“First-timer to Puerto Rico/San Juan”
Reviewed January 24, 2009

This hotel is typical of what you would expect from a Sheraton. It is located in Old San Juan and near the cruise ports making it ideal for an overnight stay before a cruise or a first-timer to San Juan.

I did not plan to stay in my room or on-site for most of my trip. The restaurant was okay, with fantastic Pina Colada's! The Chicago Burger Company did not interest me since I live in Chicago and have been to the Chicago location. I did not visit the casino.

The concierge was most helpful with scheduling my excursions to the bio-bay, el Yunque and the beach. I was close to the forts of Old San Juan (walking distance or use the free shuttles), shopping at the outlets, and great restaurants - try Raices for delicious Puerto Rican food!

I only have two complaints...(1) the bell staff did not return to my room as promised to assist with a problem (although I probably should not have tipped him first). (2) The cleaning staff, although thorough with the cleaning, were quite loud in the hallways. One morning, the cleaning staff had half the hallway full of stuff (I guess they were organizing their carts). No problem, but just not outside guest room doors so you wake the guests who are sleeping.

  • Liked — location. concierge services. Pina Coladas!
  • Disliked — cleaning staff noise

I have never had such a horrible time! We booked through Travelocity so everything was pre-paid, but upon check-in on a Sun pm, they charged our travel card over $1200 and didn't bother to inform us of this little incidental - we found out on the following Fri pm when after dinner, our card was declined. Instead of apologizing or offering something to make up for the inconvenience, they seemed aggravated that we'd discovered the error! I had to do all the trouble-shooting to resolve the issue - spent a few hours doing this - and they still had to resend the fax to the card co. to get our funds released. The room service is slow and over-priced. The rooms are sub-par - bare basics and not exceptionally clean. The bedside table was not dusted once during the entire week. Our room was on the back of the property so there was constant traffic noise and our view was a parking garage. We were never greeted leaving or returning. The man at the tour information desk was utterly useless. The restaurants were pathetic with the same un-service a plenty. I would never, never stay at this hotel again. Upon check out, we were charged taxes that again were included with our booking. When I brought this up to the attendant he told me Travelocity was lying about it and he wouldn't take them off the bill. I hope to have this matter resolved eventually, but sadly that is beside the point and after the fact.

We stayed at the Sheraton Old San Juan hotel before our cruise in September. We arrived late due to plane delays but were warmly welcomed by staff to a very beautiful and clean hotel. There was a surprise porterage fee that the clerk explained is the local law but it was only about $12. We could easily have stayed up to party with musicians in the downstairs casino but we chose to snuggle up in our very comfortable bed. The room was huge but cozy with tasteful decor. It had an amazing view of some ruins and our cruise ship. It was only about a five minute easy walk to the dock so skip the taxi. We only wished the cruise had been as nice as this hotel. Also for those in the know..there is a Senor Frogs just behind the hotel which is fun for eating, shopping and a general good time.

This hotel is overpriced, tired, terrible service. Front desk can't be bothered to help either checking in, asking for restaurant choices, checking out, etc. Hotel is old, overpriced and just not worth the bother. Get a better hotel and take a cab to the pier. that's all this place is good for if you are about to embark on a cruise. And even then, I would never recommend.

There are four reasons to stay at the Sheraton in Old San Juan:

-It is clean and recently refurbished.

-You want to spend a day walking around Old San Juan – which is fun.

-There are some interesting local restaurants within walking distance.

-You are sailing from the cruise dock across the street. (But note that the Caribbean Princess and the some other large ships sometime sail from the Pan American pier, an $18.00 taxi ride though traffic to from the Sheraton.)

Otherwise, this is an expensive, rather unpleasant hotel with little to recommend it.

We had a “better” room with a partial water view. With an armoire instead of a closet and a small window with a permanent wooden shade, the room seemed small and crowded.

With the exception of the check in desk and a few couches, the entire lobby area has been turned over to a noisy casino. There is a hamburger restaurant on the ground floor and a typical hotel restaurant on the second floor. Given much better alternatives in the neighborhood, we saw no reason to eat at either.

Internet is $10/day. If you have a laptop, try Starbucks.

The dinky gym on floor 9 has two treadmills, a few trainers and a rickety universal. A rather nice compact pool area on the same floor is marred by blastingly loud music.

And let’s not forget the bellman who walked down our hallway at 7:30 am Sunday morning, loudly whistling Christmas carols and slamming doors as he picked up luggage.

We would not recommend this hotel.

We stayed at the Sheraton Old San Juan the night before embarking on a cruise. We had lost our bags en route and the front desk staff was very helpful (got us toiletries, contacted the airline). We are spg gold members and we were upgraded to a suite which was very nice considering the hotel was full.

The rooms are just average for a starwood property, but about what you would expect for the Sheraton brand. The hotel is older and does have the smell which is common to all old hotels on the water. The roof top pool is nice and was not too crowded. The location is really one of the major positives, right in the middle of old San Juan, close proximity to historic sites, shopping and the pier. Right in the middle of the action if you like going out at night. I am pretty sure you are paying for the location and not the inside of the hotel.

I would recommend this hotel was a single night stay before a flight or a cruise, but it is definitely not the kind of place for a vacation.

We arrived on Saturday around 430p. There were only a few people ahead of us in line, but I believe we arrived after the crowd. Our luggage was sent up to our room in the next elevator after us. We stayed one night prior to a Carnival cruise and chose this hotel only because we could walk our bags across to the port. You are only able to walk to the Carnival port, if I was taking another cruise line, I would stay elsewhere and cab it. The staff was friendly and as accomidating as they could be. Rooms were clean and ours didn't have a view, but than again we didn't pay for one. I feel they do upgrade you and are nicer when they are less crowded. It seems at times they don't have enough staff working to accomidate the crowds and a lot of tension comes from that. Also, they only have 2 elevators so it takes a lot of time to get to and from your room and we happened to be on the 9th floor, so taking the stars each time was not always an option. We had them hold our bags after we checked out and it did take about 30 minutes for them to bring them to us. The hotel was a mad house sunday from about 1030A and it still was when we left at 1230p. I'm use to paying alot for drinks, I live in Chicago, however the drinks in the Burger place were outrageous and most of what we had were the local beer.

  • Liked — Location to Carnival Cruise port
  • Disliked — crowds and very expensive since it's the only hotel in the area
