“Amazing Classic Puerto Rican Architecture”

This is a great place to stay for so many reasons. This is a three level home that has been totally renovated. It is a beautiful building that has been correctly and tastefully renovated. There is a rental unit on each floor. The fist floor is home to a museum for Santos.

Richard, the owner is the perfect host. He is always available by text, email or in person. He has a wealth of knowledge of the area and a true concern to make your stay a memorable one.

The house is centrally located in Santurce. It is walking distance to Museums, Pueblo Market, Walmart, Tren Urbano and the Mercado. Many restaurants and night clubs are nearby. It is walking distance to the beach or you can take the bus part way. If you are staying in San Juan you don't need a car. Bus, Train, Uber and Taxi's are readily available. If needed, car rental is nearby.

We stayed on the first floor earlier this year. Both places are nice. They come with everything you could possibly need and more. The neiborhood is very safe and the people are wonderful Puerto Rican friendly.

Santurce is home to a wall mural festival. I included some pictures of murals you can see in the neiborhood.

“Excellent local experiences!”

Richard's hospitality made this trip perfect. It is during the holiday season. We were brought to the parties and enjoyed the food, drink, and conversations with local folks. In addition, the kitchenware was well equipped. We enjoyed cooking during stay. (Grocery is in walking distance too.) Finally, we loved the district where the rental place is located. Close to beach, many mirrors, and near by art museum.
It was wonderful.

“Home Away From Home”

Staying at 456 Calle Saldana is like visiting a long lost relative who gives you their house, shows you around, and then leaves you alone except when you have questions.

First of all, the layout of the second floor is really well thought out. Two balconies - one on either side so you can always get sun or shade depending on what you want. The front balcony is off the fully equipped kitchen which makes for wonderful dining and keeps things cool if you decide to cook (I meant fully stocked - we cooked 7 or 8 meals and found everything we needed).

The back patio has two hammocks, another sitting area, and entry from both the bedroom and living room. And the best part is you can open up all the patio doors and get a sensational cross-breeze going throughout the floor. Alternatively if it's get too hot, you can shut up both the living room and bedroom and kick on the air conditioning. Everything is done with an old-world charm and attention to detail that is rarely found in a rental.

My wife was a little concerned initially at the idea of sharing the house with other renters, but after seeing first hand how everything was set up she was set at ease. We could have gone the entire time without seeing or hearing any of the other guests (except for passing in the lobby) if we didn't want to. And the second floor had a lock both to the floor and the bedroom. By the fifth night we had met the renter upstairs and we all cooked dinner together and ate in the spacious common dining area.

The space alone would be enough for us to go back. But having Richard "managing" the house is a luxury that can't be overstated. I put "managing" in quotes because that barely scrapes the surface of what he does. For simplicity's sake I'll just list some of the things he does that go above and beyond:
- Met us very early in the morning (red-eye flight), helped us talk to the taxi driver (over the phone), helped us into the house, and here's the kicker: had milk and pastries in the kitchen in case we were hungry before we passed out.
- Walking tour of the neighborhood, including really detailed history as well as up to date recommendations on places to shop, eat, drink, go out, etc.
- Helped us find a car rental company for a day trip
- Explained the bus system to us
- When he would hear about cool things happening in town he would post them to the bulletin board in the lobby
- He has a free, fully stocked coffee/tea bar in the lobby where he might put out an authentic native hot sauce or some other treat.
- Also in the lobby he keeps a stash of beach towels, sun screen, bug spray, anti-itch creams, first aid kit, maps, quarters for the bus, rolling bags you can pack up and take to the beach or the grocery store. There wasn't a thing we could think of that we needed that he didn't already have down there.

Random other things we found helpful:
- Good wifi. Cellular data on the island is really poor so this was actually very important.
- Surprising amount of closet space.
- Reading lamps everywhere
- Really cool ambient lighting on both balconies. Most nights we would use that as our only light. Makes for romantic dinners in.
- Ceiling fans in both the living room and bedroom. Between that and the cross breeze we only used the air conditioning at night.

“Perfect for 2 people in San Juan”

Our host was completely above what we ever expected. He met us at the door, let us get settled, and then took us on a very complete tour of the neighborhood. The neighborhood is a little alarming, especially when we visited during the holidays, and many of the places on Ponce de Leon were closed. Getting the tour was very reassuring about safety, as well as being informative. We were able to visit most of the places Richard pointed out.

The apartment is just wonderful, especially the kitchen, which had everything we needed, including coffee, tea, and three(!) coffee makers. We used the stove top espresso maker.

The king sized bed is very comfortable. There are two outdoor spaces: a balcony on the street and a deck in the back which is very private.

We did not rent a car because of the season, but the bus was just fine for getting around to Old San Juan. The beach is about a one mile walk, but we are not beach people, but we went several times and enjoyed the ocean.

The building is also home to a museum of figurines and statues of saints from households around Puerto Rico, and they reward contemplation.

We hope to return to this wonderful place again, but next time we will choose a different time of the year, so we can rent a car, and more places will be open.
