“Great Lobby & Pool Area, Average Rooms”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

We chose La Concha because of its NYE party - which was a great time.

The lobby has a bar in the middle, which has a good crowd each night. The pool is small, but there are two large jacuzzi's - its a pretty area to sit and hang out in, but not the best if you are looking for a large pool to swim in. The beach area is also nice with lots of chairs, beds, umbrellas etc to hang out in.

There are three restaurants in the hotel: Perla (not owned by the hotel), Voga, and Solara. Solara is fine for poolside food, Voga is where breakfast is (and it is also an Italian restaurant for lunch and dinner). The reviews for Voga are horrible but we found it to be above average/pretty decent food - we ordered breakfast off the menu versus doing the buffet, and we had dinner there one night which was pretty good. The staff for dinner were extremely friendly, not the same was true for breakfast. The service is VERY slow at both restaurants though.

Now the rooms - we had a city view suite. The room was average at best. It felt like an old Embassy Suites room if you have ever stayed there (basic 3 star room with either a King or two doubles, a sofa bed and small kitchenette). The room was a decent size but felt like a no-frills hotel room. We did find that it was pretty quiet despite the busy party-like atmosphere in the hotel and on the street.

Wifi: Was happy to have wifi working for free throughout the hotel.

Stayed here for a long weekend with my husband and another couple in early November. Upon arriving at close to midnight, the staff was welcoming and informative from exiting the cab to the front desk to the luggage delivery. The staff provided lots of recommendations for meals and things to do. They also provided us with coupons for free drinks at some local eateries. The hotel lobby was very modern and clean as was our room. We had a suite on the 11th floor which faced the ocean - absolutely beautiful view. Comfortable bed, clean, clean, clean. Only two negatives to note - room keys (electronic) often did not work which was very inconvenient when we got to the 11th floor to only have to go back to lobby for a replacement. This happened 3 or 4 times during our stay. The other thing was that housekeeping did not replenish soaps and towels well. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ocean view, high floor

Went to LaConcha for their New Year's celebration. Truly a first rate affair that draws all the "beautiful people". The set up for New Years was exceptional. It was perfectly managed (including making sure nobody got too "out of hand" with their celebrating... although plenty of well-dressed people had no issue jumping in the pool at midnight!) Great music and entertainment. Great food. Only reason I did not offer a five star is that the cost was a little over the top. I expect expensive but at $20.00 per drink after paying over $100.00 entrance fee.... it's pretty steep. I had to limit my drinking a little (not a bad thing I guess) and had a great time.

My husband and I stayed here over New Years, and had really been looking forward to the vacation. I researched and couldn't decide between the Stellaris and La Concha, and thought from my research that the La Concha was the best bet. After staying at the La Concha, I'm positive that we made the wrong choice.

Positives -- the bell staff (Felix!) were great and the lobby is gorgeous. The beach was pretty nice and the waves were fun to ride. We had a city/water view suite (1080) which had a wrap around balcony overlooking the pool and a partial ocean view.

That's pretty much where the positives end. We got to the hotel at 3pm, check in is at 4 so our room wasn't ready. Totally understandable. So they said they'd call us when it was ready. Never got a call, showed up at 5 and got our room. We were told we'd get our Platinum Elite welcome gift of a cheese tray sent right up. An hour and a half later, no cheese tray. I called the front desk, twice, to ask about it. Finally, 2 hours and 20 minutes after check in, we got our cheese tray.

We are Platinum Elite members, and the concierge was closed for the holiday, so we were told we'd get buffet breakfast every morning instead. Well, we came downstairs and it was a pretty sparse continental breakfast -- pastries, yogurt, coffee, water, juice. We ate our breakfast, and then saw a buffet breakfast at one of the restaurants. We asked whether that was the one we were entitled to, and the girl called her manager and confirmed, yes, that we could use the buffet for the rest of the trip. So we went to the front desk to make sure it was ok that we did continental that one morning, and they said we are, in fact, ONLY allowed to have continental. That was annoying since the buffet seemed way better. So every time we went for the continental breakfast, the cashier was confused when we told them that we had the "included" breakfast for Platinum members. A couple times we were asked if we had vouchers, and sometimes we had to sign a paper charging to our room, and sometimes we didn't. We went to the front desk on two different days to make sure our breakfasts weren't being charged to our room since they were supposed to be complimentary, and we were assured that we were not getting billed.

Well, on our check out day, we received a 19 page bill, with charges from September - January (we only stayed 12/30-1/4). The bill was also $700 more than it should've been. We went to the front desk to get it figured out, and the man said it would take a little while, but he would have it all fixed by the time we checked out (a few hours from that time). So we went to the beach, grabbed lunch, and then went back to checkout. I explained that we did not have an updated bill, since there were issues that were being resolved on the bill. Sure enough, they printed us out another 19 page bill. Apparently, they'd been charging every single Platinum member's breakfast to our room instead of some "master account". It took them 20 minutes to figure that out. So frustrating.

Other than that, the beds were hard as rocks. I'm taking asphalt hard. It was so uncomfortable, and the pillows were equally terrible. The furniture was Ikea quality, not what we expected from such a highly rated Renaissance. There was a NYE party at the pool, with extremely loud music and thumping bass until 4am. So loud that we could barely hear each other in our room. I can't imagine what it must have been like for people with children staying at the hotel. Also, we had someone knock on our door on three different occasions to bring us laundry. We didn't have any laundry done. Oh, and the ironing board was corroded and bent. We asked one of the maids to bring us another, but she just took the one we had an never brought a new one.

We've been to several Marriott resorts and this was the worst. We didn't feel special at all, and everyone was so completely disorganized and uninformed. I felt like I got different answers from everyone on everything, the whole stay was just stressful. I would never stay here again. We walked over to the Stellaris on our last day and it seemed much better. If you DO go to PR, I'd stay at the Stellaris.

We greatly enjoyed La Concha. Nice pools, a great beach area, and very good food. The casino is not large, but was still good. They threw a fabulous New Year's Eve party. The concierge did an excellent job recommending restaurants in the area - many in walking distance and others were short cab rides away. One small issue: at least in late December the building causes most of the beach to be in the shade for much of the day.

La Concha has the friendliest Bellman to greet guests as soon as they arrive at the resort! We were immediately welcomed as "Familia" upon our arrival, as well as each & every time we returned from a day outside the resort. Mr. Felix Perez has such a warm, inviting presence that we knew we could rely on him to help with any questions we had about where to find whatever the area (AND he always delivered)! He is such a sweet man & we can only wish there were more people with his uplifting, positive personality on this planet!

Our experience at La Concha was like December weather in Puerto Rico--very mixed. It's a beautiful resort and the staff was uniformly friendly (particularly the concierges); however, service was spotty. The food at Solera was good, but for two of our three meals we waited well over 45 minutes for our food (our waitress even said she was embarrassed and brought us chips). Our room (jr suite) was spacious with a gorgeous view of the beach from the master bedroom, but the balcony looked over the back of a public strip with Ben & Jerry's and other restaurants and was quite loud a couple of the evenings we were there. We had to call 3 times for the TV in our bedroom to be fixed. The hotel charged a 16% resort fee (which meant that the fee doubled as our room rate went up over the holiday week), yet on the most beautiful day there we had to wait an hour for 4 beach chairs and never stood a chance at an umbrella (although we were told that each room was 'assigned' one). The pools are lovely, but if you have younger kids be forewarned--most of the activity happens around the pool, not in it. We would definitely return to Puerto Rico, but I think we'd look at other hotel options the next time around.

Room Tip: Jr suites numbered 401, 501, etc.are corner suites with balconies which look out over the back of a...
