“Great New Year at the Embassy Suites in Dorado Beach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2012

Just returned from a 5 night stay between Christmas and New Years day with my wife four daughters and my son in law. Great Hotel, Great Staff, (Marisol, all front desk and all service support team) Met all of our needs and felt perfectly safe. Gated Resort Area. Highly reccomend this hotel. It is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of San Juan but if you rent a car you can easily get around except for rush hour traffic. Plenty to do Zip Line tours, Beach, Golf, and casino. New Years Eve was awesome great party in Lobby or if you want you can pay for a party in the function room with great music and food. All followed by a Fireworks display outside the front door. Great Holiday vacation.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are very nice on upper floors

We just returned from a four day visit in December. We had a very nice time, and the value for what we paid was outstanding. Breakfast was a plus, nice variety and it is complementary. Other pluses - very nice pool, nice scenery, great service on the pool deck, great daily happy hour, and an outstanding sushi and beni Hana style restaurant across the street. A less expensive restaurant on site would have been nice. Also one or two more things to keep kids entertained would be nice, like a miniature golf course or shuffleboard would have enhanced the stay.

Arrived a day early in preparation to depart on a cruise. The property is actually about a 45 minute drive from the airport (by taxi) and add an additional 15-20 minutes to the port. The staff is very friendly and the landscaping of the property is beautiful. The suites were a nice size (pleasantly surprised) but smelled moldy and the bathrooms/linens were not clean. The staff neglected to inform us that the oceanview rooms were almost impossible to get as members that have timeshares get first dibs, so although I requested the oceanview suite and/or pool view, I received a garden view room instead. Don't get me wrong...the view of the garden was OK, but it wasn't what I wanted. The rooms are exceptionally cold and there is "no heat". The receptions staff's only advice was to turn off the AC that was obviously left running all day and open the balcony door to warm the room up a bit. BTW, that didn't work out as well as I had hoped. We requested additional blankets and learned they did not have any additional blankets and when we ordered additional sheets instead, they were never delivered...only to learn that the reception staff had gone for the night leaving a security guard to try to assist us the best he could. Oh, and did I mention that as some of my party did not arrive at the hotel until past midnight, they arrived to no check in assistance either...and they had a confirmed reservation. The linens on the pull out sofa bed were filthy...we had to obtain additional sheets from the security guard to make up the bed for our children to sleep on. My teen boys were still not overly comfortable with the lack of cleanliness and they were cold. The food was so-so (and this was the consensus of all members in my party...me, my mother, father, husband, 2 sons, my brother and his wife), but we all agreed that we did love the grounds. Overall, I would say if you don't mind the cleanliness issue or the cold, distance from the airport/port, and somewhat moldy smelly rooms/hallways, this is a perfect place (for short stays). Although, the price was reasonable, I cannot say that I would ever stay at this resort again. Keep your expectations reasonable/low and you should be fine.

About a half hour taxi from airport. Accommodating staff. Very reasonable prices available with nice value- free tickets for water bottles, free cocktails at happy hour- 5:30-7:30. Buffet breakfast with made to order omelet station. Free wifi. Nice pool and easy access to adequate beach. When extra towels and pillows were requested, were brought promptly.

Across road from entrance was a surprisingly good Sushi restaurant with cooking on tables- most entertaining hibachi style we have seen.

Was looking for a quick beach trip for the family where I could redeem miles, have a nonstop flight from Dallas and not need a passport (5 yr old’s expired). Kids are 8,5, and 2.

TRANSPORTATION
Called the hotel ahead of time to get recommendation for driver and they gave me Pipe’s phone number. I called him 2 days prior to arrival and he picked us up in the bag claim area with a sign. He was always punctual and friendly. The Dorado area is basically served by private taxis, which are not cheap. Airport to hotel $65. Just leaving the hotel to get 1.5 miles and get to dinner is $4 per person each way (they counted all of the kids as 1 extra person). Usually the same taxi that takes you, will either wait for you or return to get you. None of the drivers seem to mind taking you to extra places or waiting for you. If you want to rent a car and park at the hotel, they charge you $10/night. If you plan on going out for dinner each night and doing anything else, it might be worth renting a car. I wish we would have done so.

HOTEL/FOOD
The hotel was as described, and true to the Embassy Suites name. Suites, comfortable beds, nice linens/towels. No problems at all with musty air or warm rooms. A/C was cranking and rooms were clean. Only downside, was that despite the fact that we could see the ocean, we could also see the dumpsters. At certain times, the smell wafted all the way up to the 7th floor, which wasn’t pleasant. This wasn’t the place to just hang out and relax on the balcony. The room did include the ES free breakfast with made-to-order omelets, pancakes, bacon, sausage, cereal, drinks and pastries. Resort was pretty empty for the first few days, but even then, if you arrived towards the end of breakfast (930 during the week), you might be challenged to find somewhere to sit. I can’t imagine what this must be like at peak season. The complementary evening happy hour from 530-730 was just as advertised. Free drinks and either chips and salsa, pretzels, popcorn or bar snacks. Rooms had a fridge and microwave, which was nice. By the pool, small 8oz cups of beer, daiquiri, well drinks, were $8—a little pricey, but no different than most resorts. We ate a large breakfast each morning and then got some nachos, chicken nuggets and a club sandwich on most days. For poolside, resort food, the price was reasonable and the quality was acceptable –not amazing, but no complaints.

POOL
The pool area was nice, with the zero grade entry area, next to a 1 ft deep pool and the playground set. We based ourselves there and could be in either of those areas in 10 steps (or the beach), which was great for the kids. The place was relatively empty the first 2 days we were there so we had no issues finding chairs. We were there in mid-December and were really disappointed by the pool temperature. This was really the only downside of the trip. While the kids were able to endure the cold water, mom and dad didn’t really want to get in to play with the kids. I was surprised that I didn’t read many other comments about the cold water, because if I had, I would have gone elsewhere. We huddled in the hot tub for patches of time, but once 15 people tried cramming into the tub, we decided to exit. They played music at the pool area that was enough to give the place energy, but not too loud to relax or have a conversation. I feel that the place is good for young kids, who can enjoy the kiddie area (age 1-8) or for older kids who don’t need activities to entertain them. We’ve stayed at other properties with lazy rivers, waterfalls, bridges, fountains, which seem to entertain all of us. The hotel had a kiosk where they gave you the towels (needed to remember to bring a signature card each day to check out the towels, which could be kept until 10p), and they also rented/sold inflatable sharks/whales, which the kids could use in the pool. It was something like $10/hour for the inflatables, or you could purchase them for $15. I’ve been to other resorts, where they have balls, shovels, buckets, and other water toys for complementary check-out, which I consider to be a nice touch, which doesn’t cost the hotel much. Unfortunately, this hotel didn’t really offer anything like that. The beach was nicely enclosed, so the surf never got too rough. Again, the ocean water was cold, so we didn’t stay too long. Areas were rocky and others had seaweed, but it wasn’t too bad.

EATING OUT
We ventured out a few times. On the way in from the airport, at 8p, we asked the taxi driver to stop somewhere to eat. He recommended a great Puerto Rican fast food/sandwich shop called El Meson, which was great. The second night, we went to Antojitos de Kitrinche, which is by the public beach and across from Alberto’s. We sat in a covered, outdoor area. The mofongo and churrasco were great. My son and I didn’t care for the marlin sticks. They will also bring you a complementary fish broth. Despite not sounding that appealing, we all tried it. It wasn’t bad. We ate there at 6p and were the only ones there for the first 30-45 minutes. The next night, we went to the Greenhouse. We ordered a churrasco mofongo, corn sticks, and plantain soup. While it was good, I think that Antojitos de Kitrinche was much better.

SUMMARY
Good value property without many other attractions. Seems like a good place to be if you plan on doing nothing but sitting by the pool/beach, playing golf, or driving out. If it rains, like it did for us one day, there is really nothing to do on property. I would have loved it if the hotel ran a shuttle service from the hotel, to the main beach, where most of the restaurants are, or up to the entryway of the property (1.5 miles) where the grocery store, fast food restaurants, and cvs/walgreens were – even for fee. For the price, the property offers good value.

Room Tip: avoid rooms on the side that faces casino/dumpsters.

Thank you for your review on tripadvisor.com and especially for highlighting so many details of our Resort.

I have made a few notes to discuss with our Team as we truly appreciate every feedback we get. It is our #1 goal to always exceed our guest expectations and reviews like these are used as an ongoing tool to continue improving our Customer Service levels.

On your summary you commented on the transportation to and from immediate areas in Dorado. Although we would love to provide this service considering that everything is only a few minutes away, there is a regulation with the government and the taxi commission where the only means of authorized transportation are taxis.

Thank you for staying with us and we wish you and your family a Happy New Year.

Hoping to see you back with us.

We stayed for 4 nights 12/6/11- 12/10/11 Hotel was nice, but security is questionable. Wife had her wallet stolen from room safe. She put wallet in safe upon arrival and never took it out till checkout it was gone. Remote possibility it may have fallen out but doubtful since we would have seen it on floor. Lost all her cash and credit cards and other important documents.put a damper on vacation. After coming home we found out that some hotel safes have a security default code of 0000#. If your hotel safe opens with this code do not use it. I wish we had known before using the safe . We reported loss to hotel staff but no results.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 20, 2011

Our trip was to celebrate 25 years together. We stayed 12/12-18/11. The hotel was very nice and the staff so friendly, patient, and helpful. Everyone spoke English and was more than willing to offer suggestions, directions, etc. The lobby is very attactive and was decorated nicely for Christmas. It was kind of quiet and not too crowded until mid week. The pool/garden area is beautiful. The beach is a small private beach, but beautiful except for the debris along the rock walls. There are plenty of lounge chairs and towels are provided. The free breakfast provides a good variety of hot and cold selections; however, the food wasn't always very hot, and the meats were always over cooked/almost burnt and dry. The Manager's reception of free drinks and snacks was nice, but the same snacks (popcorn, pretzels, a prtezel/cracker mix, and chips and salsa) were served every night. We never used the fitness center, but it looked well equipped. The spa was never open, but we never inquired about it either. The garage was a little walk from the hotel entrance and got very busy/crowded in the evening from the Casino goers. The Casino was fair, but very cold and very lound when a band was playing. The golf course was overpriced, even with the hotel guest discount, as the greens are not well kept. It was fun to see all the iguana running around - they are as plentyful as squirrels in the states. We couldn't have asked for a better view from our room! We enjoyed the balcony; however, a small table would have been nice. The A/C never went below 70 no matter what it was set on. It would have been nice to have a ceiling fan in the bedroom, but the suite was very nice with lots of storage space, a wet bar, mini refrig and microwave. The refrig really kept our drinks cold, not like most hotel refrigerators. The bathroom was spacious with plenty of counter space and good lighting. The shower control was reversed, so when it was all the way on H for hot and cold, it worried me at first. Once we figured out it was reversed, it wasn't a problem for us. The suite was clean and comfortable with 2 flat screen TVs. The restaurant had a fair selection of foods, but would have liked a few less expensive choices. It would have also been nice if there were a food pantry in the gift shop, although the gift shop had plenty of toiletries, souveniers, junk food snacks (chips, candy, etc.) and drinks. The location is about 45 min west of San Juan and from the airport on the north side of the island. Most the tourist activities are on the east side of the island. It takes at least 4 hours to get from one end of the island to the other - lots of traffic. Overall, we were very happy with the hotel and our room. The view was exactly what we were hoping for.

Room Tip: High rooms on the north side have pool and ocean views.

Thank you for the great review on tripadvisor.com and especially for commending our Resort and our Team.

I apologize for the few issues you encountered especially the shower head being reversed and I am sharing this comment with our Chief Engineer. Regarding the table on the balcony, we are hoping to add those this year.

Thank you again for staying with us and we hope you a healthy and happy New Year and look forward in celebrating additional anniversaries with you both.
