Unfortunately, that is not the Blue Beach of yesteryear. Seems like many others, seeking for the same type of paradise, found themselves at one of my favorite Vieques beaches.

While its beauty will never vanish (unless people start acting like pigs), it is not the tucked-away cove I once loved. It is now quite popular with tourists and locals alike. With them, Blue Beach’s magic has disappeared in my eyes.

Why the 4 stars, then? Because it is not a crowded mess yet. I would still go back in a heartbeat. However, only if I want to bathe at a beautiful spot. That’s it. It is not a place to marvel at something special anymore.

While in Vieques, the fun thing to is go beach hopping. There are several amazing beach options but the one beach which I love the most because of its pristine blue shallow waters and white sand is Blue Beach aka in Spanish as Navio Beach (not a direct translation). To go beach hopping, rent a Jeep, beach chairs a cooler filled with local beer Medalla and burn in the sun while taking dips into the blue waters. That is Blue Beach Paradise.

When you first drive over the little bridge you can not believe your eyes, clear blue water, bright white sand, a dream for sure.

La Chiva (blue beach) is a perfect white sand, turquoise water beach with some great snorkeling off the left side. ( We parked at marker 15. the road was closed beyond that. ) We were able to find a tree to hide from the sun. The snorkeling has lots of fish and corals but it is tricky! The water around the point and beyond is shallow (4 - 10 feet) and there are sea urchins everywhere with very long spikes. You have to be a confident snorkeller and be able to move to a deep spot to clear your mask.
