Even this is a touristic place in Mayaguez, our impression was not so good.Just few animals, and they do not look healthy. Of course we are not veterinarians, but as somebody said:"What you see, do not ask about it".

This is a very sad zoo. Animals were not healthy and not treated properly. Big rumors of it closing down permanently.

The rating is only to let other travelers know the zoo is still closed for damage from the hurricane as of 12/6/2017. This area to Rincón was apparently the "exit" point for the hurricane as it moved across the island, and many places have yet to recover power (no ETA) and clean up downed trees, etc.

The animals in the Zoo are hungry and in poor health. The maintenance of the Zoo is very poor. No veterinarian around the clock to take care of the animals, no medicines and not sufficient food for them.

I have visited the Mayaguez Zoo periodically over the past 20 years. From my experience, the conditions of the zoo have deteriorated steadily. From what I understand, the managers of the zoo have very little to no vision and are not interested in taking advice from professionals around the island or abroad.

Many of the animals are visible depressed; the guards are not bilingual and some of them quite unfriendly; during my last visit, I was accidentally locked into the aviary; the prices have gone up steadily; there are reoccurring reports of escaped animals, including iguanas and snakes, that cause problems in the area.... to name just a few of the problems.

I think that the zoo could be saved with some vision. For one, there should only be animals in the zoo that can have a reasonable life there. For a single elephant, tiger or lion, the zoo is a prison at best. Its time for an overhaul and a paradigm shift that focuses on the most suitable animals for this zoo as well as an increased educational and environmental perspective. Last not least, its also time to look at the economics of the operation - its time to produce more/most animal feed in a sustainable way locally/at the zoo. If a zoo can not play the role of increasing environmental awareness and improved lives for wildlife in general, it has missed its mark entirely.

Literally felt like we walked into Jurassic Park. There were tons of animals walking the paths and the staff were fantastic!

Clearing veterinary care and animal enrichment are non-existent at this zoo. Many of the animals were much too thin, appearaed sick, depressed, lethargic and board. My heart ached for each animal -- as each animal I viewed was "living" a minimal existence. There is zero thought or effort invested in hints of each animals natural habitat. I can't stop thinking about this heartbreaking experience. The Mayaguez Zoo is a prison for innocent animals.

This zoo is terrible. Animals are in very bad shape and condition. The park is dirty and you can not reach any employees. No place to eat inside. Its very pricey for what you will see

Seems that this place was really nice 2 years ago, now you can tell the lack of mainteniance.

Is true that the animals look very sad... and some animals are missing, like the can kangaroo couple, where there is only one left...

Peacocks are walking everywhere, which is ok, but I also found a big iguana walking in the sidewalks...

Definitely they need to do something to restore the place.
