My husband and I went to the Bacardi distillery, as was recommended. I am not a drinker, but enjoyed it very much. This tour is FREE. There is a nice gift shop on site as well. Upon arrival you are given 2 tickets for free drinks, alchohol and non. Then you ride a open air tour bus to the distillery. You learn about the history and the making of the rum. After the tour, which lasts approx. 45 min. to 1 hour. The bus then drops you back off to the beginning, but it front of their gift shop. Being that it was a FREE tour I found it very interesting and part of Puerto Rico's history. A little quick side trip.

It's great if you want to take a little inexpensive side trip from Old San Juan. The ferry is 50 cents, a taxi will pick you up and drive you over for $6/pp roundtrip, and you get an hour tour and 2 beverages. I definitely wouldn't spend the money to go on one of the 'booked tours' some places advertise for like $60. You can manage fine on your own and save a LOT of money.

Took the 50 cent ferry from Old San Juan and then grabbed a cab. All cab fares are set prices which is great. The tour was free and when you arrive you get two tickets each for drinks. Very informational tour with some great history. Really enjoyed ourselves and it is a fun couple of hours spend.

Kind of a pretty weak tour. You only go to the visitors center, get some background on the company, see a replica of a few things, and an explanation of how rum is made. I expected to see more of the plant itself, but just drove by it on the tram, there was not tour of "the plant". They could have at least stopped in front and explained a little more. But the gift shop was very inexpensive, but really the same price as the duty free store at the airport, which is duty free even for US bound travelers. The ferry ride over was the best part of the trip to get there, which is out of the way (taxi to ferry, wait for ferry, then taxi across the bay to the factory . . . a lot of effort for a weak tour).

The tour was free. The only costs were the 50 cent ferry ride and the $3 per person cab to the plant. The drinks were good.
