“Great viewpoint for the city”
Reviewed April 13, 2014

This mansion is high on a hill overlooking Ponce, and has great views for miles. There are wonderful gardens and colorful flowers outside, and fully-furnished rooms with original furniture inside. It was owned by the family that made a fortune in the rum production, so it had the best of the best for the time period. We had a guided tour that was definitely interesting.

“A different view of life in PR”
Reviewed March 27, 2014

Having lived in Ponce in the mid 60's when I was in college, I was intrigued to see this totally different side of life in Ponce. The castillo reminded us of the Hearst Castle on the CA coast but on a much smaller scale. And knowing that the family was still actually living there when I was a student was fascinating. The views from the hilltop were fantastic and the Japanese garden was so peaceful and serene.

“Beautiful home, well maintained, amazing views”
Reviewed February 6, 2014

This is a beautiful home and and the tour was quick and informative. Views from patio is amazing and it is located right next to the Vigia Cross. Views from the Cross are nice and provide a great angle for photographing the home. The Japanese garden is disappointing.

“Rum castle”
Reviewed January 18, 2014

I liked this place, because it is so picturesque. It is a relatively new house (built in early 20th century), but reflects some of Puerto Rican history and somehow gives the insight into Puerto Rican life (not only the life of the richest, but also sugar cane plantation). The location, high above Ponce, is spectacular. The gardens are beautiful. The house itself - interesting. Worth visiting while near Ponce.

“Historic & enchanting”
Reviewed January 12, 2014

A must when visiting Ponce! This castle was the residency of the founders and makers of DonQ (and Captain Morgan until 2010) Rum. It was built and 1930's and maintained in excellent condition to this day. Tours are offered in Spanish and English and there are different packages with their own good pricing depending on what you want to see. At the beginning of the tour they'll show you a 10-15 min movie about the history of the castle, the family who owned it as well as how their rum-making business started. Then they take you through some areas of the house. What is awesome about it is that there are a lot of original pieces in the castle, like the whole dining room table, chairs and silverware, and everything is kept in great shape considering they're from the 1900s. They have a Butterfly Nursery (built in 2010) and you can go see their gardens which are beautiful. At the end of the tour you can go to their cafe and try some of their rums for free. I tasted with my boyfriend the new Black Beard spiced rum! which is soon to be released.
