“Tucked away but found!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2014

Walking down the streets of San Juan, take in all the signs as this is how we came to find Tropical Taste. As you walk through a storefront you come to the facility in the back. The food was wonderful as we had the chicken soup - made while we waited! And fresh plantains to boot! Check them out for real food with flavor.

“Get the mofongo!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2014

Tucked away behind a clothing & jewelry store, this spot is a welcome oasis on a hot sunny day. My only complaint is that some days they had beer, somedays they didn't. The food, though, was amazing - flavorful & well portioned. Ate there several times and never had a bad meal.

“Excellent Puerto Rican Food behind Kamel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2014

We were exhausted after we walked around National Historic Site and Old San Juan. We needed to find some souvenir and good lunch in Old San Juan. We found a good souvenir, chess sets made in Peru, at Kamel where they had a variety of gifts or souvenirs. When we paid for the item, casher told us there was a restaurant behind the shop. So we tried.

The restaurant and their service were OK, but we liked their food so much. We, two adults and 10 year old boy, ordered Mofongo Carrucho, Pechuga de Pollo al Ajillo, Kid Pasta, and soft drink. All our food were excellent and we enjoyed their food so much. They were one of our best Puerto Rican food in our trip. It cost $57 including tips.

We will go back this restaurant when we are in Old San Juan.

“Best lunch I've ever had”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2014

Walking the streets of SJ we came across the restaurant sign on the outside. At first, it was confusing because it's a gift/clothes store but don't be fooled. The food was completely authentic and the best was the coconut flan. They also have vegetable platters for those of us....I had mofongo stuffed with veggies. Delicious!!. We will be back..

“The best meal of my trip”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2014

Tropical Taste is in the narrow little streets of Old San Juan tucked in the back of a gift/souvenir shop. My friend and I had been walking all day and we were starving but wanted authentic Puerto Rican food.

The special of the day was the Pernil (slow roasted pork) served with rice and beans. It was very reasonably priced compared to the rest of the tourist areas in San Juan and the food was absolutely amazing! I had a huge portion of pork and the flavor was almost like Kalua pork in Hawaii in the fact that it was slow roasted and the pork flavor wasn't overpowered by the seasonings or spices.

I also ordered an appetizer of mashed plantains that were rolled into a stick and deep fried (kind of like a corn dog batter) and a sauce for dipping..it was very good and a perfect compliment to the meal. The waiter was attentive and answered our questions and spoke very good English. This meal, by far, was the best meal of my trip. If I'm ever back in Old San Juan, I will look this place up.
