Owner description: Balneario Monserrate, often referred to simply as Luquillo Beach, is a long cresent of fine sand, with plenty of mature palm trees for shade, and El Yunque National Forest in the background. Due to a fringing reef, there are no waves to speak of, so it's a perfect beach for young kids. The beach has some food kiosks, restrooms, changing rooms, showers, and lifeguards. There is a small fee to park in the gated parking area.

This is by far, the most "perfect" beach we've ever visited. We are here in Puerto Rico for our third year, and THIS is the beach we come to over and over again. It is also known as La Monserrate or Luquillo Beach. It's waves are calmer which makes it ideal for swimming and the sand is fine-grained and a bit harder-packed to make it an excellent running beach. It is a very long beach, so you always have your privacy. We're here in January and February, though, so this is not high season for the Puerto Ricans and it is indeed way more crowded in the summer months. There are concession stands and a tee shirt shop and even kayak rental. Perfect for relaxing, reading, sunning and just appreciating the splender in front of you.

I was confused at the differences in the reviews of this beach. Some love it and others go thumbs down. I discovered what I believe is the issue.

About 1000 yards west of the entrance to the beach is a row of about 60 food kiosks. Great places to stop for food. Some, however, don't clean up the trash in the beach area behind them (which is NOT Luquillo Beach) and it can get filthy. Many go to area - park by the Kioskos and mistake it for Luquillo Beach. They see the dumpy beach area and leave.

The actual entrance to the Luquillo Beach (aka Balneario Monserrate), is east of the Kiosks through a large gate into a guarded parking area (~$5 to park). The beach is part of a clean and beautiful, palm tree lined beach with calm waters and guarded swimming areas. There are changing rooms, chair rentals, and a clean and really good snack food place and bar that serves great pina colatas. It has been run by the same family for 30 years and passed my mother in laws kitchen inspection.

I think many of the negative reviewers have confused the area behind the kiosks with the park, which was recently privatized. The actual park, is well maintained and a beautiful place.

Luquillo Beach is located in the Rio Grande area. It has lots of clear spaces to swim and sun bathe, because it's a more private beach, is never too crowded at one time. There are horse riding guards ensuring safety of tourists, and water is not deep at all, it's very gentle and easy, including for children to swim and play. There are lots of trees and the grounds are very clean and well kept. Be prepared to pay $1 for bathroom usage, I guess I don't mind paying it knowing it helps keep grounds nice as they are. You can bring anything to the beach to eat and drink as long as it is not alcohol or in a glass container. It is a very relaxing beach as opposed to the others that are nice but have little comfort or organization. I appreciated this beach very much.

You pay $4.37 to park, and it is worth every dime. The beach is beautiful, and the water is lovely. There are lots of food stands a short walk down - it seemed that a lot of the stands sold the same thing, but it's obvious folks have their faves. Well worth the visit.

Luquillo beach is like being at the Jersey shore. The surf is a bit rough but enjoyable. Being in Luquillo is expierencing the real Puerto Rico you have to remember Puerto Rico is not just San Juan.
