“Fun Experience”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

Like some other reviews, we stumbled upon this place while in Old San Juan trying to find a place for dinner. Also like some other reviews, we met the owner who interacted with our large group and offered to select his best dishes for the group to share. We certainly weren’t expecting this to be free, and in the end we thought it was a good experience. (I read in some reviews that people were surprised to be getting charged for what they thought were free appetizers.) He asked us about food preferences and provided appetizers, main courses, dessert and a shot. It wasn’t cheap, but we did not think it was overpriced. In addition to the food, our bill had a good number of drinks, and we also ordered the king crab leg as one of the main courses, which he asked about up front because of the cost. Cost per head was right in line (or less) than other group dinners that we split during the trip. I’m drawing a blank on the appetizers, but the king crab leg, churrasco steak and tiger prawns are memorable from dinner. I remember there being a few items that we did not prefer, but they weren’t bad by any means.

“Overpriced drinks, but in a great setting”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

If you're okay with spending an arm and a leg for drinks to sit in an open, breezy courtyard with live music near El Morro, then stop on by. The bartenders were nice, but it took a long time to get their attention, even though there weren't many people being served. We were charged for whole coconut drinks , even though we didn't get one (at the time they weren't cold yet), just a drink with coconut water. When we let her know that's not what we drank, she didn't believe me (our bartender was working another section), so we just paid and left. We didn't have the food, this review is based on the outdoor bar.

“really unimpressed”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

i attended Ostra Cosa on the totem on a Friday night, I was really hungry, so I wanted to see what all the fuss about their mussels and octopus salads was about. we waited about ten minutes to make somebody notice us, so, my husband got up and got the drinks and menus. we ordered the "pulpo picao" (bland, sad tiny pieces of tentacles, tiny, really) and I had the "papa espachurra" with lobster. (if it wasn't for all the veggies, I think I would've returned it.) the red potato had this breaded, and deep fried little nuggets of lobster. again, no flavor. local beer was $5.+ . so we ended paying over $50. for sad food. at least there was a little upside... the band that was playing was good.

Greetings kokylo:

Sad to hear your experience was not a remarkable one. The pulpo picao (minced) had the description(little octopus salad), sorry our staff didn't clarify that for you. The Real Smashed Potato is one of our customers favorite. Thanks for your feedback.

Hope the experience get much better in our "Isla del Encanto"

“What a pleasant surprise!”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

We dipped into this corridor to try and cool off a while. It was weird to see a restaurant in the middle of what seemed like a hallway. But since it looked nice, we thought we'd take a chance. The servers were really laid back and so we mentally prepared for laid back food. We were so wrong. These tapas were amazing! Everything was fantastic and you could tell great care was taken in the presentation as well. They have a calamari dish with a dipping sauce that includes squid ink! Check out the pictures. The empanadas tasted made-to-order. This place is near the top of the hill in Old San Juan. Now, you don't have to stumble across it, you can just go:)

“Highlight of Our Trip. Thanks Alberto”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

Why this restaurant is not #1 on trip advisors list of Restaurants in San Juan, I'll never know.

Long Story: For our group of eight starving, hot, tired adults in thier 40s, our expectations were way too low. But, the owner, Alberto gave us the best experience of our stay. While we sat pondering over the menu, he came and sat at the empy chair at our table and recommended that he choose our meal by asking a few questions about our dietary interests such as "What's your favorite meal? What's you least favorite? He promised to give us a journey for our palate. He guarantees the quality by stating that if we didn't like the dish, we didn't have to pay. Nevertheless, we were slightly concerned wondering if they just had a shortage of food in the kitchen or maybe we were going to get hit with an astrominical bill. But we were hungry and he was very charming so we went for the bait. He fooled us on both counts.
He perfectly matched our desires and was even able to accommodate the fact that one of our group members was allergic to seafood. The food was unique, delicious and beautiful. He served everything from the menu it seemed, from beef, to chicken, to plaintains, to yellow rice and beans, salmon, huge huge shrimp, 2 ' crab legs, octopus, etc. etc. etc. At least 12 -14 dishes for the group to share. Each dish had a new sauce to make the experience even better. We were stuffed. Not too mention that there were drinks galore. Arctic grape rum shots, fresh lime juice. WOW! What an afternoon.
In between rounds of drinks, appetizers, and the main course, Alberto took the time to talk with us. He is quite the gentleman. he entertained us with his conversation. he came back to the table many times to make sure we were satisfied and too make sure that the person allergic to seafood had the best experience also. The bartenders, waitresses, chefs-we met them all. Very very freindly and made us not only enjoy the meal but made us feel good and happy...If you are in a rush, this is probably not the place for you. We were easily there for 3 hours. It threw off the rest of the schedule, but it was worth it. Alberto was beyond generous and the experience was so amazing that he inspired me to write my first ever. And guess what. The cost was half of what I guessed it was! Unbelieveable.
Alberto was able to fit this remarkable experience into a more than reasonable price for both a ton of food and mucho drinks. This was of the most unique dining experience I have ever had. I hope to return if I ever come back to Puerto Rico, I will make a visit to Ostra Cosa a top priority.

Long Story Made Short: Great People. Great food. Great Atmosphere. Well within Budget!

Dear Kim:

Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for your fabulous assessment of our humble restaurant. Rest assured that your experience was as much fun for your group as for myself. Even though I had not answered your kind words for such a long time I fell them as if it just happened yesterday. It is people like you who make it all worthwhile. It was a pleasure to serve you and your friends.

Big Hugs,

Alberto
