“LOVED Hacienda Tamarindo”

Charming hotel - Excellent customer service, I can't express how helpful the staff was in pre arrival info. The island of Vieques is a perfect get away. We loved the combination of empty beaches, and delicious cuisine. Definitely rent a car, but watch out for horses in the road. And definitely take a trip to the bio bay - It is magical!

Hacienda Tamarindo was a wonderful place to experience Vieques.
It is ideally situated, in that it's near the town of Esperanza but not too near. The breakfasts were very tasty and the specials each morning offer a variety of selections. We loved the fact that we were a five minute walk from the nearest beach which was often empty. This is the kind of place and island for people who aren't interested in big crowds and even larger resorts. It is very low key. The furnishings are lovely and tasteful. Joey, at the front desk, was particularly helpful. When I asked him where he would go for dinner he steered us to a place where we had a really good local experience. The coolers, towels and chairs in the room were very useful, especially the coolers which really did keep things icy cold with the help of the icemaker available 24/7 in the lobby. The honor bar is helplful when you just didn't find the time to stop somewhere for a cold drink. If you like small places to stay, Vieques is the island for you and Hacienda Tamarindo is the place to stay.

This was the perfect getaway! I work in the busy world of the hospitality industry and was ready for a little R & R myself and found Hacienda Tamarindo to do all of that and more! They were very helpful at the front desk with tips and places to see while on Vieques and every morning they would help you get off to a great start with a scrumptious breakfast ~ try the special of the day (they are GREAT!) They outfit the rooms with fun and classy decor and coolers (you will have to pick up a cold 6 pack of Medalla- the local beer), beach towels, and beach chairs. Very handy, considering you will be relaxing on the beautiful beaches all day. I know how hard it is to run and maintain a successful hotel and I am very picky when it comes to traveling because I know all there is to know about this business, and let me tell you that they know what they are doing down there in Vieques and I wouldn't stay anywhere else but Hacienda Tamarindo on my future trips to the island. Cheers!

Hacienda Tamarindo was everything we hoped it would be - and turned out to be a lot more. While our first-floor room just down the hall from the front desk was a little noisy early in the morning (tile floors don't absorb much noise), by the second day of our week there, we were up and about long before people started showing up at the desk. The room was large, clean and nicely decorated (with, of all things, items from Burlington, Vt.). Burr Vail, the owner, was a treat (make sure you make time for his island orientation - it's well worth the hour), the library (with free internet access and plenty of things to read) is a nice place to relax in the evening, and the breakfast was large, varied and served on a terrace on the second floor - beautiful. It was the perfect base to explore the island. Make CERTAIN you rent a four-wheel drive. No matter where you stay, you'll need one to get to the beaches, which are spectacular. And, make certain you take the Biobay kayak tour (there's a reputable tour agency at the end of the lane leading to Tamarindo). The Biobay is an experience beyond description.

This was our second time staying at the Hacienda Tamarindo. I would definitely stay there again. Both times we stayed in a Deluxe Caribbean room - large room, bathroom and a wonderful patio facing the Caribbean. Between the hotel and the sea is a lot a land with trees and ponds -- attracts lots of wild horses and birds. Fun to watch from the patio. Barkley the sheepdog is wonderful. He tries to connive you into letting him into the Air Conditioned library. He'll appear on the patio, then come visit inside the room. Shaboo the parrot is hysterical. He sits on the stair rail at breakfast whistling "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and shouts "Tickle, Tickle" when he wants to be tickled.

The breakfast is is a full meal and will keep you going until a late lunch or dinner. Our routine was: breakfast at the hotel, then on to one of many gorgeous and deserted beaches. Then go to either Isabel Segunda or Esperanza for lunch, then go to a different beach until sundown. Last time we were in Vieques, the US Navy still kept most beaches blocked. This time we were able to visit Green, Red, Blue beaches along with Navio and Sun Bay. Our favorite was the one between Red and Blue -- not sure of the name. Involved climbing down a hill.

Our only gripe about our stay had nothing to do with Hacienda Tamarindo, but rather with the neighboring property, Inn on the Blue Horizon. The Blue Horizon had an employee building some sort of housing structure very close to our room. His tools were powered by a generator that was extremely loud and ran on and off starting at 8 AM. We called the Blue Horizon and the guy actually stopped working. Maybe a coincidence?

My friends and I were very happy with our stay at "HacTam." The room and guesthouse were very well-decorated and comfortable. They had everything you needed: beach chairs, beach towels, flashlight, mini-fridge. The boxed lunches were not the tastiest, but it was very convenient and worthwhile. They had free internet access which was a nice convenience to check on things at home (if you have to) or research things on the island. We loved the breakfast. The pool was gorgeous and I love that they don't have rules about how late you can swim (it was great for late night dips before bed).

Our room was near the kitchen (#27) and like other people have mentioned it was noisy in the morning as they prepared breakfast (in the room with the two twins - it was OK in the master bedroom).

The service was pretty good overall, but could have been a little better. There were a few issues ... nothing huge but it could have been handled slightly better.

The location was great- just far enough from "the strip" to feel like a getaway yet close enough to walk if necessary (bring those flashlights at night!!)

This is one of our all time favorite places that we have stayed. Burr and his staff have thought of everything you might need for a wonderful, relaxing, beach get-away, all the way down to the fully stocked honor bar, cooler in room and beach chairs to take to the beautiful beaches, to the flash light and umbrella if needed. The food at breakfast was a daily treat but fell in love with Barkley, the resident ever welcoming sheepdog. Loved the parrot too, but not as Kissie as Barkley. Great location on the island. Trade-winds great restaurant with beautiful sunsets. The Marauder sailboat snorkeling trip, the best we have done in the Caribbean, bar none. And Bio Bay,,,what can I say but "oh my god" this was the very best trip of all, do not, repeat do not miss this. Plan on going on a moonless night if possible and prepare for a swim of a lifetime. Can't wait to go back!!

Vieques’ Hacienda Tamarindo offers 17 very special rooms, each lovingly and creatively designed and decorated by owner, Linda Vail -- her swan song after over 20 years as a commercial interior designer. Each guest room and public space is unique; imaginatively spiced with a lifetime’s accumulation of art, antiques, and collectibles. An ancient Tamarind tree in the lobby atrium majestically rises three stories through the center of the building. Terraces, courtyards, and sitting rooms offer ample space for relaxation and conversation. The Hacienda is perched on a hilltop with spectacular 180 degree views of the Caribbean -- from sunrise to sunset; looking down on the bedazzling, ever-changing myriad of blue, emerald and turquoise waters. Caribbean trade winds and lazy paddle fans keep you cool and comfortable. Here, you can fall asleep to a tree frog serenade and awake to the smell of jasmine on the gentle sea breeze. ... more   less
