it is quite the experience to go there to kayak. The road is bumpy -- go with a tour group. We were with a small group of about 10 -- which was very nice -- it made it more personal and we didn't need to wait on 25+ people. Wear clothing you are okay about getting wet -- including and particularly your shoes.

Once you survive the bumpy ride down the dirt road, get out past all of the other folks crowding to get in with the different tours...you will be sweetly rewarded. This was one of the coolest things I have ever seen in my life. I saw the Life of Pi recently and figured the scene depicting the whale jumping from the water glowing green in the night was a mere special effect (and surely it was for the film). But this was no special effect, it was real and it was amazing. When they give you a little time to explore on your own, we found the greatest concentration of fish in the middle of the lagoon. Why find the fish? Because they dart about lighting up the water as they scamper to get out of your way as you paddle by. I was completely in awe of the experience and wished I could have stayed a few more hours. We had NO problem with mosquitos. If you don't do this while you are in Puerto Rico or on the Island of Vieques, you are really missing out on one of natures most fascinating experiences. We used top rated Abe's and the guides were very nice and knowledgeable.

There are ~8 companies vying for your business. We chose Fun Brothers. In addition to regular paddling, Tom (a marine biologist) sought out schools of fish and egret roosts.

This was definitely worth the trip.
Our guide had a real passion for travel and protecting natural resources. Learning about the bio-bay was interesting to say the least.
It was disappointing that they no longer allow visitors to swim in the bio-bay, but very understandable as well.
Be sure to dress to get wet and leave you belongings at the hotel, otherwise you have to leave them with your van driver.
