Being all around the world and always relying on the W brand to deliver, this hotel was ok but off the target.
PROPERTY: Located on the Atlantic side of Vieques, the beaches are "rough" as described from one of its members, and indeed its true, the best beaches to explore and on the Caribbean side of the island.
There were plus and minuses on the properties, but the thing the stood the most was the poor upkeep in certain areas, for example: the beach, dirty piled up towels, dirty sand on the stairs deck, plastic plates overloading garbage cans, left over food left on the beach (overlooked by maintenance staff)
The rooms were a bit muggy, the showers smelled, sign that they werent thoughroughly clean, ocean views are great and the sound of the waves is truly relaxing. The main lobby can use some "white tea" scent (Westin brand of Starwood) or the classic W scent found in most hotels, when we walked in it smelled like a college locke room.
FRONT END STAFF: The valet guys were great, always smiling and attentive to customer needs, the front desk was good too, they accommodate us any way possible. "WHATEVER WHENEVER" was on the fair side and could use some training. Whenever I sit down with my wife to explore tours or have questions, I would appreciate a bit (just a bit) of undivided attention without cell phone interruptions from family while we just sit there waiting for the girl to hang up. Again, we expected more from a W brand.
RESTAURANTS (the good, the bad, the ugly): Our best experience was at SOURCE, Joel, our waiter was extremely kind and went out of his way to make our anniversary special, the managers were great also, the food was on the average side. Overall, dinner was a good experience thanks to the good energy of the atmosphere.
The breakfast place simply a small store that should be outsourced, this is NOWHERE near W comparable. The prices were though. But its simply an overpriced tiny starbucks wannabe.
Our worst experience was at LIVING ROOM: We've dealt in a period of 4 days with pretty much all the staff members and they ALL had a chip in their shoulder, really? at the W? what a disapointment, no smiles, taking orders like they were doing us a favor. I always tell my wife that I rather sacrifice food quality over superb service. At this level we shoudn't do either. From the bar for a quick drink, to several lunches and dinners, Living room needs a LOT of work by the managers (which we've never saw on site). Those girls simply need an attitude adjustment, its a reflection of how the place is run. Ever show up at an empty register at the supermarket and there's a cashier sitting doing nothing and they give you that look?? That's exactly how we felt and considering restaurant choices are limited in the island, its all we've had. This I never expected from a W brand.
Overall it was a good trip, but I felt the W would play its part for customers to have the itch to come back really soon. I'm not feeling it yet.
