Go there and enjoy the gift shop - nice bar-related merchandise - but don't waste your time on the tour. Although it's free, you just see a fake miniature plant, a fake 50's office and a small museum. The plant itself is closed for visits (besides, from 2010 on they just manufacture the juice there - packaging is done in Florida), and you need to take a 30 second ride in a bus to get to the fake place.
Having visited Miller in Milwaukee and MillerCoors in Colorado, where you actually see the process area, Bacardi is disappointing.

You do not get to see much, and cannot even take pictures for half of it (not really any trade secrets on display) but worth the free admission + 2 free drinks... guess you can't complain if its free! I would recommend checking it out if you have time, but wouldn't prioritize it over anything in OId San Juan such as the forts...

free drinks and tour if you visit the rum plant! take a $0.50 ferry ride from pier 2. When you get off the ferry, walk to the yellow building on the right where shuttles wait to take you to the plant for $3. you get 2 free drinks and a tour of the plant.

My husband and I went to the Bacardi distillery, as was recommended. I am not a drinker, but enjoyed it very much. This tour is FREE. There is a nice gift shop on site as well. Upon arrival you are given 2 tickets for free drinks, alchohol and non. Then you ride a open air tour bus to the distillery. You learn about the history and the making of the rum. After the tour, which lasts approx. 45 min. to 1 hour. The bus then drops you back off to the beginning, but it front of their gift shop. Being that it was a FREE tour I found it very interesting and part of Puerto Rico's history. A little quick side trip.

It's great if you want to take a little inexpensive side trip from Old San Juan. The ferry is 50 cents, a taxi will pick you up and drive you over for $6/pp roundtrip, and you get an hour tour and 2 beverages. I definitely wouldn't spend the money to go on one of the 'booked tours' some places advertise for like $60. You can manage fine on your own and save a LOT of money.
