Be careful when considering staying here for your San Juan visit. As others have pointed out the Caribe is in an isolated location which to the hotel's favor leaves guests with only hotel property dining and drinking options along with and their very high prices.

This visit I tried the newer "Villas". The king was a small room with a crampt bathroom. And with the Caribe having no nearby shops, eateries or really anything else the kitchen is pointless. Don't let the website advertising hype fool you: the Villas are just another building with different style rooms from the main hotel..

There are much better options in San Juan.

We stayed at the Caribe Hilton after our 7 day cruise with Carnival. The hotel had all the amenities a family needs including a Starbucks in the lobby. The pool area was a bit over crowded but the man made beach is perfect for watching your kids as they do water sports/activities. There's loads of things to do while at the hotel. For a cheap taxi ride you find yourself in the center of Old San Juan where you can shop, and dine at any number of restaurants or tourist shops.

The hotel was clean and the rooms were a nice size. Room service is way over priced. The bar restaurants near the pool have basic chicken fingers and fries; again over priced.

The check out was painful since they held money on two cards even when I paid cash at check out.

Overall, the resort grounds make up for any short comings of the staff.

My family of three met up with my parents and siblings at the Caribe. The place has a beautiful beach and pool plus plenty of amenities for the family. It even has a selection of restaurants ($20.00 a person) to choose from. However, the prices are typical resort level (sky high) and the service is non-existent. Breakfast is included but only up to $21.00 and it adds up quick (i.e. tea, coffee are extra, plus anything served heated eggs, pancakes etc). ALSO THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS OCEAN FRONT ROOM AT THIS HOTEL SO SAVE YOUR MONEY. We asked for 4 ocean front rooms and none of us had a clear view even though we were all in different towers at different levels. I have listed the issues we had:

1. room service orders are always wrong
2. trays left to accumulate over days in hallway (3 at one time even though we called)
3. dead roaches left laying around
4. no pool/beach side service (that means walk up to bar to order it and then walk back to pick it up when its ready)
5. ac unit on a patio door sensor and not working properly
6. elevator in our tower broken
7. phone not working, bulbs out, dirty shower, tv reception bad in room

We actually got tired of reporting things to the front desk and in the end we were comped a $40 room service charge for being without ac for two days. We are not the type to stay at such large chains but this was not our idea and we were hoping for the best. I will say Eric Ponce (head concierge) was a great help with booking the overpriced tours the Hilton offers. He even recommended some tasty places to eat outside the hotel. If you're on a budget or want service avoid this place. Otherwise the kids will enjoy themselves.

Room Tip: The ocean front rooms have limited views so decide whether its worth the higher fee. If your ac unit acts up switch rooms immediately do not let them send engineer to "repair" it.

My husband and I travel a lot, and I very rarely leave a negative review. i am a pretty forgiving vacationer. However, I would not recommend staying at the Caribe Hilton. To keep everything fair - I've listed out some of the pros first:

1. Great pools, nice landscaping, there is a smaller sandy beach that would be good for young kids. Also, there is an outdoor area with peacocks, coy fish, swans, ect. My daughter loved this.

2. The bed was nice and the bathroom was spacious.

3. There were a number of nice restaurants on the property.

4. Rooms were clean.

The cons:
1. They overbooked the hotel the week we were staying there and the situation was poorly managed. In fact, I would go as far to say that it was a bit shady. My husband and I did not know until we walked into our room and noticed that our bed was a fold out couch that we had been downgraded. In the Hilton's defense - we ended up getting a credit for our first nights stay - but keep in mind - this didn't happen until AFTER we said something, and even then it was an argument.

2. VERY pricey - E.g. $22 for a 10 in pizza, or $15 for a hamburger. or $20 for a 'warm' continential breakfast, etc. And, you are a captive audience there - the only food walking distance really is subway. Everything else you have to take a taxi to get there.

3. Rooms weren't great. Broad interpretation of the description 'balcony' and 'ocean view'...Our balcony was about 2 ft out. And - our 'ocean view' was really a view of the lagoon, which is really isn't a view at all. Regardless, we weren't impressed. Also, lights wouldn't work, fan wasn't working, and the internet connection wouldn't work.

4. Poor/inconsisent service at times. E.g., waited about 45 min to eat at one of the restaurants (we were already seated) and waited about 20 min for 2 drinks in the lobby. (service in pool area was always nice).

5. !Poor location in San Juan! - unless you are renting a car - stay downtown in Old San Juan. Or around Isla Verde. The Caribe is isolated and everything is at least a $10 taxi. We drove around our last day in San Juan and decided we had picked wrong. Initally - we picked Caribe because we have a 2 yr old. We liked the idea of the small beach she could play on, the pools, the playground on the property, etc. In reality, she didn't care, and if we had at least stayed in old san jaun - it would have been easier to explore in the evenings.

Other comments:
- PR was great. Go to old San Juan at night. Visit the forts. Go to the rainforest, it was worth the drive.Eat at Raices.
- Don't rent at the Hertz on site at the hotel. Go to the Allied car rental across the street. It's half as much. Also, they will give you a free shuttle to the airport if you drop the car off at the airport location.

Hope this helps someone! If you are already staying there, you will be fine. It's not an awful hotel. i just wouldn't stay there again and feel there are probably a number of better options.

Stayed here in april 2011, 3 days before a cruise and three days after. The price is fairly high, and i came to learn that Puerto Rico hotels charge a resort fee on top of the room rate. With everything in, the room we thought was going to be $199.00 turned out to be closer to $300.00 per night. The room was decent enough nothing great nothing bad. As many of the reviews have stated, we did not have house keeping on our first day. I called the front desk a cpl of times. I think you have to be very aggressive and demand that your room be cleaned.
The restaurants were extremely expensive, although the food at the Lemongrass was exceptional. The rest of the restaurants were very basic. Good fitness facilities. The spa seamed more like an old hospital then a spa, very institutional, not a relaxing feel at all.

The Pool and beach areas however were amazing. If you are coming for a sunny vacation, this can more than make up for some of the other issues we had with the hotel. Great beach and swimming area. Pool was crystal clean with los of seating and lounge chairs available.
