“a little bit of Vieques history”
Reviewed August 9, 2011

For those that have never been to the small island of Vieques, it's located at the East of the main island of Puerto Rico. It will take about 1:30 hour ferry trip (check for different departing hours) with the regular ferry, which will cost you about $5 per person, and almost two (2) hours with the car/passengers ferry from $15 to $20 without passengers. Both of them leaving from the town of Fajardo. You'll arrive at a small terminal where taxi cab drivers or tour guides will greet you. From there is about a 15 minute drive to the "Fortin Conde de Mirasol Museum". It's located on the top of a hill overlooking the small "Pueblo" area where all of the important commercial activities are held. But, once this used to be a defensive post for the Spanish Goverment against other Countries and even against pirates. The first time that I visited this place was almost 16 years ago, and to my surprise it was still well maintained and preserved. This once a fort, now a museum has a permanent and small, but beautiful collection of art pieces and historic artifacts. Also, sometimes they have exhibitions from around the World to showcase them in this museum. You can buy souvenirs from a gift shop inside if you like to have something to remember your visit to the fort like I did. It will take you over one (1) hour to take the guided tour through the entire museum. But, if you are a person who likes history, cultural learning, or sightseeing this is a good place to visit during your stay in Vieques, Puerto Rico.
