La Placita is great place to hang out on Thurs/Fri nights as there are usually a few bands and lots of locals to talk and drink with (also a lot of police) but do not stray out side of the area of La Placita.

This is the place for pre-weekend happy hour that extends up through 11pm. Streets are brimming with people of all ages who just want to dance! Great salsa music fills the air, you can munch on chicken pinchos and fresh seafood salad, watch how cigars are hand-rolled and browse through artists' paintings for sale. Be sure to get some alcapurrias from the bar that was once a mechanic's shop? They sometimes offer a delicious stew too.

Old Covered Market "La placita", the MAPR art museum and gardens, la Laguna del Condado (take a spin in the pedal boats for a water view of the Condado/Miramar skylines), local shops and buildings, a little rundown but authentic PR.

Santurce is a big area and runs the gambit from districts that are notorious slums to upscale residential areas. Overall Miramar and Central Santurce by the Bellas Artes are the areas that are most interesting and look like they are being gentrified, and that's a good thing in this part of town. Santurce is worth checking out because of the museums, local reataurants and historical architecture abound. I can't say I felt totally safe walking around, but in a car its fine, can't say anything about at night. Overall this part of the city is well poised to attracted young urban professionals and entrepreneus if the city can fix the streetscapes a bit and make the place feel a little safer.

Just the other side of the highway from Condado - discover the local arts and culture district with local restaurants, bars, clubs in a non-touristy area. Museum of Art, Contemporary Art, Fine Arts Center, Symphony Hall, Conservatory of Music and several arts centers. Great bus service on Ponce de Leon is much faster than the sporadic bus lines that go past the luxury hotels - so walk 10 minutes and discover the other side of San Juan.
