The Condado Plaza Hilton
Ranked #22 of 48 Hotels in San Juan
Reviewed December 7, 2012

We stood for 8 nights in the Conrad. Mainly for business reasons with my wife. As a gold member of Hilton / Conrad we got a room with sea view. Perfect, impressive. Nice balcony. The hotel has two blocks; one at each side of the street (with a Floor 1) corridor. Only one of the four sides has see view. Try to get one at that side. The cleaning of the rooms is good, however sometimes personal forgets to resupply towels and other stuff. Sometimes the neighbor rooms are a bit noice. Own balcony. COffeemachine and frig in your room. The location at Ashford Avenue is perfect. Many shops and restaurants at walking distance. I like to recommend Conrad. It is quite price worth. For breakfast you can choose one of their restaurants. We strongly recommend Denny's. The hotel has mainly American tourists. The atmosphere is more American than Caribean.

Room Tip: Ask for seaside view. It is amazing.

I was sent to San Juan for work and thought I would arrive early and enjoy the city before work started. Being gold with Hilton, used points and chose to stay at the Conrad and I am so glad that I did. The hotel was very nice. The lobby was beautiful. The people were lovely and the rooms were fantastic. The best part was the glass shower in the bathroom. It made for some spicy times. During the day it was very relaxing to lay in the hammocks between the palm trees and listen to the ocean. There are 2 or three pools and there is an opening to an inlet beach where I was told that Columbus landed. It was a great stay. I'm ready to go back...

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the same tower that the lobby is in. Otherwise you have to go to the tower across...

Stayed 2 nights post cruise......contrary to other reviews, we were able to check in at 9 AM, although our rooms were not available until 1:30, we were able to make full use of the facilities including the pools and beach. Was pleasantly pleased with the facilities and the professional nature of the bellman and front desk. One downer was that our room phones were dead, and I told them about it after getting into the room. They did not fix them on Saturday (our check in) and when I went to the front desk on Sunday AM I was told that the "phone people don't work on Sunday" - so we had NO PHONES for the entire 2+ day visit! Front desk (Helen) was apologetic, but did not attempt to resolve the problem - I was livid that they would not even try to bring another phone up to the room, and her response was "well sir, I did apologize".

Overall the facilities were very nice - the Denny's Restaurant was always busy, but the service and food was excellent. Casino was nice, too. We would stay there again just because it is so close to the Condado nightlife and restaurants - not sure if rooms are worth $230-300, but we were staying with Hilton points so it was OK. Overall a pleasant experience except for the non working phones.

Stayed here for 1 night before a cruise. Hotel is very nice inside with different restaurants to eat in. Not far at all from the cruise terminal. Taxis are outside the hotel and it cost us $17 for 2 people and 4 suitcases to get to the terminal.

Beach is a short walk from the hotel. Only negative was the check in process. We stood in a queue for 25 minutes. There were lots of people checking in and it took them ages, however we got to the front and we were done in seconds.

Overall we were happy with the hotel and would stay again.

They have refurbished the old
Condado Plaza hotel. We stayed in the oceanfront building which was beautiful. They did a fantastic job redoing the rooms in this building. A friend staying in the lagoon tower said their room was not nice (maybe unrenovated) but I never saw it. Our room had a great bed and bathroom and was very large with a wonderful terrace. The main drawbacks are that the location is very convenient but the beach is almost nonexistent! It is all, dirty and right next to a busy road. There a rocks and stones in the water which is not the ocean but a small lagoon! Not what I want in a beach. Pools
We're nice but the furniture was very beat up! The food in the hotel restaurants with the exception of Pikayu was terrible with such slow service. The casino is large but also in serious need of refurbishing. Never met so many dealers with no personality. Front desk staff was wonderful but the bellman or doormen were mostly missing in action. If you are going for a beach then stay elsewhere.

For San Juan standards this place is nice to spend a few days. Our biggest complaint was the noise as others have mentioned. Our first night was awesome with the only sound of crashing waves outside our balcony. (With Diamond HHonors, they upgraded us to a breathtaking view of the ocean, $7 vouchers to use towards any of their 3 breakfast restaurants, and gave 2 bottles of water). The upgraded water view was by far the best perk as you saw nothing but water outside your room and could hear the crash of the waves. Back to the noise - on the second night, the hotel was near occupancy with several cruises leaving the next day. We could hear every door slam, shout, and our next-door neighbors yelling. This was amplified because they have those room to room doors and sound travels through the gaps easily.

Overall, a good stay in a great location. Before returning to the Condado, we would probably try staying at the Hilton Caribe next time we are in San Juan. We have stayed at the Doubletree, which is nice but the lagoons/ocean near the Conrad Condado and Caribe are gorgeous and worth the extra $.

Other tips / Special Mentions:

- Using the breakfast vouchers - use them at Denny's because they go further and we actually thought the food was better than the Caribe lounge.
- the city bus picks you up in front near the lagoon beach. For $0.75 it will take you to Old Town.
- for dinner, try some of the restaurants down the street instead of the overpriced Hilton restaurants
- the rooms were modern and spaciously optimized. Comfy sofa, very nice bathroom with walk-in glass shower, and coffeemaker w/ refridge. Small complaint with 19 inch TV, when 32 inches should be the industry standard.

Awesome place to stay as long as is not the busy summer season. I just had to stay a whole week to Sandy storm, the management was very gracious trying to accomodate us with a better fare and the location and beach are great, I have stayed on the summer months and its just too busy, another story.
