Right on Ashford Ave. (the main drag) in the Condado section of San Juan. Always busy but worth the wait. We stay in San Juan for a month each year and eat there 6-8 times. Haven't found a bad dish on the menu. Waiters are constantly on the move. Manager is first class. They will get to know you quickly. Full service bar. Frequented by locals (a good sign). It's hard to find anything negative about this place(unless you're from NYC.

“Very good pizza”
Reviewed August 19, 2011

Via Appia has been consistent and very popular in San Juan for a long time. The pizza is great, no matter what topping you prefer, because the crust is delicious. Pasta dishes are also tasty, as their lasagna is also very popular. They have a wide variety of beers, and they are always served very cold. Via Appia can accomodate a large group of people in a long table if you need one, as you often see large families or groups of friends sitting together. The outdoor seating in breezy evenings is great to watch people go by. Service is usually more than adequate. Good, informal place to go to for a good meal.

“Great Pizza Place”
Reviewed August 5, 2011

Via Appia is an easy walk from most hotels in Condado and its Italian food provides a welcome counterpoint to Puerto Rican cuisine. Start with a pitcher of Sangria which is fabulous, fruity, and reminiscent of the Sangria served in Spanish cafes. The real deal! After a half pitcher of Sangria, a flip flop might taste good, but I truly believe that even those more sober the prosciutto and onion pizza is a winner. The prosciutto was sliced a little thicker than normal and added a salty bite to the thin crust pizza. Also enjoyed delicious ravioli in Carbonara sauce where bits of the prosciutto seemed to be hiding as well. The salad with gorgonzola cheese was a bit standard with mostly iceberg lettuce and tiny specks of cheese, but the light vinegar dressing balanced the rich and salty notes of the other dishes.

Sitting outside gives a lovely and entertaining view of all the activity of Ashford avenue. It is a restaurant that really could be anywhere in the United States but was blessed with the good fortune of being in Puerto Rico!

“Best Pizza outside of Italy”
Reviewed July 31, 2011

I have to say, I am a major pizza fanatic. We visited Via Appia while in Puerto Rico as it was in close proximity to our hotel and we heard good things about it. We ordered a full pitcher of Sangria between the two of us, and I ordered a sausage pizza. My wife ordered Asapao and Gnocchi. The food was amazing. Having had pizza from a variety of restaurants in the United States, Italy, and Argentina (among other places), I can honestly say that this was the best pizza I've had the pleasure of eating outside of Italy (by far the best food I've ever tasted).

They also have great local food items that can't be beat, at a reasonable price, and a casual atmosphere.

“Worth a miss”
Reviewed May 29, 2011

We had a fair meal here some years ago, when dodging a local shower. We saw favorable reviews, so we made a return. Service was terrible, so much so that we ended up paying for drinks and leaving.
