We saw an advertisement for Siglo on a tourist map with the route of the Old San Juan trolley. They claimed to have the best paella and that was on our list to eat. The two of us split the seafood paella for an over-the-top lunch. It does take a while to cook but it was wonderful. It was a massive bowl of seasoned rice with fresh shrimp, sea bass, baby octopus, scallops, calamari and big mussels. We had water with our paella and the bill was $45 and worth every penny and every calorie.

Service was good even with our poor Spanish - it was good that most of the staff spoke some English.

I would recommend the potato & onion tortilla and the plate of Serrano ham with Manchego cheese & tomatoes. Pair with a red wine, and you got yourself a wonderful light lunch.

This way you have room for dessert at the restaurant or one of the nearby cafes.

They also have a special lunch menu at a reasonable price. The atmosphere is that of a Spanish restaurant.

This restaurant was recommended to us by a local person. They told us we could get local food at very reasonable prices. This was exactly what we found. The food was outstanding. Loved the tostones. All of the people were very friendly and made great recommendations. If you dine here, make sure and finish your meal with the delicious flan. I can't wait to go back to this restaurant when we visit San Juan in the future.

Just at the beginning/bottom of Fortaleza, this wonderful restaurant sits. It's appearance, inside, is just ok but the food is great. We had the Plantain soup (seconds please!), the stuffed plantains (with chorizo...enough to share!!), lamb chops with sweet plantains (excellent) and seafood paella (very good). We would certainly go back again. Very yummy food.

We did not have a "meal" during our visit to Siglo XX this time, but this place is the epitome of life in Old San Juan and by just stopping for an appetizer - like empanadas- will show the guest how good is their food, and the pride they take in being hospitable. During this trip, we went there for the famous Mallorca, a sumptuous, sweet, spiral shaped pastry, coated with tons of powdered sugar. We had the mallorca filled with jam and swiss cheese, but you can also have it with just butter. Or buy them plain. They are so delicious, you will have to go back year after year! Mallorca is the Puerto Rican name for the "ensaimadas" which is a pastry from Majorca, Spain. We sat on stools by the cafeteria/bar area and had the joy of chatting with the current owner. Siglo XX has been around for over 50 years and I noticed that they have now a brand new orange juice extractor! The old one had character but... finally broke down. It is also a treat to sit and watch the staff prepare a perfect Zumo de Naranja or as we call it in PR a fresh "orange juice". Stop by Siglo XX at calle Fortaleza, they have great food and you will experience a bit of the Sanjuanero lifestyle. Read the paper, check a map, cool off, have a fragant expresso and be transported to a time when people stopped and smelled the coffee!
