We arrived by taxi after 8 pm, rang the doorbell, and made our way in up a short flight of fairly steep steps. An utterly charming young woman was behind the front desk and pulled up our reservation. She told us that their system showed us booked into their nearby sister hotel, Acacia. Why this should be when I booked At Wind Chimes, I'll never know. She also said her hotel was booked full for the night.
But she walked us less than a block down a side street (which had a sign in Spanish on one of the posts warning of robberies in the area) and into Acacia, then slipped behind that front desk to check us in there since she'd greeted her on-break counterpart on the sidewalk on the way in. He came in to finish the process, and the two of them, plus a third man, took us to our room nearby. Once she saw we were happy with our room, she gave us each a hug and went on her way.
I have seen other reviews mention no one at the desk... Service like this could be why! I was quite impressed.

I loved staying at this hotel. While it is not beachfront, it is literally a two minute walk, one block away from the beach. It is a nice alternative to the mega-hotel/resort-type places to stay. The pool is well maintained - every morning we'd see the attendant cleaning it. Not to mention it was really refreshing to swim in. The sister hotel, Acacia, which is closer to the beach, is accessible for Wind Chimes guests as well.

I also want to recognize and acknowledge the customer service of the staff, who were always at the ready to accommodate. While everyone there - those working the desk, those maintaining the property, those cleaning our rooms - were always courteous, professional and friendly, with a warmth that is not found in many places, specifically one individual stands out. Claudio was so incredibly helpful, especially when we had issues with our room. We vacationed during the rainy season, and during one of the days' usual storms that was particularly heavy, the ceiling in our room started to leak. When we brought this to Claudio's attention, he immediately addressed our concerns and, as soon as it was possible, gave us another room. He understood the value of good-quality customer service. Our new room was quiet and comfortable, and we thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the stay. I only wished Claudio was working on the day we left so that I could have thanked him in person when we checked out.

My husband and I will most definitely be returning to this hotel.

Another great trip to San Juan - even tropical storm Gonzalo passing just north of the island didn't dampen our stay!

Wind Chimes is like staying in a quaint Spanish villa - like a home away from home. Even the resident cat, Popo, knows our room - same each stay. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Very accommodating too! They always, without asking, lug our heavy suitcases up the stairs upon arrival and down upon departure. That makes it much easier for two women traveling alone.

Hotel is quiet - not a party place. Good restaurants nearby. Bebo's for family friendly reasonably priced Puerto Rican and American cuisine, La Tasca De Yiyo for reasonably priced mexican food. Grocery store, convenience store and Walgreens both an easy walk away. If you are planning on buying coffee to take home - don't buy in the gift shops. Make your purchase at the grocery store. It's much cheaper and a better selection too.

Hotel is located in more of a residential neighborhood on the line between Condado and Ocean Park. There are many vacant homes nearby make the area seem unsafe. However, in the 3 years we have visited, I have never felt afraid or threatened in any way. There are lots of runners and dog walkers so there's usually lots of people around. Use caution as you would do in any city.

Beach is a couple minute walk down a quiet street. Lots of shade for those who need to avoid the sun but lots of room to tan, swim and play. They clean the beach of debris often but storms can deposit a lot of seaweed so sometimes beach does not appear as nice as at other times. Lots of families on the beach after work and on weekends. Be sure to try the ice cream from the "Ice Cream Man" who pushes his cart through several times a day. You will know he is around because he rings his bell. He usually offers two flavors - the Coco (coconut) is wonderful and refreshing - more like sorbe than ice cream. And, it's inexpensive - only $2!

Two art museums in Santurce are within walking distance. WE visited Museo De Arte De Puerto Rico. Only $6 per person admission. Some of their contemporary art is a little far fetched - a stretch to be considered art. Docents follow around very - too - closely and make you feel uncomfortable, Hard to enjoy the exhibits with someone watching you all the time.

If you're looking for night life, take a long walk or grab a taxi into Condado near the casinos or into Old San Juan. No nightlife close by.

Plan on spending about $21 plus tip each way for taxi to and from the airport - that's for two people and 4 suitcases. Taxi to Old San Juan costs about $16 each way. If you have LOTS of patience, you can use public transportation. Buses are suppose to run about every 15 minutes but it's usually more like 45 minutes to an hour or more. Fares are cheap at only 75 cents - 35 cents for 60+. Be sure to put up your arm and wave really big otherwise they will not stop! Rides are usually quite bumpy too!

Be sure to do the self-guided walking tour of Old San Juan, If you are looking for a good place for a nice dinner, The Parrot Club on Fortaleza offers great Latino cuisine with a great atmosphere.

This hotel was great. It was nice and cozy for an Island getaway. It almost reminded me of a bed and breakfast. It was just a short walk away from the beach. I liked that it felt more private than your standard Hilton or Double Tree. It was authentic and the staff was more than willing to help and give you advice.

We had a pretty bad experience at this place. The rooms have water damage, rusty breaking windows, one of our rooms had water leaking from various places, and smelled pretty bad. Hotel staff is ready to blame your nose because of the bad smell. The surrounding area looks unsafe, holes on the pavements, abandoned buildings, feels like someone is going to jump from the next corner to rob you. Lesson learned, book a chain hotel next time, at least you know what you'll be getting. There's no redeeming quality, and I'm pretty surprised there's any positive reviews at all. Maybe there are some decent rooms, but looks like they have very few, and we found out they were sold out when we asked for a room change. If you feel like gambling whether you'll get an acceptable room, you can try your chances. My recommendation is, go for the Hilton or Marriott.
