Our disembarkation port on the Celebrity Summit was San Juan - but our flight did not leave until 7pm. We were so happy to have a full day to spend exploring before heading home, but what to do with our luggage?? Thanks to Cruise Critic, we discovered Barrachina and we are happy that we did. Barrachina is an historic restaurant in Old San Juan which serves great traditional dishes, fantastic pina coladas and, drum roll, will keep you luggage for the day at no cost, though tips are an unstated expectation. We caught a cab from the port (beware of random luggage guys at the port who literally grab your luggage, throw it in the back of the cab and DEMAND a tip!!! - they were so fast, we had no idea what was happening - we had 2 pieces of small luggage, we needed NO help - VERY annoying and simply not cool, leaves a bad taste toward the city in a visitor's mouth) and went directly to Barrachina, arriving around 9:10am. A very nice staff person checked our luggage, showing us the room where it would be securely stored. He gave us a check ticket, we gave him a tip, and we were off for a fun several hours of exploration. We returned around 2pm and had lunch, ordering of course their amazing and truly special pina coladas - the story is that they were invented here in 1963 - and two traditional Puerto Rican dishes - the chicken mofongo and the whole red snapper. The snapper was a bit overcooked, but it was very fresh and flavorful. We loved the mofongo - a fried plantain cake-like thing, covered with very tasty shredded chicken in a delicious sauce - loved it, loved it, would definitely order this again.
The staff was very nice, very good service, food very fresh, clearly prepared to order, and the luggage service is super convenient and helpful!
