“Simple & Distinct for Traveler's who don't take the common road.”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

The architecture is amazing. It has an outdoor feel like you are in nature with all the comforts. We stayed in Solaris 4 (2nd floor) the first night and then switched to Solaris 2 (top floor) the rest of the trip.

I loved waking up every morning feeling the breeze from outside and looking past my feet at the sunshine. It rained one of the nights (no we didn't get wet) it was just peaceful hearing the rain and feeling the breeze but being comfy and warm only a few feet away. Oh and the outdoor shower is amazing! Occasionally you can also hear the horses walking around.

The owner invited everyone to his home on the property to welcome us and serve some food and drinks. He said they get an interesting type of guest. I would agree. A lot of adventurous types who are also world travelers. Up for anything but also appreciates a fine meal.

YOGA.......I did yoga twice while I was there. The classes had about 10 ppl in them each time. The instructor was good. It was mostly vinyasa yoga for all levels. She let the class know what else they could do in the pose to bring it the next level or you could just take it easy at your own pace.

SOLARIS 4 vs 2: S4 gets some sun but enough shade that you never have to sit in the sun. S2 gets full sun. S4 has a back patio and S2 doesn't. S2 is on the top floor and has a better view of the island and water. I went in S1 to see the view. There's a tree in front of half the patio. The view was still good of the island and the water but I think S2 is better.

Both rooms had a good cross breeze. It kept most of nature out. I didn't get bit but my husband used the net over his side of the bed because he got bit by a few mosquito's. Wimp;)

IMO their website actually undersells what they offer. It leaves out some of the nice touches they have (fresh bread every day etc) and there aren't many pics of the rooms. Take a look at my pics for stuff they leave out and more pics of the rooms.

This place isn't for everyone. If you prefer traditional hotels, a high level of attention and service and do not like nature this place is not for you!

Room Tip: Get the top floor of Solaris. Solaris 2 has an unobstructed view of the island and water. Solaris...

My husband and I returned to Hix Island House after 14 years. We usually like to go to new places, but we enjoyed our trip in 2000 so much, we decided to go back. We're so glad we did! The island (Vieques) is still beautiful, and Hix Island House is still the place to stay. I would recommend the Casa Triangular Loft Studio.

All rooms are more like studio apartments than hotel rooms. And they're all open-air (no glass or screens in the HUGE windows). The bed has a firm mattress with a 2" topper and high-quality pillows. The room is arranged so that if it rains, there's no chance the bed would get wet. That is, unless there's a hurricane, in which case they have a large door that they can roll down and heavy wood shutters they can close. Do NOT go during hurricane season. We went late in February, and we only had rain at night or early in the morning.

When you're in your room at the Hix, it feels like your outdoors. There's no way to adequately describe how refreshing the air is at this place. After being cooped up indoors for four months in Ohio (think snow, ice and subzero temperatures), being outside for 9 days with temperatures between 72-85 was like being in paradise!

Don't be concerned about the fact that this place isn't right on the beach. The best beaches on the island are no where near any hotels. The Hix is on a hill, which means it gets lots of breezes and it offers beautiful views. Our favorite beach (Navio) is only about 20 minutes drive, but you do need a Jeep. The main roads on the island are narrow but paved, while the beach roads are not paved and very rough.

The best time to go is during the winter. We saw only a few mosquitos the whole time we were there. We used the mosquito netting the first couple of nights, but then we realized it wasn't necessary so we didn't bother with it. The temperatures are perfect in the winter months--no need for AC.

At the Hix, they'll give you a daily supply of fresh baked bread, fresh fruit, milk, eggs, butter, jams/honey, breakfast cereal, coffee, and juice. With a full sized refrigerator, two burners, a sink, pots & pans, utensils, and cutting boards, you can eat in if you don't feel like going out for every meal. We enjoyed packing a lunch to eat at the beach. Hix provides a cooler, beach chairs, and an umbrella.

If you decide to dine out, Esparanza has several really good restaurants on the waterfront. We liked El Quenepo, Bili, and Trade Winds. We found a deli in Isabel Segunda called Buen Provecho on Munoz street. Unlike many restaurants, they're open all afternoon (good find if you're looking for a late lunch), and they sell some grocery items.

We'll definitely return to Vieques, and we'll definitely stay at the Hix.

Room Tip: Rooms on upper floors have better views and more windows, as most buildings are built into hills. T...

Stunning place. We stayed in loft 5. To be honest it is the room with the best view on the property, the other houses have overgrown tree growth, which is still beautiful but you cannot see the ocean or overlook the island as well. Perfect pool! Nice staff, local people that are very helpful and have lots of ideas to make your stay fun. There was nothing better for us then to be able to look up at the stars while talking a hot shower outdoors. They give you plenty to make a nice breakfast, the housekeeping folks are sweet ladies. We did not have any problems with mosquitos in the room but keep the fans going and lights low. I would come back to this island for this place alone. Rent a jeep as you will need it on some of the beach roads, and if going to green beach(best snorkeling), watch out for some serious "ponds" of pot holes in the roads. You can easily drive through these but use caution as some are literally as deep as the hood of the car. Makes for a fun day exploring the island.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms in the rectangular house are best

My husband and I stayed at the His Island House just last week for our honeymoon. When we showed up (very early) they told us we had been upgraded! This seemed like a mixed blessing b/c I had poured over the rooms for days to pick the perfect one, but fate put is in the Casita. It was wonderful. I could have moved in. We spent a lot of time out on our private patio with an ocean view and watched the ponies grazing on the hillside. It was very easy to forget that we weren't the only people on the planet. The outdoor shower gets it's own 5 stars! The breakfast groceries were delicious.

My only complaint was that we were under the impression that they would be replenished daily (eggs, coffee, etc) and only the bread was replaced, so we ended up with not enough eggs and coffee. I don't know if this was my mistake or not, but it wasn't a big enough deal to take away a star.

This is not the place for you if you are squeamish about bugs or lizards in your house, cuz that definitely happened. It's also pretty expensive, and there are a lot of nice places for a lot less money. We also stayed at Casa de Amistad in Isabella II and were pretty happy there as well, though it was a completely different experience.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Casita - it was like a studio apartment with a big kitchen and huge bathroom and va...

We're glad you enjoyed your upgrade, and sorry for the confusion on the restocking of your kitchen. We do indeed restock all of the breakfast items daily, including coffee and eggs. I will discuss this with our housekeeping team so that this is not overlooked in the future. Thanks for sharing your stay with the TripAdvisor community and we look forward to seeing you soon back here at HIH.

We could not have asked for a better experience. From the moment we got there, stating that we had been upgraded, we loved it there. The people at the front from first checking in with Liz, we felt right at home. They were friendly and extremely helpful. Our upgraded room was the dream; had perfect views of the ocean, fully stocked kitchen, a great bathroom, and an outdoor shower with spectacular views of the surrounding areas and ocean. We made breakfast everyday and even used the bread to make sandwiches for our lunches at the beach. We loved every minute of our time there. Beaches are incredible and great for snorkeling. Some are remote and tough to get to, so make sure to have a jeep/suv that can handle it. Bioluminescent bay was not 100 (something had happened) but the kayak tour was still worth it, as you take a relaxing kayak tour in the bay with an amazing views of the starry sky. If you're looking for a fun/romantic/relaxing vacation, this is the place to go!

We decided to take a Valentines Day Vacation to Vieques. We heard about the bioluminescent bay and were really excited! I have never thought about staying in a place like Hix until my boyfriend convinced me and I read some really awesome reviews! We stayed in Redonda Loft 1. We originally booked the Triangular Matisse, but they upgraded us for free! It was beautiful, with an ocean view. We had a swing in our room. A large long table. An outdoor shower covered in vines. It really was something so magical and minimal at the same time. I did make us sleep with a net around our bed because I saw a HUGE spider (the size of a hand at least) on the ceiling...I couldn't help it! The lizards are friendly and mean well. There was a nice cool breeze, it never was humid or hot in our room. We only checked out the pool for a second and it was really nice! Hix gave us bread, jam, cereal, coffee, eggs, milk, juice every morning. We snacked on this throughout the day. They also have an "honor bar" in the lobby. You can take something and just write it down and they will charge your room. They also have a little game section next to the honor bar with board games, cards, etc.

The estate itself is beautiful. With hammocks in the fields and horses wondering around. The modern sculptures are cool to look at the in the tropical atmosphere. You can actually pick the berries off of the trees and eat them!

The staff was super friendly and helpful. Everyone was so relaxed!!

We traveled to all different beaches! Our favorite: Blue Beach, Secret Beach, Navijo, Media Luna..definitely rent an SUV/Jeep with 4 wheel drive because you are going to need it! Eat at "Sol Food" this amazing food truck also near the Caribbean side of the beaches. (empanadas were great!)

You must stay at Hix Island House if you are in Vieques!!!!

Room Tip: I would say choose a loft that is high up so you can catch a breeze. Our room high up in Loft 1 and...

Best hotel experience ever. Amazing to see a hotel built upon the Japanese design philosophy Wabi-Sabi. People who give this hotel anything less than 5 stars don't understand what Wabi-Sabi is and are un-fairly comparing it to say a W Hotel experience. John Hix created this living breathing poem of a hotel that is getting more beautiful as it ages.

It's a super romantic place too! The open air design was very breezy and never got too hot. Loved our Redonda Loft 3 room - cool layout. Felt like camping but safe and cozy under the bed bug net.

Also has a beautiful yoga space with a lovely instructor Jennifer who has taught there for 13+ years. They teach classes daily at 9:30am.

Highly recommend this place for any design lover.

Room Tip: Get a top floor room so it's extra breezy.
