At the Waves
Reviewed July 10, 2012

My husband and I stayed here the week of Fourth of July, and this was exactly the type of place we needed to unwind from our busy jobs. At the Waves is nestled in a quiet neighborhood. The grounds were well-manicured, and our room was extremely clean with modern furniture. To those who clean the rooms and maintain the grounds - kudos to you! The kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals. Look at what is in your unit before you go shopping - we had plenty of paper towels, foil, and even cooking spray. There is also a grill by the pool for guests to use. Our room had a useful reference book with information on everything we could possibly want to do in Vieques, with phone numbers and maps. Rent a car if you stay here. As others have mentioned, At the Waves provides all you need to visit the beaches - cooler, beach chairs, beach towels, etc. I highly recommend driving about 15 minutes to Pata Prieta (aka Secret Beach) for a secluded soft-sand beach great for swimming and snorkeling. The beach directly in front of the property is nice for hiking, but you need to walk a little while to reach a less rocky place for swimming.

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at At the Waves and it was a great place to stay on the island. We stayed in the 1 bedroom/1 bathroom and it was very clean and had everything we needed. The property as a whole was very clean as well. We really enjoyed our evening walks on the beach in front of the house where we rarely saw any other people. Ian was very helpful with the information he provided. It was a great value and we would definitely recommend staying here if you are going to Vieques and we look forward to going back at some point.

Words can not describe the beauty of At the Waves. If you are looking for a private, secluded, clean, welcoming vacation destination, this is the place! We were helped with everything we needed and always with a helping hand smile. Everything was provided for beach excursions. The place was so clean. The owner helped in every way possible to make our travel arrangements, including the car rental. The owner of the car rental met us at the airport in Vieques and took us back there at the end of our stay. The island is unbelievably spectacular. The locals are pleasant and helpful. If you have any doubt whatsoever about staying here, don't. You will not regret it!

At the Waves is located on the North (Atlantic) coast of the Isla Vieques, a few minutes drive from ferry and downtown Isabel Segunda. It is tucked away in a residential neighborhood. The property is located on the beachfront, very nicely landscaped, has a nice, clean swimming pool outside and a wonderful view of the ocean.
Ian, the owner, is a great host. He was quick, responsive, and helpful with our booking and all questions about the island. We rented the 3x bedroom unit on the second floor. It was spacious for six people, clean, and comfortable with a great balcony.

The ocean breeze was very refreshing and there was no need for AC in the bedrooms at night. The beds were comfortable. Each night we felt asleep to the sounds of the waves and Coqui frogs. The kitchen had everything that we needed. There were even blender for mixing pina colada, coffee, and condiments in the fridge left from previous vacationers. A washer and dryer on site (no extra charge), free WiFi, and TV were also available. Beach chairs, towels and cooler were a nice addition.

Best of all, this property really is on the beach. The wind and waves are bigger than on the Caribbean side, but beach is still very pleasant for sunning, shelling, and strolling. The villa is conveniently located, Esperanza is within 20 minutes and all of the spectacular beaches are within a 20-30 minute drive. Our favorite snorkeling places were Secret and Green beach, very interesting Black beach and a small trail to it. The Bio bay and mangrove tour with Jeffrey from Abe’s are not to be missed.
We highly recommend At the Waves for a relaxing, comfortable, and carefree stay on Vieques.

My husband and I just got back from our 10th anniversary vacation in Vieques and stayed at, At the Waves. Ian was not there as he was in the states, but he answered all of our questions that we had before we arrived. Nancy, his manager is phenomonal, she helped us with suggestions on where to go to eat etc. She was awesome and very personable.

This is right on the beach, we were there in March, which is their winter, so the waves were quite large most of the time, not too good for snorkeling, but a beautiful stretch of land/beachfront to walk on. We walked for miles (to the right) only one tricky spot to get over and that is within eye distance of the villa, after that it's clear sailing and some awesome sea glass. I walked every morning and met up with the same people walking their dogs, very friendly area. Also 3 days while I was walking a horse came down and rolled around in the sand and then left, the same one, that was neat to see.

It is immaculate in it's maintenance and furnishings, very well kept up yard/pool etc. I would definitly stay here again, we had the 1 bedroom unit which was great for us. We did hear the dogs at the Humane Society a few nights, but then we turned the a/c on in the bedroom and that blocked it out completely.

Before booking our vacation we debated between this and Hector's by the Sea, and we are so glad that we chose, At the Waves, we saw Hector's on our walk on the beach one morning and they have quite a cliff to traverse to get to the beach.

Mia and Buddy, resident dogs are awesome. Mia loves to walk around with leaves in her mouth.

If you want a comfortable, clean, inviting place to stay, give Ian a call and he will make it happen for you.

We stayed at At the Waves last year. It was amazing. Beautiful beach front units, very clean, use of the laundry facilities-I went home with clean clothes, a big plus. The 2 bedroom units were spacious, I was spoiled. The owner, Ian was extremely informative and answered my questions.prior to our visiting . He was always available and willing to patiently answer my lists of questions at the start of each day from where the best snorkeling was on the island to the best reasonable restaurants to go to. We would definately go back to At the Waves. The best part for my kids...bio bay, snorkeling....no.... playing with the dogs and swimming in the pool. Figures.

The apartment was very clean and comfortable and provided all the necessities we needed. It's a great place to stay with kids or if you come with a group of friends as the pool and BBQ encourage hanging out. However, we were a couple looking for a romantic, secluded place and this wasn't exactly that. Lots of crying babies every morning but that could have been anywhere and is no fault of At the Waves.
There are tons of jalousie windows, giving the place a nice airiness but at night that quickly becomes a fish bowl with no privacy. We closed the windows at night which made it a little stuffy but not too bad. Just fans and no AC and we were fine. If you're not bothered by people seeing in then no need to worry.
The ocean is steps away and lovely for a morning or evening stroll but make no mistake, this isn't a swimming beach... unless you're adventurous. Very rough and rocky.
