I just returned from a 3 night stay at this hotel and it definitely exceeded my expectations, particularly given the low rates. The staff of the hotel were very friendly and helpful (and all spoke English). Mayaquez is a beautfiul little town and this hotel is right in the city center making it easy to walk to shopping and restaurants. The hotel was very clean, well-maintained and did not appear to have very many guests. Parking was convenient and inexpensive and multiple beaches are available within a 30 minute drive. I stayed on the fourth floor and I loved the balcony with a view overlooking part of the town. In sum, the hotel was very clean, quiet, had good air conditioning and very friendly staff.

If you want a base to explore the western side of PR, Mayaguez is as central as it gets. The HoJos is what you would expect: clean, functional, well run.

Mayaguez isn't the garden spot of Puerto Rico, but the Plaza is nice, and the hotel has character.

There's plenty to eat, and all the shops and services you need nearby.

If what you are looking for is a base of operations which lets you get around the west of the island, and is inexpensive, this is a good choice.

The rooms were not large but still very clean and comfortable. We paid $85 a night. The television was resting on the desk in front of the bed so there is not a lot of space to put items you would normally leave on a desk at your hotel. The furniture is cedarwood (I think) and creates a nice smell. Mayaguez is a great jumping off point for the western part of the island. We stayed here and made day trips to Cabo Rojo, Boqueron, La Parguera and Rincon. I wish we had more than a couple of days. The building itself is very nice, the rooms all sit inside of an open walkway. They do offer a continental breakfast with the bakery across the street which is sparse but we still got a good breakfast there under $5. Be advised, the breakfast tortilla on the menu is actually an omelet. The restaurant also serves lunch and dinner dishes a la carte and is very busy with locals througout the day. Ladies if you have the chance and the time, there is shop up the block owned by a designer who makes custom bathing suits starting at about $70. The pool and pool area are very small. We did experience more panhandling than in San Juan. If you're concerned about theft there is a security guard posted at the hotel 24 hrs and they do have secure fencing around the building gates. There is a guest laundry but the dryer doesn't work very well. I would definitely stay here again when I go back to Mayaguez.
