San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino
Ranked #10 of 48 Hotels in San Juan
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 7, 2013

I recently stayed there in late February and early March. Being originally from Puerto Rico but living in mainland US, I had no doubt that this hotel has a prime location in one of San Juan's best areas which is Condado. It is walking distance to nice restaurants, bars and close to key attractions. Also the staff is friendly and helpful. At night the lobby bar has great ambience with live music certain days and DJs playing lively music on others. The curteous, friendly bartenders, in particular Jennifer and Yadira, prepare delicious drinks that are delivered always with a beautiful smile. These two are great ambassadors of this gorgeous little island.

Overall, the hotel is clean, has access to the beach, a good sized pool and comfortable rooms. Their gym could be more spacious for the size of the hotel, but I highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Room 708 has good views of beach and pool area.

I had ask for assistance from the desk manager concerning a safety issue with water on the tennis courts. The desk manager response was hostile and rude. I immediately reported this icident to the general manager who took my concerns seriously and rectified the issues completely. I would highly recommend staying at this location based on the excellent customer relations with the general manager.

My husband and I went to San Juan for five nights this February to escape the snow in the Midwest. The Marriott was perfect for us.

The oceanfront balcony (well worth the extra expense) was good size and since it faced north, it was always in the shade...which after a day in the sun, we needed. It was a great place to relax, watch the boogie boarders, and have a glass of wine in the late afternoon. The room, itself, wasn't large, but it was well-organized and had a refrigerator (not a full mini-bar which is so expensive to use).

The hotel seemed very well managed and most of the staff were very friendly and efficient. Upon check-in, we were given a folder containing a list of near-by "walkable" restaurants (Tijuanas (Mexican) and Via Apia (Italian) were very good), a list of several restaurants in Old San Juan, and some helpful maps.

Taxi's were easy to obtain (usually a $16 charge to Old San Juan) and it was easy to find one down by the Pier for the return trip. In my opinion, it was definitely too far to walk.

All in all, the Condado neighborhood was perfect for us - beach, hotels, and many restaurants, and the San Juan Marriott was a place we'd love to visit again.

LOCATION: In Condodo on Ashford Avenue and a very nice stretch of beach. The La Concha Renaissance Resort is just two blocks away but they don’t have balconies, small pool and the beach is small and not as nice as Stellaris. The Di Zucchero restaurant across the street is a great place for an alternate breakfast rather than at the hotel. One block down is a Walgreen that sells everything from liquor to aspirin. There are also a couple of tobacco and liquor stores with in the area. One note, there are homeless people peddling in the area and some sit right out side of Walgreen and at the bus stop. All though the area is fairly safe, you should be very cautious. Don’t walk the beach at night.

ATMOSPHERE: Bellman were prompt and courteous and willing to give directions. The front desk personnel were attentive, smiled and were very helpful. Check-in was quick and efficient. The lobby is small, open and has a coffee/pastry bar. The casino is right off to the right and is of moderate size. Spa is on the ground floor.

TOWER: There are two towers. Main & Cabana. The main tower has west, east & ocean front rooms all with balconies. If most rooms were the same, other than suites & corner rooms, I would not want to stay in this tower. West facing rooms in the main tower have direct afternoon sun and would be hot in the rooms and balconies. These rooms have partial ocean and pool views. We stayed in the Cabana Tower and enjoyed this location. The tower is only about four floors versus maybe fifteen in the main tower. The view is out over the pool area with a partial ocean view.

ROOMS: Our cabana tower room was not small at all. It was an average size of most resort hotel rooms and more than adequate space. We had a king size bed, coffee area, double closet, safe, dresser with flat screen TV, desk and couch with coffee table sitting area. The balcony was a good size with two chairs and table. Our room had a perfect view.

ROOM SERVICE: We ordered dinner three times. Each time the service was prompt, food was very good. Churrasco steak was perfect $26.00. Primo Cerveshi $9.00. Key Lime Pie $6.00. Caesar Salad $11.00. Empanadas $8.00. Bowl of Sancocho stew $8.00. There is a delivery charge of $2.50 plus 17% tax and city tax and state tax. We did not eat at the restaurant for breakfast or dinner.

POOL: There are two pool areas. One is 2-3 feet and the other is about 4 feet. There are columns of waterfalls that separate the two pools. The deeper one has a swim up bar. The smaller has a slide with lifeguard for children. The only negative for us is even though the pool area was lush, tropical and visually beautiful, the resort is geared for family and kids. So there were a lot of kids. There are also kids activities like bingo etc.

FOOD COST: The cost of pool food is very expensive. We had a hamburger and sandwich (no salads can be ordered pool side) and the total charge was $28.68. We ordered pool side drinks once Mojito $11.00 and Passion Fruit cocktail $13.00 plus taxes so $25.68 for both drinks. Food and drinks at the resort are expensive.

Room Tip: The Cabana rooms have great views and are cooler.

I went on a girl's trip to Puerto Rico and just got back home to AZ on Monday, March 4th. This hotel is really, really nice with great rooms, not huge, but more than comfortable for 3 girls in one room. We got a fabulous ocean view and the weather was awesome to boot! The staff could not be nicer or more professional than what we encountered at every level..they are centrally located in the beautiful Condado district, with tons of shopping and restaurants close by...we got the assistance and advice we needed when we needed it and consequently had a great time...the hotel has a wonderful DJ on Friday nights and fabulous live bands on Sat and Sun nights...bot did we have a great time...24 hr Walgreens that has a mini market is just a short walk away--almost next door!!! Loved it and would go back again and again to this wonderful Marriott!

The location and service are top notch, check-in was easy, staff friendly. However the rooms are very small and the bathroom is so tiny, you cannot even open the door the whole way. This hotel us very old and has a musty smell, hotel definitely needs a makeover, it reminded me over Atlantic City circa 1989. So if you are looking for friendly staff, convenient location, this is the place for you. If you are looking fur luxury accommodations, this is NoT the place to stay. As a matter if fact we lost power 4 times since I gave been here (3 days).

Dear Courtneyesunshine

Thank you so much for your recent feedback regarding your stay with us. We truly appreciate the positive comments regarding the property location and the service of our associates.

I apologize that your room was not to your satisfaction and that you experienced a musty smell. We have, on occasion in the past, had rooms that were musty reported to us and we have been able to remedy this so if you would like to let me know offline what room you stayed in, I would appreciate it. This is largely due to being an oceanfront property but it is easily rectified once detected.

I am also sorry that we lost power during your stay. Situations like that remind us that we are definitely located on an Island, however our back up generators soon activate after a power outage allowing us to carry on as usual.

Courtneyesunshine, if I can ever be of assistance in your travel plans back to Puerto Rico in the future, please contact me at julian.cable-treadwell@marriotthotels.com or at 787 289 5036.
