It is true that Hotel Malia is full of old world charm and very quaint. Its location in the historic market square leaves you at the center or darn close to many interesting things to do and restaurants to enjoy. The staff is very helpful and pleasant, trying to please the guests with their excellent English and knowledge of the local area.

The hotel is very clean as are the rooms, and especially important to me are the bathrooms which were sparkling clean and white. The elevator is original and does a quick 'hop' upon stopping -not dangerous but just a reminder this place is 118 years young!

Also true are the roof top lounge parties that go on, and on, and on. Yes, I get hotels book parties, what hotel doesn't rely on such revenue? But the music went on until past 3:30am. Both of our rooms (2 couples traveling) shook with the very loud decibel level and the boom of the bass reverberating so that the vibes could be physically felt making sleep completely impossible. What could they have done to help the non-partying guests? I think they could put a reasonable end time, say 2am, on all such parties. I think they could also put a maximum decibel level on the music. And, I wish they could have warned us when reservations were made that it was a party weekend, both Friday and Saturday nights.

Sorry to be a party-pooper but I'll find some place a bit more quiet next time.

The oldest hotel in Ponce it's right on the square across from the fire house museum. It's a great place to stay. You feel like you're in a 1950's 60's episode of the "I Love Lucy Show" goes to Puerto Rico. It's a very nice clean, affordable grand hotel with a great coffee bar / breakfast place with a very nice swimming pool. The rooms are older but very nice with big ol'wooden doors that they just don't make anymore. The front desk people that work there are very nice!

Room Tip: I stayed 2/13 second floor just off the elevator to the right. king sized bed very nice.

Ended up booking the Melia when the Hilton that was recommended was sold out. Location is right by the main tourist square with the red Firehouse. The hotel entry is nice and open, and certainly made me feel I made a good choice. Elevator is very old, and memorable due to the sudden starts/stops that you learn to brace for. Nothing scary, just quaint really. My room was extremely small, but the AC worked fine and I didn't spend much time in the room anyway. A business associate spent $20 for a room upgrade, and got a much better view + a balcony, so I recommend the upgrade. No bugs, adequately clean, nice staff. A good choice in the heart of Ponce, with its own parking lot next to the hotel. Note that if you get outside of the main square area at night, you will get approached by panhandlers. Fine for a couple guys, but might be a bit disconcerting if you aren't used to it.

Staying at Hotel Melia just made our short trip even better! I was a member of a dragon boat team participating in the 2nd annual Puerto Rico races. In fact, the majority of guests were paddlers from all over the U.S. and Canada.
Pros:
1. My compliments to the accommodating and outstanding staff. Check-in and check-outs were efficient and friendly. We had members arriving at midnight and there was always someone to help us. Most restaurants close at 10:30 pm but we were directed to a 24 hour Burger King (a 10 min. walk from the hotel) to catch a bite. The staff has great restaurant recommendations. Lola's in the Ramada Inn on the square is gem.
2. There is a parking lot at the hotel (go through the breakfast area) @ $6/day. If the lot is full, the attendant will ask you for your car key - no problem.
3. The rooms facing the street had windows looking out but beware if you are a light sleeper - loud music and street noises. My husband snores so the street noise was not a problem. The interior rooms looked into the atrium area so no natural sunlight, but quieter. First floor rooms newly remodeled.
4. There is an Always 99 store a couple of blocks from the hotel for those forgotten items.
5. Print out the directions from the hotel from San Juan to Ponce and use your smart phone as your navigational tool. Best store for souvenirs: at the corner facing the square from the hotel.
6. Worth a visit: the art museum.
7. Complimentary breakfast (I don't know if this was set up especially for the paddlers or not, but please ask) included fruit, cereal, juice, bacon/ham, etc., the menu was a little different each day.
Cons:
1. Didn't find out about Gilligan's Island near Ponce. Looks like it was worth a visit from the comments I got.
2. Not enough time to enjoy more of this area of Puerto Rico.

Room Tip: Relax, you're on vacation.

The new management is sure making an impact on this Hotel. From their new Outdoor activities on the roof to their coffee shop. Besides the town is right in front of all activities within Ponce. I sue recommend it.
