We just returned from our trip to the Hyatt Hacienda where we rented a two-bedroom condominium. Hyatt has the lion's share of the beach property at Dorado with its three facilities which are available to all resort guests. The grounds are impeccable and the golf courses are fantastic. We want to especially complement the professionalism and skill of the front desk , spa and beach staff . They were extremely polite and helpful, and they will go out of their way to please guests. In every way, they exhibited the high standard for which Hyatt is well known. It is readily obvious that this resort was once the Grand Dame of the island.

That being said, we must acknowledge that the resort has fallen on hard times from what appears to be poor property management and intentional neglect from the Hyatt corporate structure. Presently the abandoned, mammoth Dorado Beach Hotel is an eyesore to say the least, and it, along with its rusting roof, is in plain view of the oceanfront condominiums. I was advised by the resort staff that Hyatt intends to begin renovation work on the hotel later this year and intends to complete the project by the end of next year. Get real, Hyatt, this massive undertaking will take at least three years, since the hotel is only one of the many structural problems on the resort.

Other buildings, which are not few in number, are also rusting and in need of serious renovation. Even the condos need upgrading with regard to rusting and peeling paint from the walls, fading draperies, peeling paint from porch furniture, an infestation of miniature ants on the balcony upon our arrival, and dirty showerheads to say the least. The miniature ants were also around the pool property.

While many of the restaurants are now closed at the resort, the Zen Restaurant is still open for business. We found the food there to lack presentation as well as good taste for such a pricey establishment. We were grateful that we had rented a vehicle, so we could travel to other upscale restaurants.

One other point which we noted and hope was not intentional was that the maid service was inconsistent in how they cleaned our rooms, in that they decreased the service the last two nights of our stay--tacky, tacky, Hyatt!

Hopefully in time Hyatt will be able to restore the rare beauty that the resort was known for in years past. If so, we may very well return to Dorado Beach.

We went in the off season - in August 2004, and we originally had a Golf View room. They upgraded us when we arrived to an Ocean View room, and it was gorgeous. The units had two levels, so only two groups could occupy any unit. Even still, it was like you had your own private beach (although you can't really swim there - it's too rocky). There were nice hammocks outside the unit, though, so lying by the water and watching the sun go down was a beautiful sight.

The pools were all really pretty and open even at night (although there was no lifeguard, so it was at your own risk). The pool house also provides free bike rentals so you can choose to ride around the complex and the next complex where there is a great tide pool.

As a tip, you should know that the restaurants are overpriced and serve bad quality food. Try venturing out of the resort and get some Puerto Rican flavor. The seafood is fresh and the mofongo was great.

Another tip: If you choose to rent a car (and I would recommend it), go to Vias and not the overpriced American car rental companies like Hertz or Avis. Vias will pick you up from the hotel to drive you to the nearby office. The car rental was MUCH cheaper than the other companies.

Even though it's quite far from the airport, it's worth it. My children were so amazed from the grounds. Imagine, a long winding river pool that slowly brings you winding down to the next sister hotel. The relaxing beaches and a total of 3+ pools. The beach was good, the water was clean and blue. On Wednesday nights, you should bring your childrens to the day camp area to watch movies for free. Also, mini golf, tennis, bicycles are available for use in the hotel. We had fun with mini golf, we used to 2 times. Use the shuttle buses to the sister resorts, which operate every 30 minutes. Overall, we had an amazing experience. We went to the Rainforest, be sure to wear comfortable clothing. The Barcardi Rum factory was quite amusing. Free samples (rum) and soda for the children. I miss Puerto Rico, and I would totally reccommend this hotel 100%.

We just returned from our two day get away at this hotel and all I can say is that they should close it down ultil they start and finish a complete rennovation. . We as locals knew very well this Cerromar Hotel before its closing and it is painful to see how deteriorated everything is. They should not continue the timesharing program because is very dissapointing to the members not to get what there were oferred. NO restaurant, no casino, no pool bar (except hours a day) no nothing. As for the beach and pools, we have so much better offers and hotels here in P.R. that is offensive to promote this kind of place as a Hyatt, please!!!!!. We reserved this place to be with family from the states that had a timeshare and never imagined the place to be so rundown. To top it all the sister hotel Dorado Beach, who has the nicest beach ,closed down this same week. As I read the reviews of other people today I realized everybody thinks the same way. I advise to look for better offers. Definitely not a place to consider for your vacation!!!
