drinking coffee in the mornings. There is a large open air dining area overlooking the ocean that is catered for dinner two nights a week which was a special treat. This is relatively new offering and the service was a bit challenged but given the fantastic location and the fact that we only had to walk across the yard to get there, it was a definite thumbs up. We also really liked exploring and watching horses on the beach which was so unspoiled and strikingly beautiful, complete with hand-build rock cairns, lots of sea glass and intriguing tidal pools. The swimming pool and hot tub are pristine and lovely and were a welcome respite from a day at the beach. Some folks have commented on the road up to the property, but we didn't find it difficult to drive at all. The location is very convenient to Esperanza and many restaurants and beaches but you feel a world away when you are at Hector's. All in all, an exceptional experience and a real pleasure to make the acquaintance of such terrific folks.

Room Tip: We loved our casita near the ocean cliff and the swimming pool.
