About the only thing going for this hotel is the location. The once luxurious lobby is full of dirty old furniture and ratty carpets.the rooms were basic but outdated, and there were dead bugs inside the drawers. The brand new pool and garden cafe were in sharp contrast to the rest of the hotel, but didn't deliver. Its a crying shame that a cafe/rest in Puerto Rico only offers WHITE BREAD as breakfast choice. Servers were lackadaisical and slow, coffee was watery and weak. The free wifi never worked. I 've stayed at this property several times before but this is the last time, it just keeps going downhill

Bad customer service. When we got to our room the bathroom lights weren't working. We went downstairs to tell the front desk clerk our problem. He was an older gentleman who works the late afternoon - night shift. He phoned someone to go to our room and fix the lights. We sat about 8 feet away from the front desk, in clear sight of the clerk for 45 minutes. Not once did he check on us, or inquire to see if our room was fixed. We were ignored the whole time. When we approached him to find out about our room, he told us it was ready to go, and that he didn't tell us because he thought we were going to walk around Ponce. This was a weak excuse because we were sitting in front of him the whole time waiting patiently. When we pointed this out to him, he gave us an attitude and snapped back at us. This was unacceptable. Not once did he apologize for the inconvenience or for giving us an attitude. He then called someone to see if our lights were fixed, when he already said they were. The elevator was broken, so we had to carry all of our luggage to the 3rd floor. You'd think the staff would offer to help, but they didn't. 3 staff members in the lobby just stood around. During our whole stay at El Melia, whenever we entered the hotel, this same front desk clerk would look down and not greet us, but he would greet everyone else. This was unprofessional and made us feel very unwelcome here. The bathroom door vents were dirty and dusty and a dirty sock was left in a drawer.

We stayed at the Hotel Meliá from Thursday to Sunday. Everything went really well, the lady doing housekeeping was extremely nice and welcoming; so too was the front desk staff. On our last night the rooftop lounge was having an after party for a weekend activity that was taking place in the in the city of Ponce. At 12:30 AM the music was so loud we couldn't sleep and the noise outside our room was extremely annoying (the people coming and going from the party had to use the stairs and the elevator located right next to the rooms). We called the front desk and they told us that the party was supposed to lower the music after 11:30. We finally couldn't stand it anymore and we went to the front desk where we discovered that one of the hotel owners was actually at the party (I mean really? The owner is there and is doing nothing to stop or at least lower the music). The guy at the front desk gave us a room away from the elevator/stairs so we had to move all of our things at 1 AM. The room was nicer than the previous one but had a horrible musty smell (part of the carpet was wet and AC was turned off). It was difficult to stand the smell but we were so sleepy that we tried to ignore it. Overall it was a nice stay until the last night. I believe that they shouldn't have charged us that night. If you have a party, please be mindful of the other guests paying for a room that are not part of said party. All we wanted was to enjoy what we were paying for.

This beautiful, historic hotel is very conveniently located to view all the old buildings of Ponce, and right across the street from the park, church and trolley tour, which we recommend. So far, Ponce has been the best place in Puerto Rico to see amazing architecture, outside of Old San Juan, of course. Our room had a good view of the mountains. We felt totally safe strolling around the park in the evening.
The staff was very friendly and helpful with directions.
The continental breakfast was almost non-existent, however, they gave a 50% discount on the Bistro next door and the food there was delicious.

Room Tip: In the off season, ask for a discount.

I recently stayed at the Melia during my visit to Puerto Rico and I gave it a 4 but think it is more accurately a 3 1/2 with potential for a 5. The location is central to many shops, tourist attractions and other amenities. It is a lovely and historic hotel but could certainly use some updating in some areas - particularly the bathrooms in the rooms. I stayed in a king deluxe room which was a nice size with a balcony overlooking the Plaza de las Delicias. We had a wonderful view of the Parque de Bombas and square. It can get a little loud late at night when folks are out at night but we were so exhausted each night and just passed out. If you are sensitive to noise, request a room that overlook the inner courtyard. The hotel architecture and details are beautiful and the pool courtyard is really cute. The breakfast could use some updating. While you get toast, bagels, cereals, juice, milks and coffee - I want something different from a hotel on a tropical island. Having stayed at small hotels in other Caribbean islands, I would have loved some fresh local fruit and pastries. We found nearby local panaderias to eat traditional breakfasts. I do love that Melia offers some small dishes, charcuterie and cheese plates, and wine. We were in Puerto Rico for our wedding anniversary and were able to have a cold bottle of wine waiting for us after a day of snorkeling. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. If you like big and fancy hotels, Melia is not for you. But if you prefer historic, quaint, simple with some elegance...you will enjoy it.

The Hotel Melia has been serving guests for 118 years. My GPS Madge couldn't locate the hotel among the streets and we drove around for about 15 minutes, but with the assistance of an excellent English speaking desk manager we found the place. It was worth the effort. If you enjoy a classic Spanish hotel environment, Melia Hotel is for you. This hotel like others, even those substantially younger than its 118 years, suffers from AC units that are window mounted and designed to cool at maximum heat. When humidity is high and heat is moderate, the room turns into either cool and damp or warm and muggy. We stayed on the 4th floor. Great view looking over an inner courtyard right out the room door. I'd like to stay here again but in a different room. Great desk staff.

Room Tip: Pick a room on an upper floor looking over the inner courtyard. Or maybe one facing the street. Giv...
