if you are planing to go on the beach ,its a little bit too far from this hotel,if you have a car nicest beach its about 30-40 minutes ride ,they also have a public beach but we didnt go there, the hotel is in the center so you have everything there, rooms are clean but there is some smell when you enter the room, the hotel was monastery before ,so if you know the smell when you enter in the church its exactly the same smell, they have very poor swimming pool, very nice staff, there is wifi but you cannot connect from ur room only at reception area.

Its slightly above average. There are better hotels in Mayaguez but none so close to midtown. The other two better hotels are located just off the highway near nothing of importance. I've read the other reviews which are a bit dated. The main difference is there no manhole or reconstruction taking place anywhere nearby nor is there any complimentary breakfast nearby. Here are the Pros and Cons:
Pros:
Just a block away from the Town Plaza,
Not noisy at all,
Helpful staff,
Best Value for your money
Cons:
You get what you pay for,
Complimentary breakfast is weak,
Pool only 3'6" deep. Apx., 20' X 20' wide. very small
Restaurant and dining area very weak.
[Breakfast should still be obtained at bakery across the street to the right at your expense. (in my opinion)]
Parking is available; A small block away but its also a public parking as well.
(The cost of parking will added on to your bill at check out.)
Night life is dull in the immediate area.
The Bar is "OK", the restaurant is not worth even mentioning.
Occasional panhandling surounds the exterior area of the hotel and parking.

Parking is not so expensive but is usually at or above capacity during business hours.
Despite the cons mentioned above it is worth the value.
Recommendations:
(A) You'll want the parking. You have to give them a card when you leave and obtain a card when you park (a bit backwards). Its worth it so accept all the dilemma and it will make it easier.
(B) Most anywhere you travel you'll have panhandling. Its an international vacationing fact.
Most Panhandlers aren't threatening Anything no more than 25 - 50 cents is usually enough. Pre-count your change at the hotel. Always have some in hand and make sure you keep your quarters in one pocket and the rest in another. You choose which pocket to pick from.
(C) unless you enjoy a simple meal for one, avoid eating at the hotel. it is a clean area but not made for family dining. Dining area is by the lobby and front desk so you decide.
My advice, enjoy the bakery nearby and/or any restaurant in town.

Vicinity locations to be aware (as you step out of hotel):
Ricomini bakery. -to the right of Hotel
Corner shop, bikinis taylor made fit -to the left
Rex Cream. Chinese churned ice cream (try Maiz flavor with cinnamon) -front of parking.
Marine World, Local surf and beach clothing store. -across street from Rex cream, past parking (Same street)
Cathedral, Town Plaza & City Hall. Behind and to the right of Hotel.
Free Trolley Ride - To the right of City Hall
Finally- for a real shopping experience try
-Mayaguez Mall (Mayaguez South),
-Mayaguez Shopping Center [2nd floor (Near Town University)],
-Mayaguez North Mall (Near local airport off Hwy Rt. # 2)
all shopping areas mentioned above have ample parking and less than a 20 min. drive.
Mayaguez Mall has the most to offer but if you want to enjoy a movie try any of the other two. [For NEW movie releases at $6.50 a pop that's quite a bargain (in english for the most part)]

None of the other better hotels can say they have so much, so close.
If staying in Mayaguez and not planning to leave the hotel much stay at the better ones. If not, Howard Johnson's is your best value for shopping or if on a budget.

Although the location was good, the poor room condition was inexquiseable. The pool was nothing more than a hot tub. It was only 3 ft. deep. Nobody was ever seen using it. The mildew smell in the room was not pleasant. Our shower stopped functioning on the last day of our stay. The door was dragging on the floor when a screw fell out. The breakfast consisted of stale bagels, coffee, and orange juice, cold cereal. If you wanted an egg omelet, you had to pay 5.00 for one and it wasn't worth it. Your best bet was the bakery across the street. The wait time there was long as it was very busy. You could even get lunch there. Our bed cover had a hole in it from what looked to be a cigarette burn. That should have at least been replaced. We got only two towels on our last day here. There weren't any washcloths included in the room until we bought our own at K-Mart. When they saw we bought our own, they started including one for us. We left the maids tip in the hole on the bed cover. I hope they got the hint. They did clean the room properly. All the trash was emtied and soap, shampoo were left in the bathroom. There is no refrigerator in the room. There is a washer and dryer, mind you, only one of ea. where you could do laundry for 2.00 to wash and to dry which was about the only convenience.

This hotel is very clean. It can be a bit too cold so bring a sweater. The lobby is pretty and has a wide variety of food. They have free breakfast and a small pool. When you enter the elevator, you can see outside. The rooms are very well kept with extra fleece blankets, free shampoo, conditioner, soap, and lotion. The showers feel great! When on the balcony, the view of PR is beautiful. I was on the third floor, but if you go all the way up to the fifth floor, the view is priceless, with beautiful mountains. The downside is, is that you can only receive wi-fi in the lobby and the floors can be very slippery when wet from the people walking from the pool. There are great stores outside as well a souvenir shop. And a great bakery across the street. I am definitely going back here.

We booked this hotel for one night via the website. We printed our confirmation which said "free wifi internet and free breakfast". When we checked in we asked where the breakfast will be served and then we heard that there was no breakfast. But the price was unchanged. I think we were lucky if I read the other reviews on this hotel. We had breakfast across the street at the bakery which was delicious. The free internet worked only in the lobby.
The room was very small but with a/c, flatpanel tv (with poor picture quality) and a safe. The doors of the room are on the outside of the hotel with an open connection to the street. This makes the rooms very noisy. And the hotel is next to a church that has a belfry, which is very nice of course but not if they use it at 6 a.m!
The pluses: free valet parking and the hotel is in the absolute center of Mayaguez.
When we checked out the next morning they needed my credit card again because the girl who checked us in made a mistake or something. That did not feel very comforting.

This hotel in downtown Mayaguez has pretty nice rooms but can be noisy. It’s an old building that originally was a convent. It has a small pool but not many other amenities. They do provide a breakfast coupon to use across the street at the Ricomini Bakery which is another of the great Puerto Rican bakery eateries.

Stayed at the HJ Downtown Mayaguez on a family vacation to PR. While the location is a little down, the hotel itself was perfect for what we needed. The room was a bit small for a family of 4, but it is right across the street from a beautiful town square and church, and a Ricomini Bakery on the other side. The hotel even gave us coupons for breakfast there! We were just using the hotel to sleep and the beds fit the bill without a problem. The water was hot with plenty of pressure. We had adequate towels and pillows and the TV worked as expected. As I said, as a place to sleep for the night, this place was great and the price was perfect. Mayaguez is also the perfect jumping off point for anything you want to do on the west coast of the island. The highlights of our stay here however were the town square and church on one side of the hotel, which is beautiful photo op in the evening, with a statue of Columbus, the church, and town hall. On the other side, the bakery is the place to eat. You can get "comida criollo" (local food), baked goods, dessert, and sandwiches. We ate farina, pork chops, mofongo, chicken, rice and beans, and sweet plantains, 3 different kinds of flan, and ordered sandwiches to go, plus drinks for everyone for about $24.00. We had food for the whole day for less than the price of one meal at a higher end restaurant, and it was all excellent.
