“Nice hotel - corporate feel with leisure options!”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

We went to the Marriott San Juan for a quick 5 day get-a-away from the cold New York weather. This is what I thought of the property overall:

ROOMS: The rooms were small with a small balcony. They were updated but definitely showed mileage. Bed was excellent. Bathroom was tight and nothing special. The rooms were clean. Overall, average room but comfortable and clean.

SERVICE: I cannot say enough here. Every member of the staff from the front desk, maids, waiters, casino staff, restaurants - were extremely nice and helpful. Of all the hotels that I have visited, this could possibly be one of the most impressive staffs that I have encountered. I cannot praise them enough. They truly made the stay excellent.

POOL: The pool area has a bit to be desired. The two tier pool featured a swim-up bar. The pool size is a bit smaller. The lounge chair areas are very shaded by the hotel buildings and palm trees. Finding a location with sun all day is a challenge and requires you to move around alot. Pool area was ok.

BEACH: Not known for their beach. The space is plentiful for lounge chairs. The waters are rough and there are some rocks.

CASINO: A nice casino happy to take your money!! Table games were typical with low minimums of $ 5 for blackjack and craps. Overall, the rules are pretty much the same with some minor differences on blackjack. Comp credits will be applied to your food and beverage bill - they cannot apply to room charges. Slot machines are updated and plentiful. Beverage service is free and attentive.

PROPERTY OVERALL: The property is in need of some updates and rehab. It is showing some mileage overall. If you are super attentive to detail, you will notice some of these issues. The service and overall experience will allow you to overlook these minor issues. The hotel is more corporate than leisure, but is definitely perfect for a quick get-away. The hotel is conveniently located on the beach with access to shopping and restaurants. The food on the hotel property is excellent for breakfast, lunch and dinner - definitely visit LA VISTA for any meal as you will not be disappointed. Price for food is high, but quality is there! The service is second to none overall. This is a good choice for those that demand Marriott quality and good stay overall.

Dear LJD2076

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your recent experience at our property. It is greatly appreciated and I enjoyed reading your comments relating to our service and food quality to our associates in our Operations Meeting recently. As you can imagine, they were all extremely proud.

I also thank you for your candor when describing our facilities. There is very little we can do about our pool area and we thank our customers for moving around the pool in order to catch the sun.

We have received many positive reports on our service and cleanliness but do believe, with you, that our room product, although still very bright and comfortable, does need a little Tender Loving Care, so we will be investing in a room renovation in the 3rd quarter of 2013 so I hope that we can welcome you back after this has taken place.

Once again, thank you so much for your feedback and if I can be of any assistance in the future, please don't hesitate in contacting me via email at julian.cable-treadwell@marriotthotels.com or at 787 289 5036.

My husband, 7 year old daughter and I just got back from a week long visit. My husband and I have been here several times before, but this was the first time we brought our daughter. As expected she had a great time! By the second day there, staff recognizes you, remembering what you had for breakfast the day before, or where you have come from. The room was always clean, staff very accomodating and very friendly. The poolside staff also very attentive and welcoming. I wouldn't have changed one thing!

Room Tip: We always book the ocean view, it's a little more money, but money well spent!!

We stayed here three nights. The location is perfect if you don't want to stay in Old San Juan. Ashford Ave has many bars, restaurants and shops with a neighborhood feel. Saw a multitude of cops (all in decent shape, unlike like here in the States) so the area felt really safe.

The hotel itself, is really nice. The grounds, lobby and first level are very well maintained and beautiful. Also a lil coffee shop on site with food and drinks comparable to Starbucks (across the street) The rooms appeared older than the lobby, but weren't bad at all. The beds in the double rooms are fulls, so if you're looking for queens, you'll have to look elsewhere.

We had a partial ocean view in the tower. We were on the 15th floor and had a great view. Our friends stayed in the other building (the hotel is a tower and another structure) on the 5th floor and their partial ocean view was straight on with the beach, but the resort's trees blocked the majority of the view. As a tip, I'd ask for a room in the tower.

The tower does shade the beach as times, but the beach was fine. Beach service was also great, and their was plenty chairs and towels. Pool was in the shade most of the day. Pool was very messy after 3-4pm (lot of trash, old food laying around)

We didn't eat breakfast on site (try Pinky's - down the street. it's amazing) or lunch (go to Buns - across the street) and lost money at the Casino (free match play - use it!)

The hotel was expensive, but was great. We had 'buy 2, get 1 night free', so I'm not sure if the regular rates were increased to offset the free night, but it was pricy. We also went in Jan, so prices could just be high due to the season.

The hotel also has an airline online check-in computer, so if you're flying out without a bag, use it and skip the counter at the airport.

The only gripe I have is the 'free' wifi included in the resort fee. We had to 'sign up' everytime we used it, and it was cumbersome. Maybe it was user error, but I had trouble with it every time I wanted to get on the internet.

Full disclosure - I'd give the hotel a 4.5, but can't give half stars.

We recently stayed at the hotel from January 18-21. The hotel itself was at capacity but you would never have known it from the way the staff kept every thing moving. We had a room that faced both the pool and beach (807 to be exact). The rooms are comfortable and clean and you can't beat the view. The manager of the hotel and front desk staff were very accommodating and went above and beyond to ensure that we had a great experience. The pools were lovely - my kids loved the water slide and the beach was very clean -- and the staff was there to get you a chair or umbrella at a moment's notice. The hotel even gives balls, sand toys, board games, etc. that you can use - this is great! We look forward to another stay at the hotel.

We stayed based on reviews here in the forum and I was very disappointed. The room was basically dirty and the surrounds and amenities in the room were run down or broken for the most part. While the staff worked hard they seemed distant and somewhat depressed. Throughout the hotel there were broken fixtures and items in need of repair which was unattractive.

The spa was not first rate by any means. The casino was tiny and more like a parlor than a casino; only two poker tables and about seven black jack tables.

I truly felt this was a disappointment.

We stayed here two nights before taking a cruise out of San Juan. The Location is in a hotel/neighborhood area which makes it feel safe, quiet and very vacation oriented. It is not near Old San Juan or other major attractions which require cabs or a car to reach. The pool area has a resort feel to it with swim up bar, several levels and lots of seating areas. The hotel, being tall, shades this area during some parts of the day and is a bit imposing. Otherwise, the beach is right there too. Rooms were nice, but just average. Hotel is a older, but still well furnished andis kept up. Just remember, this is a Marriott Hotel and not a true Carribean "Resort" as some may assume. Everything costs including breakfast and internet. This is a hotel with a resort look and feel outside. The casino is attached which is nice if you want to try your luck. Lots of restaurants nearby to walk to. The staff were great and very helpful and I would stay here again for a San Juan visit. This has a DB-Trips Approval so I don't think you will be disapointed, but I'm sure there are a few locations nearby that are newer, nicer and even better. So stay here or keep looking, if the price is right, the Marriott should satisfy most needs. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Go as high as they will get you for an ocean view.

The hotel is very well located in a area with plenty of restaurants and shops. On the week-ends it's very hard to sleep as the bars play their music full blast until the wee hours. The beach is nice but in order to face the sun you have to face the hotel, and by 5 o'clock the pool area is in the shade. The food at the beach grill was mediocre, my salade nicoise was a tossed salad with three tiny chunks of tuna, the cheeseburger which was ordered medium came very well done and tasteless so we did not eat at the other restaurants on site fearing the same. Otherwise the staff is friendly and helpful and seems like the hotel was recently renovated. We are big fans of Marriott and also own several Marriott timeshares.
