W Retreat & Spa - Vieques Island
Ranked #2 of 5 Hotels in Isla de Vieques
Certificate of Excellence

This renovated place ,not far from the ferry in Vieques, is the top place in Puerto Rico.
It is medium size ,has 2 nice beaches, good restaurants, friendly service and good management.
The rooms are really renovated ,not a cheap paint job,the bathrooms are spacious and clean and only one night we had some handy man working nearby.
We were however compensated for this disturbances.
The buffet breakfast is very good and the restaurant is not cheap ,but worth it's price.
We enjoyed every day in this hotel and so should you.
A great place to relax .
Do not forget the Mosquito Bay with it's luminous algeas ,this is a top place to be in the warm water and see your whole body in a magical light.b

Everything you would expect and more from a W Resort from the moment you arrive at the airport lounge with a full complimentary bar with snacks while you wait for the staff to come and get you in the free shuttle to the resort.

If you want to vacation on an island that doesn't feel like its been trampled on by a million tourists but still stay at a luxury resort then the W Vieques is the place to go. The staff is there when you need them but not constantly bugging you when you don't. The pool area is by far the best its so relaxing you won't believe it. They always have a great mix of house music playing poolside as well as in the pool itself. I've already booked the same week for next December and can't wait to get back.

We stayed at the W Retreat from December 29, 2010 thru January 8, 2011; it was very relaxing and fun. The W has a lounge at the airport to provide you with drinks and refreshments before transportating you to their property. The beauifully designed and expansive property fronts the Atlantic Ocean with two large lap pools along with smaller jetted pools on the property. Our full ocean view room was large and artsy decorated with a great patio. We loved the comfortable king bed, the large separate tub and shower. The entire staff at the facility (lobby, restaurant, cafe, living room (expansive lobby area), bar and pools were excellent. Access to the beach was steps away from the pool and our room. The dining room had great food, but the menu was limited. However, the property also had a cafe to purchase sandwiches and other snacks from morning to 5:00pm. We loved the expansive seating on the inside and patios (beach and pool views) with full service provided for food and drinks. We loved the pit fireplace that felt wonderful with the night tradewinds. We used the exercise facility that had great equipment and we also loved the yoga classes that were provided twice daily.

We stayed at the W during the week of Jan 2nd. Our oceanview ground floor room was very comfortable, we did not encounter any problems with hot water or A/C. We did however, have issues with hotel staff. We were unable to rent a car in advance and upon our arrival inquired again about renting a car or scooter and we were told by hotel staff it would be impossible to do so because the island ran out of gas. On our last full day we gave up and decided to rent bicycles from the hotel (for an additional $70) in order to get ourselves to one of the off-site beaches by any means necessary. We went to the front desk to check on our route we noticed a small sign advertising a hotel shuttle to the beach ($12 per person) that had left an hour before, this was after we were informed the day before that hotel "only provides shuttles to the airport." The next day we recieved a message from a staff member proudly announcing they had found a scooter we could rent for the entire day, on the morning of our check out. Insult to injury.

Another issue we had was being interrupted on more than one occasion by staff members coming to our room mistakenly. Once a staff member banged loudly on our glass door announcing he was there to check on a complaint about the hot water (we had no such issue) and the next morning another banged on our door frightening us VERY early in the morning to collect our luggage, except we weren't leaving for another day. We called the front desk to complain and received a most unsatisfactory response and barely apology.

As for Mix the restaurant, do yourself and favor and don't go. Or alternatively, have your spouse/companion punch you in the stomach and then hand them $200. Totally agree that Alain Ducasse should remove his association or think about intervening immediately.

Bottom line: Staff are mostly pleasant and nice just not very helpful. Small issues are far more tolerable when you aren't charged a small fortune for every last thing whether or not you use it($65 per day for tennis/parking??) For the outrageous prices here people expect and deserve to be treated better. We might return to Vieques someday but it probably won't be to the W, unless they make some major changes.

We had planned to rent a house on Vieques but our friends had to pull out so we traded in Points to stay at the W. If we had been paying the rack rate of $1,700 per night (!), my review may have been different.

Our room was huge, with a lovely large deck. We were further back on the property, but had a great view of the beautifully landscaped grounds. The room was a little funny though; the living room had a lot of unusable space, seemed to have redesigned an earlier kitchenette. There was a large unusable entry way with no lights. They also were short on roll-aways, though they had tons of advance warning, it seems that they could have brought in some more, because they told us months in advance that there may be a problem with one for our 9yo. But we had a large lounger and they were very nice about bringing in bedding for it. We borrowed movies from the front desk twice and it was a nice bonus.

Hooks - hello? There was one hook (inconveniently behind the bed-sized tub), and not a single hook or soap dish in our guest bathroom. We had to drape towels on the bathtub, or clump them on the back of the toilet. Maybe rich people have towel-boys to hold their towels for them?

The pool area and Living Room were gorgeous, with huge sliding walls that opened onto the grounds, more seating, and the firepit; it was just wonderful. Although there was a shortage of pool chairs (the staff nicely raided even their own to try to supplement), and CRAZY people were getting into fights over them, and saving them starting early in the morning to use for one hour in the afternoon. There probably could have been more shade umbrellas. There was a beautiful smaller pool near our villa that was stunning at night.

For all the fuss about the food and the chef, it wasn't that good. I had some scrambled eggs one morning that I really think used shelf-stabilized eggs, they had that taste of college cafeteria. We did love the Cubano sandwiches in the Living Room though. We went to two local restaurants that were great, and a fraction of the price, and there were a few other highly-rated ones we didn't make it to.

You should ABSOLUTELY call as soon as you book in order to rent a car. There are some gorgeous beaches on the island, but the cabs won't go there because they're down dirt roads. So the beaches they will take you to are nice, but no where near the caliber of Blue beach, or Red beach. (we didn't have a car, and were very sad to miss some of the others). The hotel beaches are fine, but nothing special, and on the Atlantic (rather than Caribbean) side, so rougher and without the white sand). You MUST do the bio bay tour, and swim in it.

There was a torrential downpour on our second day, and this was the real opening of the peak season for the hotel. The staff reacted fantastically, they devised games, found additional seating for the Living Room, and worked very long hours amusing everyone who were trapped inside. One annoying thing though was that when we arrived, they were advertising two video game rooms for the kids, and a movie room. This never materialized, and they didn't really have any explanation.

Overall the rooms were lovely, the grounds beautiful, the staff incredible, the value marginal, the island very nice. As noted, there are lots of add-on fees - this isn't a cheap hotel. There were also a lot of privileged teenagers (this was xmas break) with a lot of attitude tormenting the staff.

Off-topic slightly, make sure to give yourself extra layover time if you have to catch a flight home. Cape Air was laid back and running over an hour late, and we missed our weekly charter. It took us 3 days to get a different flight out of San Juan, and cost us $1,500. We're still waiting to hear from Cape Air if they'll do anything for us.

We just came back from our vacation there and I will say right away - we WILL go back to Vieques but we will NOT stay in W...at least something changes there and that would be the price. I always read reviews at tripadvisor before I book my hotels and I found they were always helpful. That is why I started writing myself trying to help others, I guess. If you read the reviews that give 3 stars or less to this resort, you will find the same, absolutely the same comments, i.e. TOO expensive for what you get!!!!That includes the rooms and over over priced food. The food in the W cafe is expensive and really SO-SO. I completely agree with one of the comments that the chef should take his name off there, too embarassing. We didnt rent a car at the beginning but after the 1st day, we realized, it is a MUST. Not only for the prices, that I already said enough but also for the beaches. We stayed Dec 28-Jan 5 and the sea was to rough to swim, nobody swam, but on the south side was REAL paradise. It was like the advertising from Bounty chocolate bar! The sand was white and the sea cristal clear and calm. The stuff is trying though, I must admit. I would name Jorge who was very helpful for our family (we have 13 y.o. and a baby of 19 months) and the general manager was very nice (sorry, dont remember the name). There is a tall dark woman there who is NOT nice at all! Felt like she was trying to make you pay even more for few things, she was not friendly at all. Somebody from W is hopefully reading some of the reviews and will do something about prices. It is simply not worth what they charge for. And I travel a lot and stayed in tons of places to be able to compare it with. Vieuqes is SUPERB though to the point where my husband started looking for property!!!

This place was awesome. Its a smaller hotel that fits well into its surroundings on the beach. While modern/stylish its not obnoxiously cheesy like some Ws can tend to be. The pools and beach were great, but i'd definitely recommend renting a car to explore the beaches and restaurants on the south side of the island. The bio bay was one of the coolest things i've ever seen (do the kayak tour). Looks much nicer than the photos on the website too.
