“Friendly, helpful, genuine service in a stunning location!”
Reviewed November 14, 2012

Owners and staff were really helpful and genuinely wanted us to get the most out of our visit. The views from the Carribean room and pool were stunning, the breakfast was decent, the rooms were clean and nice, but it is the personal attention to detail throughout the whole hotel and the genuine hospitality and professionalism of the owners and staff that really makes the difference. It's not a big hotel and you can see the personal touches in how they've decorated the place absolutely everywhere and every bit of advice they gave us helped make our stay better. The only possible issue is that it's a 15min walk into town, very hot during the day, dangerous at night due to having to walk on the road and not many street lights, but it's highly recommended that you hire a car anyway so really no problem for most. Some examples of their hospitality: They didn't have anyone taking over the room straight away, so gave us a late checkout at no charge so we could enjoy the pool which we hadn't used yet. And it was election day when we left, so most shops were closed. We'd sorted out our account, but they gave us a bag of chips and a drink to take with us just in case we couldn't get snacks for the ferry ride. Just really nice people. Stay there!

Must stay for a classy island low key feel.
Service and staff are extra ordinary.lot of free gear and stuff for use. Right beside island adventures, bio by tour. We should have stayed longer .only stayed for a night.
Ocean view, nice pool, nice breakfast, walk to private beach, hammocks, cute lobby and library.

So, this review is a little biased because we stayed at Hacienda Tamarino (HT) on the back end of our Caribbean vacation right after the AWESOME stay at Beau Rive on the island of Dominica. So, naturally, everything about this hotel was compared to our other recent stay. But I'll try to stay objective!

Pros:
HT's location just outside of Esperanza is quite a convenient jumping-off point to get to the rest of the small island - everything is within about a 20-minute drive. We did the car-rental option through the hotel at Maritza Car Rental (everyone at Maritza was fantastic - professional and courteous) and it's highly recommended to have a vehicle on the island. Driving is extremely easy and the roads are generally well paved. But watch out for horses.

The common areas of HT are VERY well maintained and charmingly decorated. The honor bar is very convenient, the library is nice, and the views are amazing.

The included breakfasts are solid: typical American-style, done well. And the kitchen is very flexible; I got the impression that if they have the ingredients, they'll make it for you! The packed-lunch option, while handy for the beach, was mediocre. We ordered a packed lunch for the first day on the beach, but soon found out there were lots of easy lunch places all over the island that were better options.

Probably our favorite part about staying at HT, especially the last couple days, was the beautiful pool area. The groundskeeper, who we saw frequently, clearly has a lot of pride in his workmanship that is evident. The landscaping was perfect, the pool was clean and clear, and the views from the pool area were great, especially around sunset. We almost enjoyed lounging around the pool more than the beaches!

Cons:
While the common areas were very nice and antique-y, the rooms (at least ours) is a little bit dated and over-decorated. Not a show-stopper, but it kind of takes away from the overall feel of the hotel.

A final thought:
Our interaction with the "staff" at the hotel (Ivan and the girls at the front desk) was very positive and they were extremely friendly. Linda and Burr are interesting; not "bad", just interesting. It's kind of like you're staying at the house of some famliy friends that you don't know very well: they're perfectly fine having you stay with them, but they're not going to out of their way to interact with you. For us, this was perfectly fine... it was fun to see Zack following Burr around, and he and Linda are definitely enjoying the life. But just don't go expecting to be entertained or have activities planned. It's just not that kind of place.

Room Tip: We had room 23, which (aside from the decorating) was very good: balcony had great views, and it was...

Beautiful view from a hillside over looking the ocean. We stayed in unit #5 which had a fairly private deck with two longers that over looked the pool and ocean. Very nice! We loved the included breakfast every morning. There were specials each day or you could order off the menu. There was coffee available all day long. The honor bar made happy hour convienient if you don't want to bother with going to the grocery store. The location is close to but not in Esperanza, which is perfect. Also, loved the beach chairs and supplies that were available on the honor system. Enjoy!

Room Tip: We like Room #5

I was really excited to be able to visit Vieques, but circumstances have dictated otherwise. Their offers and deals are great, and with the 2 or 3 people i had the chance to interact with, their customer service was top notch and always courteous even when i had to cancel my reservation.

My husband and I visited Vieques for the first time last week and we loved it. We stayed three nights in Hacienda Tamarindo and we enjoyed every minute of if. Amazing pool, magnificent views, great breakfast and the sweetest staff. We took the room that has its own private balcony, and I really enjoyed having extra privacy to read, take the sun and enjoy the view. Everything was perfectly clean and well equipped, no TV and no tub, but good internet connection if you need it. Staying in Tamarindo feels like staying at a friend's gorgeous property except with many more pleasant details, like the honor bar. Vieques is like an undiscovered, virgin paradise in the Caribbean. I really wished it stayed like that forever. Most of the time we were the only people in each of the beaches we drove to!. And Tamarindo was a great place to come back to after a full day of sun and sand. All the main roads are paved, but keep in mind that the roads are narrow; and before getting to some of the recently opened beaches the pavement ends so it gets bumpy... but it's worth the exploration and adventure. My all around favorite beach is Playa Roja (same as Playa Caracas). Also, if you want to get good local food and snacks among the locals go to "El Resuelve". I loved their "pastelillos". It's a small open restaurant on the side of one of the main roads on the East. And the Bioluminescent Bay tour at night is a must. We are already planning our next trip with our parents! Thank you Hacienda Tamarindo!

We just checked out this afternoon and are already thinking about when we'll be back.
Hacienda Tamarindo could not have been a better choice in where to stay.
This place, quite simply, is all you'll need to make your trip to Vieques complete.
Ivan, the manager, was extremely helpful and is a pleasure to talk to.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Vieques’ Hacienda Tamarindo offers 17 very special rooms, each lovingly and creatively designed and decorated by owner, Linda Vail -- her swan song after over 20 years as a commercial interior designer. Each guest room and public space is unique; imaginatively spiced with a lifetime’s accumulation of art, antiques, and collectibles. An ancient Tamarind tree in the lobby atrium majestically rises three stories through the center of the building. Terraces, courtyards, and sitting rooms offer ample space for relaxation and conversation. The Hacienda is perched on a hilltop with spectacular 180 degree views of the Caribbean -- from sunrise to sunset; looking down on the bedazzling, ever-changing myriad of blue, emerald and turquoise waters. Caribbean trade winds and lazy paddle fans keep you cool and comfortable. Here, you can fall asleep to a tree frog serenade and awake to the smell of jasmine on the gentle sea breeze. ... more   less
