“Low key, comfortable, affordable guesthouse in beach neighborhood”
Reviewed March 13, 2010

Coqui del Mar offers the budget minded traveler all of the comforts of home! Located on a beautiful tree lined street with interesting homes, lots of gatos (cats. Go to sleep and wake up to the soothing sound of the coqui! Minutes to the beach, which was a nice blend of other low key tourists and locals. Ocean was a little rough, but swimable (there was a storm passing through while we where there 3/4-3/11). Plenty of restaurants to pick from that are within walking distance, as well as a large grocery store. Noyda was always helpful, pointing us in the right direction! If you are looking for a "party" atmosphere stay closer to OSJ (Old San Juan). Buses are slow, and stop at 9 pm. Taxi will cost you about $20 each way. Save your money and take a tour of El Yunque or ferry to other side of the Island. View my pictures here http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0AcuWjNi0Zsmbk4.

We stayed eight nights in early March. Their website does not claim to be posh or luxurious, but it is certainly comfortable. Both Noyda and Neal spent time with us to help us plan our excursions in San Juan and across Puerto Rico. Having a free laundry on site was a real plus. There was a string of rainy days during our stay, so we appreciated the hot water backup to their solar system; it worked well.
We felt safe in the area. Reading comments that the area is not safe surprised us. It is not a cloistered replica of Disney World. It is part of San Juan. Everywhere we went in Puerto Rico, we saw many more barred windows than in our rural Illinois home. Coqui del Mar takes reasonable steps to make their guests fell secure. We walked extensively, night and day in the area with no problems.

Coqui del Mar is great; TripAdvisor's sotware is not. I spent a lot of time writng a detailed and very positive review with lots of information, and the software lost all the work while I was trying to log in. I was told I could complete the review after login, but the software did not save it or warn me it would not be saved when I reached the logon page. Bad design!

The Coqui del Mar, however, were great, as were Neal and Noyda, who run the place. We arrived after a string of rainy days which knocked out the WiFi and kept the solar water heating unit from generating enough hot water for morning showers. (Thus the complaint from a couple of other travellers.) However, they quickly installed an electric heating unit on the water supply to heat the water, so the problem of insufficient hot water after a string of rainy or overcast days should not occur again.

Our one-bedroom suite was clean, well-organized, and roomy. The big-screen TV and Apple computer worked great. We enjoyed eating at home in the morning and at night, after a long day of sightseeing. The guesthouse is one block from a beach known for its extraordinary kitesurfing. The beach is empty during the week. There are many more people on weekends, but the beaches are more than ample.

Public bus transportation into San Juan is irregular, especially on the weekend. The busstop at the beach is a lovely place to wait if one has patience and perhaps a book, but be forewarned that there are no published bus schedules.

The Coqui is, therefore, a perfect place to stay for beachgoers and people planning to rent their own transportation. We used public transport every day. Even for us the location made up for the inconvenience of inconsistent busses. Not everyone may feel this way. Otherwise, however, our week at the Coqui del Mar was a wonderful respite from winter in Boston. Noyda and Neal couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating, though I am certain that Neal did some crazy things as a young man growing up in the rural Midwest.... :-)

Finally, we find TripAdvisor very useful. Only wish they'd make their software more user friendly for first-time reviewers. It would make sense to make reviewers log in before beginning a review, so that this kind of thing wouldn't happen. If we hadn't enjoyed our experience so much, I would never have taken the time to do this a second time...

Coqui del Mar was was nothing but a fabulous, positive experience. The guesthouses were spacious, well-supplied, totally comfortable, and very tastefully decorated. The location, one block from the beach on a beautiful, tree-lined street, was incredible. But the best part was Noyda, the on-site manager of Coqui del Mar. When faced with a stressul, unexpected travel situation, Noyda was with us on the phone until the wee hours of the morning making sure we were safe, comfortable, and content. Her kindness and giving made our stay simply wonderful!!!

Coqui del Mar and Noyda made this a perfect place to stay. I not one single complaint. Great place for the value. We stayed in the El Pescado unit. Our trip was for 9 days. So nice, very clean, extra towels in room, they have tried to have everything you need to enjoy the area, beach towels, chairs, etc. Even a computer for internet access in the room. Noyda is very helpful. So peaceful, quiet, safe and relaxing, especially after a long day exploring the island. Location is perfect to get out and see the island. You must ask Noyda how to get to Casita Blanca for lunch at least once.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
If you want to experience Puerto Rico like a local while still having all the conveniences of home, this is your place. We make you feel at home. You have private personal space (all rooms have private kitchens and private bathrooms), while in a beach side neighborhood setting away from the crowded tourist areas. You will experience some of the best Puerto Rico has to offer while living like a local, visiting the restaurants frequently visited by locals (no chain restaurants near us). We are in the Ocean Park beach area of San Juan, in between Old San Juan and the international airport. We are 3 minutes walk to the nearest beach. Ocean Park beach is one of the locals's favoites, and also a preferred spot for kite surfing and windsurfers. We are 5 minutes walk to the tourist bus route (which goes to the casinos and to Old San Juan) and walkable to restaurants and grocery stores. Each of our units have full kitchen, free WiFi, cable TV/DVD, Apple TV, in room safes, and an Ipod player. We strive to provide more than expected, and I think you will find that with us, from the beach chairs, or bicycles to the in room safes, there are never extra charges. One of the best things about us is our live in management, Noyda and Neal, who call Coqui del Mar home and welcome you as if it is your home as well. They are local experts and can help you find a great restaurant, plan a special event, or enjoy a chat. Our courtyard, bar-b-que and jacuzzi are great for meeting other guests. If you are looking for personal service and a unique, eco-friendly (we have solar hot water supplemented by electric, ceiling fans supplemented by ACs, and offer recycling), and a clean guest house for a reasonable price, then check us out. We are not a Marriott and offer our own unique sense of quirky and intimate Puerto Rico. Come join us. *Our free parking is on a public street in front of our location. Not difficult to find a spot, but it is not designated parking for our guest house and is open to all. * Airport transportation acknowledges that there is taxi service from the airport. **Free parking is on street parking ... more   less
