“Relaxed and safe with excellent service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

We spent 4 nights here recently. We upgraded to a lagoon villa which was not really a villa but a large room with kitchen area and a very nice view over the Condado Lagoon. This Hilton is an older property, some would say venerable since it was the first Hilton outside the United States. Some parts of the hotel are clearly showing their age but the overall impression is of an updated resort property. One comes here to relax and unwind. The staff makes that goal easy with excellent, friendly service. Restaurant choices are limited on the property. However, there are really wonderful restaurants just a short walk across the bridge over the lagoon. This is a safe area with an unobtrusive police presence allowing one to walk around with no concern. We found that to be true throughout San Juan.

Room Tip: Opt for the ocean view rooms with balcony or the lagoon villas.

The Caribe Hilton has so much potential if they worked out a few issues. I will start with the positive first though. The location is great. It is in the middle of Old San Juan and Condado which is perfect for sightseeing and nightlife. The pool and beach area a very nice as well. All beaches in PR are public but the way the CH is located, it makes the beach area almost exclusive for guests. The rooms (although they need work) are spacious and comfortable. We had an ocean view with had an amazing view of Ft San Geronimo and Condado lagoon. The lobby is tastefully decorated and the front desk staff is very friendly. Restaurant staff is very friendly as well.
What I feel management should work on: I agree with the others in regards to the price. I find the resort fee outrageous given the room rate given there is not much you get with paying the extra fee. Food: very overpriced and the breakfast buffet could have been a little more diverse and with healthier options. Rooms: We felt was if our room was not clean enough. The toilet looked old and a broken light in the bathroom. The balcony looked as if it has not been mopped since it was built.
Overall, nice property but for the price and the extra charges, guests should get more for their experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main tower which has great views and have been recently renovated.

The hotel is very nice. Pool area is beautiful. If you are there on business and trying to eat a reasonably priced, but good meal, be careful. You can get a burger at the bar or in your room that is kind of edible. You can however go to Morton's Steak House and get an incredible Burger for $1 more. I am a creature of habit though. I stay on property about 6+ times a year.

Room Tip: Always request an upgrade. Most hotels will offer it free...IF you ask

This is a vast maze like hotel, where it is easy to get lost and you may well have a ten or fifteen minute hike to your room. The open air reception looks inviting and the pool area is pleasant, but on closer inspection it's not very clean and a bit tired.

Our room was also particularly tired with a view of a building site.

The on site restaurants were all very overpriced, we ate at the cheapest and the meal was very poor for the price paid.

The checking on process was painful with no proper directions to our room given.

The pool had broken tiles and the private beach was rather small.

We were transferring to a cruise ship and the hotel managed to loose two suitcases belonging to our party, so two friends had no clothes for a 14 night cruise and spent the first four days trying to locate and get the cases sent to the next cruise stop.

The property of this hotel is very nice (grounds, pool, etc), however it's very over-priced. And BEWARE -- there's a $35 per day "Resort Fee" (read: ripoff fee) that you don't find out about until you arrive and at that point you're stuck into paying it. They also don't tell you about the $20 per day parking fee until you arrive. All of a sudden you're paying $55 a night more than you thought you planned...good thing I was there on business or else I'd be broke.

The food on premises is also very expensive and will cost you an arm and a leg. The only reasonably priced place in the area is a Subway down the street, which has very long lines for breakfast, with everyone trying to avoid the $12 fee for a bagel and coffee at the hotel's breakfast.

Also, this hotel is not in the best area. It's next to an abandoned building surrounded by barbed wire and down the street is a park where homeless people life (and one chased me away when I tried to use the beach). My room was too close to the elevator you could hear it through the walls all night long. Be careful which room they put you in -- it could make or break your sleep.

Room Tip: Make sure you request a room that is not near the elevator and is a higher floor. Lower floors tend...

I'll start by saying I tend to prefer non-chain, smaller hotels and after perusing the website, my expectations for our stay weren't high. However; our room, the property, the food, and the service were all just fine. While the property is big, there are enough separated areas that you don't feel totally overwhelmed but hoards of people. And the peninsula on which the hotel is set provides great water views up to 270 deg.
You won't get the speedy service-to-your-beach-chair drink runners that you do at a luxury hotel, but someone did amble by every once in a while and the bar is never far. We only ate lunch from the hotel but they had decent options for every taste (veggie wrap for me). Our room in the tower (which was recommended) had a great view, upgraded large bathroom, and balcony, which seemed great for our standard rate.

Room Tip: Ask that you don't overlook the Aviary - the birds will wake you up before the sun!

A large hiustoric "set" of hotel buildings. Pools and staff excellent..."beach" not so much. Enjoyed the people and the energy of the property. Please explore area outside of official tourist area. island has a proud and extensive history
