“Christmas Break Embassy Suites Dorado del Mar”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

Our first trip to PR, we chose the Embassy Suites in Dorado because we needed the extra space and it had all the amenities we were looking for--most importantly a beachfront location. The hotel is about a half mile to a mile walk (through the property) to Dorado itself, a small community a half hour from San Juan. There are number of restaurants in town a short cab ride away, but most of the major attractions are long car ride away. That was OK, you just have know that going into it. We have stayed at Embassy Suites before, and knew we could count on a decent hotel. The room was nicer than we expected and the pool area was pretty good too. The beach has it's pluses and minuses. It's on the small side. It's technically public but because of it's location it might as well be a private beach for the hotel. There is what appears to be a man-made rock wall that creates a "cove", which keeps the water calm, which eventually made the older kids a little bored, and there are no beaches with big waves in walking distance. The Embassy Suites cooked to order breakfast was up to the usual standards, but the rest of the food was hit or miss.

Property is clean, but could use some updating.
Front desk staff was excellent, couldn't help enough.
If you are eating at the pool during the day, order as soon as you think you might be hungry, it will take about an hour to receive food after you have ordered.
And if you plan to do any exploring of the Island, renting a car is a good option. Location is good since it is quiet and secure, but the nearest store is 1/2 to one mile away. Just make sure you have a navigation system.

Sometimes giving a review is hard. There are only a couple of small things that seperate this hotel from getting a fourth star from me. On the really great side: ideal location away from the city. The private beach and multi level poolplex allows alot of parental superviison or non at all. Also, you will not find more congeial staff anywhere. Do not be turned away by language. Nearly all the staff spokme perfect English. The breakfast is above standard for Embassy Suites, which we like anyway.
Caveats: The rooms are really nothng special. You get exactly what you expect and they can use a bit of updating. Rooms are clean and immaculate to anyone.
Where are the problems? There were two that affected us and in conversatons in the pool with other HHonors folks, not uncommon: I booked my reservatoins last summer thru the Hotel. I later reconfirmed with HHonors as our dates shifted by one day. I called the hotel around 12/1 and again 12/24 prior to our arrival on 12/25. Desk did not have our confirmation, our room upgrade request nor our dinner reservation made for Christmas Night. Despite three reconfimations, it was a mess. All were resolved, but why were so many reservations messed up. The second minor negative was that they were understaffed for the holiday. There was only one line cook for Christmas Dinner on s buffet line. I don't know about you, but waiting more than 30 minutes for a plate of pasta was rediculous. To the credit of the wait staff, they did everything they could to make all happy. Considering that the Food and Beverage manager never showed to help out, it is a common theme of the issue.
There were NO wait staff to serve around the pool until the day we checked out 12/31.
If you wanted any of their really good frozen drinks, you had to leave the pool. where another guest might take you chair and then get on line at the bar.
Again no sight of the bar manager. The wait staff politely stated and accurately, they were doing the best they could with the amount of staff on hand.
Back to the good news: The ala carte menu was really reasonble priced and quite good fare.
For example we ordered a pizza for $11 and it easily can feed 3 or 4 poolside. Another item price well were there chicken wings at $8, enough for two kids.
So ioverall we were very happy with the menu. Another plus for families, there is a full super marked, Walgreens and Cvs all about a mile from the hotel. With a fridge and microwave in the room, you can really stretch your vacation dollars on snacks and stuff to take to the beach.
I am also going to review a couple of the local restaraunts. While renting a car may seem like a good idea, unless you live in a city of bumpercar drivers and can handle the anxiety of no rules makes right, I suggest taxis.

Room Tip: Rooms on the ocean side offer a nice videw and a breeze. No matter how many times you plan in advanc...

The hotel is a bit dated but is clean. The service was always friendly and prompt. If you are looking to save some money, go to the supermarket just outside the resort area. Food was good and typical hotel prices. Wish they had a shuttle to get around.

We spent 4 nights (during the Christmas week) here to escape from the winter. What we got are bug bites every morning when we wake up. The first two mornings, we dismissed them as probably just bites that we got from the pool area but on the third day, there were more and they were really itchy, making it hard to sleep. I complained to the hotel manager and she advised for me to look on and under the sheets. I found black specks under the bed covers (and our sheets have been changed earlier), under the sheets and on the mattress. She and the security officer came to our room to treat our bites and they can't be sure they are bed bugs (we didn't see the black stuff move) and offered the explanation that it may be from fire ants around the property (which are invisible to the naked eye). I am sure I got it from the bed and I got the brunt of it because I watch TV on the bed while the rest of my family stay in the living room. The manager offered to transfer us to another room but since it was our last night, we begged off as we were already packing. We asked instead that they vacuum and change the sheets. The next morning, we discovered more bites and we told this to the front desk officer who called us to say that there was an inspector. Our room was inspected after we checked out and already gone to the airport. As soon as we reached New York, I was still so upset from the fresh bites, I called the manager and she said the results came out negative for bed bugs. There was another family who complained of bed bugs and she said the inspection turned out negative, too. I found it hard to believe. She said there's nothing she can do but to apologize as the person in charge is the Director of Rooms (who was off for the next two days). I said need a copy of the inspection report and for her to tell her boss to call me asap. Meanwhile, I had to wash everything we brought to and from Puerto Rico in hot water, just to be safe. The director, who came back from his vacation two days after, didn't call. I had to be the one to call him when i didn't get a call by 2 pm. He was curt and he said the results came out negative and that they never had a case of bed bugs, and that in fact, the room was sold to another customer as we spoke. I asked for a copy of the report and he promised to do it. That was Monday, Dec 30. It's already Saturday, Jan 4, and I have not gotten a copy of the report. We were careful in staying only at reputable hotels and somewhere special for Christmas but we were greatly disappointed.
There's hardly any choices for dining, no hotel shuttle to bring guests to the gate (too far to walk), Sand was rocky, hard to go barefoot. Hot tub was small, very crowded, no one monitors,
If you want to spend your hard-earned money, go somewhere else!!

A comfortable and relaxing place for the family. The complimentary breakfast and evening receptions are good. Very clean areas. Lots of people there at the same time, but doesn't fell like there are that many.

Our stay at this hotel during Christmas week was very pleasant. We got a great rate, the service was excellent and the accommodations were good. Room for improvement would be in the bedding. The mattresses were not very comfortable, and while the free breakfast overall was very good, I would stick with omelets and bypass the already prepared scrambled eggs. Also it was a small annoyance to have to use your key to get from the pool area to the beach and then back in to the pool again. The cleanliness of the hotel and the great service more than made up for it, as did the manager's happy hour which was a highlight along with the beach and view.
