“Best Meal in San Juan”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2011

We really enjoyed our visit to Jose Enrique. It was difficult to find and in a non-touristy part of San Juan and there is no signage on the outside of the restaurant. We parked on the street and walked up to the hostess who promptly sat us. The ambiance was bustling with lots of people all around on a Thursday night. The food was outstanding, the best meal we had in Puerto Rico. We had the crab, homemade sausage, rabbit stew, and skirt steak--not a single miss out of all the plates. Also some of the best mojitos/margaritas we had on the entire trip. Definitely worth seeking this place out. Also a great value for what you get, out bill was a little over $100 with tips and drinks.

“best meal of the stay”

Do not miss this restaurant - a hidden gem, known mostly to locals. The basil ice cream is beyond belief.

“Worth seeking out!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2011

I agree with the reviews that say this is the best restaurant in San Juan. It's in the Santurce district a $15 and 15 minute cab ride from old San Juan. Their specialty is a whole fish fried (but lightly like a good tempura) with a delicious avocado and papaya mixture on a bed of mashed sweet potatoes. It was all incredibly fresh and tasty. The appetizers we had were also excellent--a crab salad in corn meal cups was a stand-out. A trick is to ask if they have anything special that isn't on the menu (a white board) which led us to sampling some amazing ceviche. I asked the staff where can we eat like this in Old San Juan and they said the rents were too high there so they couldn't spend money on quality ingredients which is the focus of the cuisine here. Jose is opening up another restaurant called Capital. We were in San Juan for 6 nights--went here twice and would have gone more but they close on Sunday and Monday. What I liked best is the food was uniquely Puerto Rican. The staff was super too.
