I was there middle of May 2013 and it was a great stay. Planned to stay here earlier this year but got moved to Acacia Boutique down the street (sister hotel--see my review there) and wanted to give this location a try for my business trip.
Why did I choose Wind Chimes? There are other brand name hotels, but they are quite old and outdated....rebranded from older hotels that went under, I suppose, so I just didn't want to pay a high rate for a so-so run down room. I figured I'd rather pay about half and stay at an older, smaller property.
I have to say that Wind Chimes is extremely clean. I know it's unrealistic to not expect a bit of dirt or bugs in the tropics, but I didn't see any in the hotel at all. I see more in my home in Texas and we keep it very clean.
The room was a standard (not economy, but not the largest) and there was plenty of room. AIr conditioner worked great. Location is near several smaller restaurants and walking distance from a few convenience stores. One is a pretty big 24 hr convenience store and just a block or two away.
Staff are friendly. There is parking for a few cars and this time when I reserved a spot they had one for me--so they do exist. Property requires a key to get in or be buzzed in. Felt very safe. (Full disclosure: One night I work to hear either firecrackers or several gun fire rounds nearby. Wasn't sure and didn't care so went back to sleep.)
I like the location because it's a short easy drive from the airport a few miles down a major back road. Then, close to the beach although I only went down once. I was doing work in Hato Rey, which is another easy drive down a major street three miles away. Was a very convenient location for me. It isn't going to be close to Carolina or Isla Verde if you are walking, the areas near the airport with other casinos, etc. but it works great for me.
Rented a car from Charley Car--my second time doing this--and it was easy. They pick you up from the airport and are located just off site. Since all the car rental places are off site there isn't any advantage to those and Charley Car is probably the least expensive. Located on the main road between Isla Verde and Condado so it was again convenient for me.
I'd stay at Wind Chimes again. Affordable, clean, friendly. No complaints!
