Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel
Ranked #19 of 47 Hotels in San Juan
Reviewed February 18, 2013

The Sheraton was the perfect location for our 5 night stay in Old San Juan Feb.1st,2013.It is located right on the promanade where the cruise ships dock.It is within walking distance of many great restaurant, shops ,and all the historic sites within the town.
The hotel itself is about what we expected ,clean and very attractive the employees were helpful but maintained a distance so we really were not bothered by there presence..I would reccomend this hotel .Was dissapointed with how small there roof top pool and deck area for lounging was thou.

This was our second trip to Puerto Rico is the last 6 months. We love it there, the first time we went we stayed at conrad condado plaza which we gave excellent reviews for but this time we wanted to stay in old san juan so we chose old san juan Sheraton. Upon check-in, we were given the option to upgrade to a suite for an extra $50 a night and were shown both rooms to choose from, while the suite was very very big and spacious, we did not need to extra room and decided to save the money because the regular room was perfect. We were on the 8th floor overlooking the bay and the cruise terminals. Only the 8th and 9th floors have little balconies where you can open the door and step out onto a small balcony so be sure to request these floors. The convenience of staying in old san juan is you can just walk out of the hotel and enjoy old san juan on foot or there is a free trolley that takes you all around old san juan. there are excellent restaurants within a few blocks and highly recommend aquaviva. We did eat at the chicago burger company at the hotel which was very good and they have an outdoor patio which we enjoyed bottles of wine in the evening, which you may be interested in as it is the only place to smoke at the hotel if you are a smoker. I always said that I would stay at the conrad condado again when we visited puerto rico, but after staying in old san juan, this will be the new place to stay and we will be taking another trip this year. One more thing to add, roof top pool area is small but I used it twice and was able to get a lounge chair both times and has very nice view, definately recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: ask for floors 8 and 9 for balcony and waterview

Stayed one night at this hotel recently. The location is absolutely outstanding, yes the pool is small, but its on the roof !! Room was nice, no issues from check in to valet pick up. Casino located in the lobby was fun. Being an SPG member , this hotel rates better than average. Did not eat at the hotel, can't comment on the food. My only complaint would be from checkin, no one informed us about wifi, codes or Access info. When asking front desk about this the next day, lady there wasn't very pleasant and never looked up as I was asking her questions. Would definitely stay here again, can't beat the location.

Dear Cervesa from Toronto,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Glad you enjoyed your stay with us although we regret the situation related to the wifi. You should have received a small card inside your key packet with all wifi instructions, as it should have been described upon check-in as well. Hope to welcome you back soon and thanks for being an SPG member.

My husband and I were taking a Carnival cruise on a Sunday, and we booked the Sheraton Old San Juan through Priceline to stay from the Thursday - Sunday beforehand. The room was clean and comfortable, we had a terrible view overlooking the manky parking lot next door, so we could never tell what the weather was when we woke up as the sun was blocked most of the time. We were also near the ice machine on our floor and apparently one of our neighbors required ice 4 times throughout the night so that was fun waking up to. By the second night we worked out to shut the interior bedroom door which kept the sound to a minimum.
When we checked in, we were given a two bedroom room and were told it was because we booked on a third party site, just beware of that. DO NOT bother going to Palio for the breakfast in the morning. If you do - avoid the buffet. It was absolutely disgusting and cost us $42 for two people. The eggs were slimy and had such a weird shape and consistency (picture small yellow slimy triangles). We didn't eat much (and I'm pregnant so that should say something). We ended up going to the nearby CVS, getting Nutrigrain bars and juice to have for breakfast, and we'd do larger lunches in the local restaurants. The other hotel restaurant is the Chicago Burger company.....we went there for dinner on our first night - my husband got a burger which he was happy with, I got a grilled chicken sandwich, and a few bites in, discovered that it wasn't cooked. We took a picture which I've attached. We complained and was told by the chef that it's supposed to be that way because it was from part of the chicken that was near the bone, didn't make much difference when I spent the rest of the evening vomiting, despite only eating a few bites of the sandwich.
Don't be fooled by the pool pictures either - it is a large puddle - not nearly enough room during the busy times. You're better taking a cab to Condado Beach (we went near the Marriott there) and laying out there for a day. The one day that we did spend part of in the pool area, we amused ourselves by looking at the disappointed faces of the new guests of the hotel coming up to check out the rooftop pool.

Room Tip: Ask for one not overlooking the parking lot, and hope that you're not near the floors Ice Machin...

If you coming here not expecting too much beyond a great location you will not be disappointed.
Come here with the expectation that is carried with the name Sheraton and you will.
The rooms are basic, boarding on very basic.
It was festival time and the hotel was very busy and we were told it was full, so we didn't mind the delayed check in.
It was good being right in the middle for the festival and we loved the town.
If it wasnt for that this review would be worse. The hotel is not worth the cash. There must be better value around.
The staff were good but we stretch that weekend.

Room Tip: outside of festival time find something better

Dear guest from Australia,
Thanks for sharing your experience here. We have many improvements scheduled this year that address your feedback. Old San Juan is pretty much festival - ambiance all year round 24 / 7. There are over 200 restaurants, pubs & attractions just steps from us. We are the only branded hotel in Old San Juan. Our location provides the benefit to put your "Cab" money towards better use. Hope you visit us again soon. I look forward to visiting Australia.

The entrance of the hotel is busy with employees, casino patrons, guests, etc... not impressive. Elevators need room key to operate and good luck on getting a green light, not a very good system. This is really an old building that they tried to keep it up. The room we stayed in was Ok not very spacious but a fair size for a King size bed room. It was an interior room, where the window over looks a dead-end courtyard. No views, gardens, ocean, etc.. all you see is the other windows from the other rooms. Musty-moldy smell when entering the room. Old and very worn out carpet. Outdated furniture. Bed sags in the middle and squeaky, but covers, pillows, sheets were clean. Nothing spectacular about the bathroom. Limited number of amenities (1 shampoo, lotion, conditioner, soap), the all-white towels were worn out and old, stained most of the time, but clean overall. What I mean by limited towels and amenities is that towels get wet fast because of age, and needed to use more towels. The Casino is pretty small and squeezed in the lobby of the hotel. The restaurants were over-priced, nothing spectacular about their menus. Overall the location that saves this hotel from getting the lowest reviews in my opinion. Pool on the roof is limited and not very big. 10-12 in the pool area guests and all the lounge chairs are taken. Fitness room is Ok overlooking the harbor, not bad for size and equipment.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms that overlooks the harbor, so you can enjoy the views.

Dear guest,
We appreciate your detailed feedback. Elevators access with guest room key is a very effective security measure since Old San Juan is the most visited city in the Caribbean with activity 24 / 7. Nonetheless, we do take note of all our guest feedback. This April, we will begin renovations of all our guest rooms. We look forward to meeting all our guest expectations and hope to see you back soon.
