We went to this restaurant as part of a tour. We had the popcorn shrimp and the white bean soup that was absolutely delicious. The owner came over and talked to our group and he seemd very friendly.

I met some friends from law school at this restaurant last week and the host gave my friend a hard time when she changed the reservation from 6 people to 8 people two days before our visit. When we arrived were seated at a big table which made it difficult for the group to converse. Our waiter (I can't remember his name) was not friendly but relatively attentive. The food was great but the portions were small and everything (including the drinks) was expensive. I would potentially return for a special occasion with a date because the restaurant has a nice ambiance and decor but I wouldn't recommend this place for a big group (or anyone who is really hungry).

Blackbruin,
You probably don't even remember, but I happened to be be at the door when your party arrived....hesitantly asking if you could add two more people for dinner? We graciously accepted and moved you to a larger table that could accommodate up to 10 people. Thank you for the kind praise and compliments to our food, it doesn't go unappreciated. The challenge your table received on your recent visit was just simply not committing to the dining experience we offer. A budget of forty dollars per person for food and beverage doesn't allow our team the opportunity to guide you through the menu with more than one plate and one glass of wine. While we are glad you enjoyed it, this will rarely be sufficient to satisfy any food savvy diner, even just for tapas. We recommend the tasting menus of 4,5,6 or 11 & 15 courses for $59 per person with the most expensive @ $79 per person. I think you summed it up best in saying it is not for large groups that want to socialize and hang out, come with your partner and spend two and half hours, while enjoying four to five courses with a wine pairing. This is what we do well, it also comes at a price.....a budget of $100 per person is advisable and believe it or not, it is a remarkable value.
Warm Regards,
Chef/Owner Peter Schintler

Bold combinations of flavor profiles & unique items make Marmalade a foodie's paradise. A professional staff & an outgoing owner/chef make this restaurant a not-to-miss destination in Old San Juan.

This was our first real meal in Puerto Rico. It's located in Old San Juan across from the Casablanca Hotel and was a great treat. The service was impeccable, and the food was amazing. For an Old San Juan stay or visit - Marmalade is a fun place to visit and a treat for the culinary palette. The chef even came out to give us recommendations for our longer stay on Vieques - all which were great.

We came as a group of 38 people, as Pitter the Chef owner told us in advance "do not worry your customers will do more business with you after this dinner" and that to say the list. We took the tasting menu all the appetizers were flowing to the tables, our guest had to choose the main course. Peter recommended red wine Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma, 2009 which was outstanding, and the Kumeu River, Kumeu, New Zealand, 2009 top 100 chardonnay year in year out. Visit the restaurant web page and see all the menu. SUPERB !!! Service is super as well and Pitter is out to make sure every customer get his right attention. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE !!!
