“Had a very good stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

The Sheraton Old San Juan is located bang in front of the harbor so it is in a very highly trafficked area. The hotel mainly caters to a lot of the cruise crowd what with its proximity to the boats. The hotel does look and feel like it is in a different decade with the casino and the bright pastel colors decor.

Parking at the hotel is pricey at approx $22 a night. There is a lot behind the hotel (Dona Fela lot) where parking is a flat $4 from 6 pm to 6 am and you pay an additional 50c for every hour you are there. Our one day parking came out to be about $8.

Check in was smooth, the ships were leaving the day we arrived so there was no one at check in. We were checked in, recognized as a Platinum guest, given my amenities and upgraded to a one bedroom suite. Now while the hotel is fairly old, the one bedroom suites are pretty sweet in terms of the view. The room its self is average but more than comfortable and will meet all your needs but being able to stand at your window and have these massive cruise liners in your face is pretty awesome. The front desk even mentioned that the ships would be leaving later that night and what time so we could be in our room to watch them depart.

From what I can tell, there aren't that many of these rooms. There are only a few rooms actually facing the ships so if it is important to you, I suggest asking for it before hand or paying for the room. The club lounge sadly was closed due to renovation. They provide you with some match play coupons as well to use in the casino. Water and starbucks coffee is provided in the room. The pool is small but nice and on the rood and offers some nice views of the area.

The real pro of this hotel though is its location. You can walk just about anywhere in Old San Juan from this hotel. There are hundreds of dining options as well as bars nearby so you are not spoilt for choice. Yelp led us to some fantastic meals, or just wandering the cobble stoned alleyways will lead you to some great discoveries.

Other than the hotel being old, there really is not much to fault at this property. The staff were good, the location fantastic and the room more than comfortable with great views. Very much enjoyed my stat and ill definitely be back here the next time I am in town!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the harbor

Thanks for the detailed feedback. True valet parking is $22 (similar all hotels on island) but your tip for Dona Fela self parking (right behind hotel) is right on since offers the best value. We are glad you really enjoyed your stay and look forward to your next visit.

SYou never know what to expect of a Sharaton, some are so old fashioned. I thought this one was pretty good. Prices are high, though. Location is superb. I would recomend it if you can get a good price.

This hotel is a bit of a paradox to me. There were very nice things and a couple no-so-nice ones.

The Nice:

Our room on the 8th floor had a tiny balcony with a partial harbor view. The room was comfortable and nicely climate controlled. It was great to watch the cruise ships come in to the pier just across the road from us. A couple of nighttime thunderstorms were quite dramatic viewed through the french doors. The bed was extremely comfortable with one little caveat you will note below.

Housekeeping was good, but there were spots of mildew on grout/sealant in the shower.

The staff at the front desk were extremely professional.

We felt safe in this location and for exploring Old San Juan, it can't be beat.

The not-so-good

A ghastly, strong aroma of mold pervades the lobby. I would worry this smell might reach the lower guest room floors, too, but I never visited them. A similar but faint aroma of mold was detectable in one of my pillows. Ick. Fortunately, there were three other pillows without resident smells.

There are two elevators serving the entire hotel so they are very busy and the doors are set to close after a very brief open period. Most of the time it felt like the elevator was in a terrible hurry get moving again. The room card readers in the elevators often required several attempts to read our cars and grant access to the eighth floor.

While the desk staff was exemplary, I felt the door staff was not interested. No offer was made to assist with bags when we arrived, and in the four days we stayed we were never acknowledged or greeted in any way.

A final note: we experienced a power failure one morning from perhaps 4:00 to 9:00. The alarm clock failed because no battery backup was present, or if it was, the battery was dead. Either way I learned my lesson and set my own alarms for the final morning so I would not miss my early flight out.

Thank you for the detailed feedback. We regret not providing the proper greeting as well as the other situations pointed out. The strong smell in the lobby area might be associated to the fact that we began that evening the stripping / polishing of the lobby marble floors. This takes a few days and took place during the evening that week. Due to this, we also shut down the brand aromatic canisters in the lobby. Our elevator card readers can be tricky and we hope to soon replace them if the company is unable to rectify. Our guest comments play a key role on our operation and help us improve. We are glad you enjoyed this unique city and our location. Hope we can have you back soon.

What better of a greeting would you expect upon checking into your hotel at 1AM in the morning, after a tedious day of delayed flights and travel woes. Ahh....finally a friendly staff person.
The suite was ocean view, clean and very modern. Being in Old San Juan you might expect an older property, or slightly outdated environment. The upbeat staff, lobby casino, and many amenities close by...(like a CVS etc...) who would expect such vibrancy in an old, old setting. We have raved to friends about our stay and would stay again any time. It is close to the old downtown San Juan, close to pier #2 to get you to Bacardi's tour, and many other activities. This hotel has a restaurant and fantastic breakfast buffet and was really good and high quality. By the casino (larger than you might imagine in a hotel lobby....which by the way we won!) there is a burger and sandwich shop attached. Great roof top pool also.... If you choose this hotel, you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: There are town views, or ocean....we liked the ocean, and be clear, cruise ships pull into the piers...

I recently stayed at the Sheraton for 2 nights before my cruise and couldn't have picked a better hotel! The rooms are nice. I had the least expensive room category facing the interior garden. Safe in room. Beds comfortable. The service is excellent and the location is perfect. It is easy to walk everywhere in the Old San Juan Town. Close to stores, restaurants, Cafes, shopping etc. A beautiful town to see! Also 2 large forts in walking distance. The hotel has a roof top pool with a view. It was wonderful! They have 2 restaurants , one a Burger place and the other with a full menu and a wonderful terrace facing the sea. Excellent food with an excellent view! Great for Dinner. They held our luggage for a few hours before we were allowed to board the ship. I would go again to this hotel the next time I am in San Juan.

Room Tip: You only sleep in the room. There is so much to see in Old San Juan!

Located almost directly across the street from San Juan cruise terminal, ideal location. The in house restaurant was tasty but a little pricey.

The front desk staff were efficient and baggage handling was convenient. They stored our luggage securely as we toured Old San Juan, early arrival.

The hotel itself is a little dated but we'll kept. Our room was clean and very roomy. Television remotes are in need of replacing.

Rooftop pool has an awesome view over the harbor and any cruise ships that happen to be docked.

Overall a good hotel.

We appreciate your feedback and glad you enjoyed your stay. Most cruises dock across from us but a few dock at the Panamerican pier which is only like 2 miles away, so we do get many of those guest as well due to our location in the heart of Old San Juan. You don't really know Puerto Rico until you experience Old San Juan and we put you just steps from all the city has to offer.

We stayed at the Sheraton Old San Juan for one night after we got back from a 8 day cruise. I liked the location because it was just around the corner from Old San Juan restaurants and shopping areas as well as being across the street from the ship pier. Even though it is that close to all main attractions of Old San Juan once inside your room there is no noise from the street. The room was modern and very clean. the bathroom was very nice and clean as well. I would definetly stay there again if I am to return to San Juan. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. The only problem I had was that at night I heard noise in the hallway from late night gamblers from the casino downstairs, that interrupted my sleep and I also think this was because my room was located next to the elevator, other than that its very safe and nice there.
