Owner description: Get off the beaten path and experience Vieques the way locals do; from the back of a smooth-gaited Paso horse! Everyone will tell you, there is no better way to explore the wilder side of our island. Our guided two-hour ride takes you through the hills, open meadows, woods, river bottoms and beaches of the Esperanza area. You'll even get to try out the paso (a smoother version of the trot)! We offer rides at 8:00 am and 4:00 pm; to avoid mid-day heat. The cost is $80 per person (group ride), cash only. Private tours and kid-friendly rides also available. Reservations are required and don't forget your camera! Please refer to our website for more information.

There were two other people besides us and our guide on our 4:00 ride in late December. The horses are well-trained and the diversity of terrain on the tour keeps things interesting. We rode down the Malecon, on the beach, through the jungle, and in a pasture and even got to run a little bit. My husband was directly behind the guide and said she had lots of great information about the island, but unfortunately, I couldn't hear a word of it at the back of the group. At one point, the guide stopped and offered to use our camera to take pictures of us on our horses with the ocean in the background. We were pleased with this company and would recommend them to a friend. It is particularly convenient for guests staying at Hector's by the Sea, as it is directly next door.

Elizabeth our guide and Emily who rode behind gave us a terrific experience and the ability to see vieques in an entirely new way. You can tell the horses are well cared for and we were paired up with mounts that suited us well. We went all over from the beach and up into the hills then down into the woods finishing up in the horses meadow overlooking the ocean. We will be back!

Gorgeous morning ride! Sunny & pleasant weather. Rode along beach, through Esperanza, back many tropical trails, hills, valleys, and meadows. Finishing up with a beautiful meadow view of beach and island. Zorro and Pepe were smooth and quick. Enjoyed the fast paso fino walk and some cantering. Christie was a very knowledgeable guide about nature and local history. Great ride for us and would do it again without hesitation! Vieques is wonderful.

...made possible by friendly, hardworking staff that know their animals and their business.

They made an effort to keep us informed during sketchy weather and worked with us to get our ride in before leaving the island, reassuring us that we were dealing with good people.

We're both novice riders and the horses Elizabeth and Chrissy chose for us were well-suited to 'newbies'.

The pace was unhurried, the horses responsive, and the conversation friendly. And, as said in other reviews, the views were stunning, revealing features of the island not readily apparent from the roadways or the beaches. Wrapping up the ride, coming in through the pasture and seeing the rest of the herd against the sky and sea was truly memorable.

Definitely a worthwhile investment. Highly recommend.

This was our third ride with ERC and the best one yet! This year we did the 4:30 ride and it was gorgeous!! But let me back up a bit. The whole family went this time – myself, my husband, my sister and my two daughters. They provided Troxels (very good riding helmets) for my 7 and 9 year olds to wear and the guide Laurie / Lori (not sure how to spell it) was very thorough in explaining safety to the girls. We've been around horses a lot so they knew the drill but good to hear it again. She paired each person up with a horse and called us by the horses name from there on. That made it fun.

You start off on the packed dirt and paved road which is good to get your bearings if you are not 100% comfortable on a horse. Then you head into town. After you leave town – it is all horse trails through pastures, woods, over hills and into valleys. You come across horses hiding in the brush eating their snacks all during the ride. The views are like nothing else you will see from the beaches or in town. It is beautiful! The horses are all well trained and well cared for so they respond well to commands. Before you know it you are heading for the beach and that was awesome! As we came off the beach up into the meadow, the sun was starting to set and the views were breathtaking. Am grateful my horse Willy didn’t get spooked by the camera as I was taking so many pictures the whole ride.

The pace was slow and relaxing but a few times she let us go a bit and sped up the horses to go faster. And at the very end she let us run the horses through the pasture and the other horses that were just grazing at the time with no riders joined in too. My kids were beyond thrilled. It was perfect!!

Things to note – payment is cash only and at the end of the ride so be prepared. Bring jeans and sneakers if you plan to ride. And while the morning ride is a good way to get your day started the afternoon ride is amazing. It is my new favorite time to ride. You probably will have weak legs after the ride so don’t plan a hike after a 2 hour ride. Do get a reservation in advance. And feel free to ask questions along the route. They guides are very knowledgeable about the plants, people, architecture and culture of Vieques so you will learn a lot.

A ride with ERC will certainly be an annual tradition for our family.
