The benefit of this hotel is its location. You can walk to every restaurant, attraction, etc. Yes, it is an old building (no windows) and the elevator is slow but to me, that's what gives this hotel some character. It is not the typical fancy building most people are used to. I would definitely stay there again. The people were friendly and the rooms were clean.

I have read many reviews about this hotel before deciding to stay here for one night before the cruise. The hotel is in a central location in old San Juan, I know I shouldn't expect much based on other reviews, but it was worse than I expected. There was no wait to check-in since we were the only guests in the lobby. The elevator didn't work, we had to drag our luggages all the way up four floors! The ice machine also didn't work. The front desk staff didn't seem to care, she was on the phone for a very very long time. If you have to stay in old San Juan, this hotel has the best location, be prepared to walk up and down the stairs, I have the impression that the elevator doesn;t work most of the time! The restaurant in the hotel( actually doesn't belong to the hotel) is about the only good thing beside the location of this hotel.

We stayed here for two nights before our cruise (February 2008-sorry date list didn't include this date). At first I was concerned with the lack of windows, but it wasn't a problem. The room was clean, the staff friendly and helpful, the continental breakfast was plentiful and had a great assortment. The location was amazing! We often sat in the town square which is soooo close and drank coffee and people watched. We felt very safe as we walked from shop to shop. Fabulous time! Looking forward to returning!

Room Tip: Go with the flow! This is an historic building in a centuries old town! If you have to be catered...

An old building with tastefully decorated rooms, modern plumbing, free wifi.
The catch? Many of the rooms are windowless, so if you require a window, keep looking. Wonderful location on the Plaza in Old San Juan. Convenient to forts, stores and restaurants. Walk to transit. Taxi stand at front door. I will be back!

This is a three hundred year old hotel in old San Juan. Not like any other Howard Johnsons in the world. No free breakfast or parking but clean rooms and great air conditioning. The shower was also very clean and the water pressure and temperature were wonderful. The beds were fine and again very clean (no bugs!) There are no windows in most of the rooms but this didn't seem to be a problem with the mirrored amoire and high cellings. There is no interior design or beautiful anything in this hotel it is just a clean safe place to rest in a great location. You safely can walk to everything and the night life is grand.

We spent two nights here before switching to a nicer place. I cannot caution people enough about staying here.

This hotel used to be army barracks 50 years ago. There have been no serious renovations since then...

Our room was windowless. Because of a storm, the tv, internet, and phone were out.
The AC was a wall unit that was controlled by the hotel. It was super loud and it gave the room a musty smell. The second night, the room became freezing and we had to find an employee at 2am (not an easy feat) to give us the remote to lower it.

The elevator fits 2 people at a time. If the elevator door is not fully closed, it will not move.

The people at the front desk were very nice though. The location of this dump is great too. But I wouldn't stay here for free.

We have done major improvement since your last visit.
We are an historic 1900 building and protected under the Instituto De Cultura De Puerto Rico.
The last remodelation of the building occured in 2005.
We have 9 Suites and Suites Plus with windows and balcony but our major rooms are interior windowless.
We can not control the weather, we have a hurracan period from June 1 up to November 30, so if we have a storm all we have to do is trying to do our best.
Must of our air conditioning has a remote control or a thermostate to control de temperature.
We have a front desk service 365/24/7.
Our elevator is a Lula type which means that can not be a modern one because of our historic characteristic. It allows 4 people or 1,200 pound. Besides we have people for helping guest with thier luggages.

We would like to have you once again and experience a great joyce in Old San Juan.

We stayed here with another couple for 4 days pre-cruise.

Location: I thought it was perfect. Walked around the city every day, much quicker to walk anywhere versus taking a taxi. The streets are very narrow and VERY congested. The plaza was very loud into the weeee morning hours but we were there for New Years Eve and the party didn't stop!

We did have a balcony on our room which was nice. Sat out there every night. Not much privacy from your neighbors. The doors that lead from your room to the balcony...well let's just say I hope it doesn't rain or become very windy when you are here or you would be in for a surprise. There were huge gaps(which I suppose means bugs can come in also) in the doors.

There was at least half an inch of noticeable dust on the top of the curtains as well as the pipes below the bathroom sink. I had a controlled substance (prescription) that was stolen on the second night(so guess who didn't sleep?!) The front desk didn't really care and in fact stated their staff would do no such thing..end of story.

The air conditioner worked perfectly. Good water pressure, and hot water always..even on the top floor. Sitting area with TV toward back of hotel but no working vending machines, coffee, books etc...

We kept our luggage in the lobby when we checked out as did most everyone else. We were welcome to return to the hotel at any time to use the bathroom or sit and relax before we could board the ship at 4pm or so. This was nice! The luggage was everywhere and they were busy checking in people so it is not "watched"

I think this hotel would benefit from having food available. There is room in the back sitting area, there may even be a bar but I can't remember, that could be used.

Elevator is scarey! It quit working when we were there, they put a sign on the main floor only that it was out of service. A cable was frayed and was fixed the following day. It would have been nice to have a sign on EVERY floor instead of having guests get in and wait forever(thank goodness the cable didn't snap!)

No problem getting a taxi. They took all of our luggage and to the cruise terminal we went, for $28.

We stayed here only because my husband had racked up enough points and it was "free" for us. I would NOT spend what they charge to stay here and I am a pretty low maintenance person.

Thanks for taking the ime to review our facilities. I totally agree with you about the great location that we have at Hotel Plaza De Armas. At the moment the Old San Juan City is not a complete walkable city but there are at this moment major improvement to convert it into one.

Our balcony are French Style so it's almost impossible that you have privacy from your neighbors. We can not control the wheather but we can offer you all year around the best sunny days in the world and that is the main reason a lot of people from the cold states are looking from us.
We have an excellent bugs control program at our property where every month there is a fumigation action going on. So we have a barrier aginst bugs.

We have take apropriate measure to control the situation with the dust you mention and have been remove and constantly review for mantenance in order that this kind of situation never happen again.

Our staff Front desk and Housekeeping personal are very honest and hard worker people who have been trained in a monthly base about excelente hotel service and are constantly supervised in order to mantain our integrety and prestige.

We have done major improvement in our facility to keep our service and amenities in excelent standing. Now we keep the luggage in a secure place and with name & room numberbtagged to avoid errors.

At the moment we have a new concesionary restaurant at the front "The Bleu Bistro" where you can enjoy an amazing food at an affordable price.

Our elevator is a Lula type which means that can not be a modern one because of our historic characteristic. This are the same kind you find in old building in Europe. It allows 4 people or 1,200 pound. Besides we have people for helping guest with their luggages.

We are glad you can enjoy all the beauty of our Hotel and City for such as price.
I hope next time you can come to us I could personally take care of you..

Thanks for your review..
