“Nice but crowded”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2013

We spent the week before New Year's at this hotel. Family of 4, two adjoining rooms. Pluses: staff, nice pool, excellent location in San Juan, clean and efficient, small casino (if you like to gamble) and you are in San Juan (which is great). Minuses: crowded, food inside hotel was just ok and expensive, beach waves are rough and no lifeguard, room on lower floor is noisy (you can hear the lobby band/music in your room until late in the night).

We wanted to get some guaranteed good weather in a fun place and decent hotel for the week. Mission accomplished. The kids (8 and 12) had a lot of fun and met other kids a the hotel. Bottom line is that this is a crowded week WHEREVER you travel and there is the inevitable contest for good chairs/location at the pool and beach.

Staff was extremely nice and accommodating. I requested adjoining rooms when I booked and they delivered. The location is great -- there are tons of restaurants within very close walking distance and it's fun to go out at night for dinner and also for lunch (Ali Baba, Buns right across the street).

Beach waves are very rough - I would not let my kids go into the water without me next to them, unless they were very close to the sand. They did have a great time in the water when we went in, but you do have to pay attention and kids should be able to swim. No lifeguards -- just a guy who blows a whistle every hour or so to remind people not to go to close to the rocks. If gentle waves are important to you, there are much better places to go in SJ.

Pool nice with a water slide - not huge, but a good pool.

PR is a lot of fun - we went ziplining, snuba and hung out in Old San Juan. There are always activities to do if you don't feel like hanging out at the hotel.

Room Tip: Get a higher floor room if you don't want to hear the music from the lobby at night. If you nee...

We just stayed at the Marriott this Xmas eve and Milady Torres took great care of us. Our flight didn't get in until late and we checked in almost at midnight. Milady was attentive to our needs and provided a upgrade to ocean front since was available! The room was clean and just perfect for us to spend Xmas morning together. The view was gorgeous and serene.

Everyone at the hotel was friendly and helpful to find things to do in Puerto Rico on Xmas day. Casino in the hotel also helped to pass some time. Didn't get to use the pool, but looked nice! Great that we could use the pool and beaches and shower in gym after checking out if wanted.

Salsa dancing in club area next to lobby and great bar area too was fun. The location of the hotel was convenient with short cab rides anywhere. Very pricey during the Xmas holidays but it was the case all over the island.

We'd stay here again easily!

We stayed here twice in December. Both times we had a balcony which overlooked the beach. Taxi from the airport is $19, plus $1 a bag for luggage. The rooms are fairly large. Our room included bathrobes and slippers. The room has a safe. The pool is not huge, but has an area set aside for children and a slide. We stayed here a few years ago and the beach was great. The front desk, however, told us that Hurricane Sandy took a large amount of sand from the beach. The water is pretty rough so I would swim with caution, but the beach had a number of umbrellas and chairs with bar service. There are a number of restaurants in the area. The hotel staff was very friendly, but keep in mind that check in is 4 p.m. We came off a cruise ship around 9:30 a.m. and did not get our room until 3:00 p.m. The staff encouraged us to use the pool and beach in the interim and let us check out towels even though we were not checked in.

Room Tip: Ask for ocean front room and/or for a balcony room. The balconies have 2 chairs and a small table...

We stayed at the San Juan Marriott Hotel for the last 3 days. We had an ocean front room with two double beds costing $423/night with breakfast buffet included. I made the reservation on BookIt.com and it was paid in full over two months ago. Every time we ate breakfast the server reassured me that we would not be charged. When we went to check out this morning there was a charge for $88 for every breakfast. When I pointed out the error he took the charges off. When I arrived at home to check my credit card activity there were >$2000 of additional charges! I called immediately and told that it must have been a "mistake" and would refund the money within a week.
Positives: Room was clean, bed was amazingly comfortable.
Negatives: Do NOT order from the Noodle Bar in the casino. Overpriced and horrible food.
Trip Suggestions: Bring a sweater, the hotel is freezing. Go to La Plazita for dinner (Tasca El Pescador). You MUST go to El Morro on Sunday to fly kites (buy at Walgreeens first) This was a highlight of our vacation. Try Piraguas (icey) and Helado de Coco (coconut ice-cream) from street vendors in Old San Juan. You can take the bus to Old San Juan for $0.75 instead of $20/cab ride.

This hotel was great!! The beach was beautiful an the staff super-friendly. I didn't have a very large room but it was still very comfortable. The bar was great as well in the hotel. My only concern was how slow food was for lunch. Then again, I'm a New Yorker so the slow pace was probably more my fault. I would be happy staying here again any time!

I recently stayed at the Marriott San Juan Resort & Stellaris Casino over Christmas vacation, and I found it to be a very comfortable visit. Here is a general overview of what to expect starting with the surrounding location and finishing with the hotel itself.

The location: The hotel is on Ashford Ave. which is full of little restaurants and some stores. It also has the oft-mentioned Walgreen almost right across the street, which is helpful. The restaurants are hit and miss. We went to a couple immediately outside the hotel, and found the service was pretty slow, and the food, mediocre. Some of these restaurants are Italian, which is fine to a degree, but if you are looking for authentic Puerto Rican food, it doesn't make sense. I highly recommend Orozco's Restaurant for good Puerto Rican meals, and it's just a block or two away from the hotel. For some reason, it isn't included on the list of Marriott recommended restaurants in the surrounding area, maybe because it is pretty small - but great food at a decent price with good service! I also recommend Ummo, an Argentinian Steakhouse down the street, for a good steak dinner. This is where we went for Christmas Eve. It has a nice, modern vibe, good wine, and good service.

The beach itself is a city beach, so it has a rough surf. You can still get in up to your waist and jump around in the on-coming waves. They will push you around.

As for live music - I noticed a couple of clubs in walking distance, but seemingly no activity or dancing. This could be because it was Christmas.

The Hotel: It is a Marriott so you can expect a comfortable bed, nice sized and clean bathroom, and a generally comfortable atmosphere. Also, all the staff were all wonderfully nice and good at answering all our questions.

We didn't really eat at the Marriott, of course, because the prices are typical expensive, even ridiculous, hotel prices. However, we did allow ourselves to have a couple of drinks and appetizers at the Red Coral Lounge (the bar in the lobby), and the food and drinks were good there. Also, the restaurant open for dinner on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were serving a buffet style dinner only, and you couldn't order off menu, so that also pushed us to look outside. The buffets those nights were about $43/per person.

We had an ocean view room, and it was a gorgeous view, of course. The city view room is also lovely, though, so don't fret if you can't get the ocean view. The city view is cosmopolitan but more interesting to look at.

In the lobby they had some live music on Sunday night (the day we arrived), but in general the good and dance-able live music occurs on Friday and Saturday nights, we were told. Also, there is a casino in the lobby, which mostly has slot machines, but does have a few table games. We didn't really go for the gambling, so I'm not sure how good of a casino it was.

The only downside that we didn't expect is that check-in really won't have a room available until 4pm (the official check-in time). If you arrive early, you can leave your bags with the bellhop, and use all the facilities, but expect to wait until exactly 4pm for your room. They did serve some rum punch for free during this time period, as I guess this waiting around is pretty standard. It just came as a surprise because so many other hotels I've stayed at are able to accommodate and make available a room pretty soon after you arrive, even if it's not exactly official check-in time.

Also, and this is nit-picky, the tennis courts on site have to be reserved in hour blocks, and although we reserved it for the last block available - 7pm - there was difficulty getting the keys from staff. We were misdirected a few times and had to go back and forth between the Ground level and the Lobby level about twice.

In all, for a short weekend vacation, this was a suitable and pleasant hotel, with good service, and typically hotel prices.

Room Tip: Try setting up a little further to the left (just past the rocks) on the beach behind the hotel. For...

Moderate room, not like we are hanging out there much. Good breakfast buffet, best stretch of beach along the north shore. Great lounge chair service and wait staff. Salsa bar makes for some entertaining evenings even though we don't salsa dance, we had a fun time watching, and trying.

Close to all the touristy things, like rain forest and old San Juan. Easy taxi ride. No complaints. Great option for first visit.

Room Tip: Partial view is good enough. Go to the beach if you want a beach view!
