Oceana Hostal Playero
Ranked #22 of 30 San Juan B&B and Inns
Reviewed March 8, 2012

My wife and I just stayed here March, 2012. We were looking for an inexpensive place to overnight close to the airport, and the Oceana worked fine for that. We arrived earlier than the 3pm check-in and they offered to store our bags (they had plenty of company-others' bags too) while we went out and enjoyed the beach. The rather stiff penalties of $300 for smoking inside, $100 for lost key, etc were clearly explained to us. We met two staff that were both very pleasant and helpful - the 20ish young woman would not let me carry our bag up to the second floor, and it almost out-weighed her (and I'm 6-3, 205, not that old and in good shape). Our 5am wake-up "call" was a soft knock on the door and the morning staff pleasantly called us a taxi. The front desk was staffed 24/7 and there was a locked security door to get to the rooms. The roof top was nice - a mother and two daughters were playing cards up there. The place is older and it shows, we found everything to be clean, we left before breaskfast. We would use it again for the same purpose.

Room Tip: We had a "Run of the House" reservation - no refunds. Our room had a balcony, we did not...

Worst place I have ever stayed! The staff was rude, the room looked and felt like it should have been rented by the hour. They gave my girlfriend a hard time when she asked for an extra towel. Oh yeah, I went out front for a cigarette one night and caught the guy at the front desk pleasing himself. AND they weren't inexpensive (could have gotten a much nicer place for the same amount a 100 meters away but my girlfriend had already paid for the week).

This place was like a sick joke (but on us): Toilets that did not work, no TP!, undersized sheets siding off of a well-worn mattresses, bathroom tiles decaying and stained and breaking. The blankets smelled dirty. 90's style TV, cable not working right.
The key system is/was old-time. Trouble is, we (stupidly, accidentally) opened the wrong room on our floor, Fortunately, no one was in the room, but what the hell, give me a break!, the same keys work for many rooms??!
Also: No safes for valuables, broken AC, they charge $400 if you loose the keys! (we didn't)!
One banana and one cup of coffee complimentary B-fast. One egg ($3) !
I could not wait to write this warning review.

Three good things about this hotel:
* A very nice city view deck off of the roof with Ocean views.
* Also the hotel is located close to the Atlantic facing beach,
* And, no one stole anything from us. (from our room, just from our wallets)

Room Tip: If you go, book third floor, windows facing away from the main street

Poor hotel for the money. Rooms were not clean. No water pressure in the bathroom. Plumbing problems. Had to ask for more toilet paper. The room key opened several guest rooms. ( I discovered this by chance when I opened the room that was 1 flight above ours ). The complimentary breakfast was a banana and 2 slices of toast. The staff could barely disguise their contempt for guests or their desire to rip us off. Would never recommend this place.

The hotel was conveniently located walking distance to a nice beach, a short drive to the touristy section of san juan/old san juan, and drivable distance to El Yunque Rain Forest. The room is modest but priced very reasonably and they definitely are interested in making your stay enjoyable. A little more attention to detail and the hotel could get a 5 on its own.

I stayed at Oceana for 3 nights and had a wonderful experience. The hotel is a decent price and about a 3 min walk to the beach. The staff was amazing. Had never been to San Juan and employee Yanira Bernard was so helpful with suggestions on places to eat and visit. Another employee named Manny Alfonso was just as helpful and great company. The stuff really made the experience great.

I went to San Juan for a quick get away with my girlfriend. We stayed at this place because it claimed it was close to the action and decently priced. The beach is right around the corner and that was awesome. However for four days we only received a pair of clean towels once. On the second day I managed to sneak our second and last pair of clean towels out of the closet. The lovely woman at the front desk apologized for the lack of towels and explained that the hotel was at capacity. One day we came back to our rooms and discovered that a rug has been placed In our bathroom, but the linen were never changed (the entire trip until we asked the woman for new sheets), the trash bags didn't have liners and the sad excuse for hangers in the closet an barely hold a jacket. BUT there is air conditioner, a small fridge and a small flat screen TV to pick up the slack. Two hotel employees, Manny and Yanira made our stay exceptional and fun. Without them I'm not sure if the hotel would have been worthy of going back. Also!! We took cabs everyday to town when we were a safe 15 min walk away! Location is Perfect!! Pool is small and not even in sunlights path. But the beach is less than a minute away.
