“This place is good for my marriage!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2008

This was our second visit to The Gallery Inn, we stayed there on our engagement trip to Puerto Rico in 2005 and returned for our third anniversary this past October. During the three years of marriage we have become quite busy and find little time for romance. The wears of building a successful life together has set in on us. We knew we had to get away for our anniversary for a little stress free time to just be together. The Gallery Inn left such a wonderful impression with us during our engagement trip, we knew it would be perfect for the romantic getaway we soo desired. For three days we laid under the orange tree at the pool, drank wine, laughed, sauntered through the inn exploring all the corridors and spent our nights holding hands-strolling through Old San Juan. WOW! The inn's atmosphere is the perfect secret get-away. Beautiful gardens, classical music, deep rich tones, smiling faces who are so pleased to take your every request. The happiness seeping through the corner of those smiles-is just contagious. The Gallery Inn seems to take you in, rub out the knots in your shoulders and delivers you back to the world with a light air under your feet.

The Gallery Inn is a wonderful, peaceful and interesting hotel. It is managed by Jan and she has incredible staff, like Maria-vida, Pashian, Francisco, and Stevie who provide instant service at the front desk. The hotel is located across the street from the Atlantic Ocean and offers incredible views. Jan cooked Thanksgiving dinner at it was a wonderful feast. I highly recommend this Hotel for those who want to rest and relax. There are no TV's or radios available and I got the first good night sleep in a long time there. The Gallery Inn is constructed using stairs between floors---no elevator. If a traveler has an issue with using stairs, as I did---I have Asthma and found climbing stairs problematic----then I do not recommend staying at this wonderful hotel.

You don't go to the Gallery Inn for the amenities. You go for an authentic experience in Old San Juan amid unique surroundings. Very classy, elegant and ecclectic decor. Great views from the rooftop. The bed was a little cramped and musty, no hair dryer, tv, etc (see above for disclaimer).

My husband and I and another couple recently stayed at the Gallery Inn. We had an overnight layover in PR on our way to Bonaire, with our flight leaving the next evening at 7pm. On past trips with this layover we have stayed in Condado, and at the airport. But this time opted for the Gallery Inn and are so thankful we did!

Our 2 rooms were up on the 2nd floor one overlooking the ocean and one overlooking a quiet side street. While the rooms are not huge we felt they were cozy and well appointed. We have a Temperpedic bed at home so it was nice to have this comfort on the 1st night of our vacation.

We absolutely feel in love with this inn. The night of our arrival we went to a food fair a few blocks away and had some amazing local cuisine. We then came back to the hotel and started to explore some of the many rooms and garden areas. We found our way to the pool area and lounged on the daybed. Earlier we had seen an employee of the hotel carrying a tray of cheese and wine up to a room. This gave us an idea, we used the phone right by the day bed and called the front desk and asked them about the cheese tray. They said they would be happy to supply one enough for 4 of us and a bottle of wine. All this at midnight!!! And it was not overpriced. When I signed for the bill the next day the cheese plate was $12 and $30 for the wine. It was such a memorable experience! The next morning we had breakfast which consisted of bread with homemade jams, fresh juice, fruit and cereal. It is not a "hot" breakfast but it gave us plenty of energy to explore Old San Juan. After hitting the city we came back to relax for a few hours before we had to head to the airport. While relaxing we explored as much as the Gallery Inn as we could, even taking a nap on an oversized couch in the music room. Everywhere you look there is so much to discover. We fancied that this place must be the best place in the world to play hide and go seek! Maybe next time!

We were also lucky enough to meet Jan, the owner and artist of all the beautiful sculptures and painting located throughout the Inn. She took time out of her day to talk with us and show us the birds. The staff was gracious enough to look after our bags since check out is noon.

If you enjoy whimsical, unique, casual , unhurried places than this is the right place for you! If you like crowds, and cookie cutter hotels then do not stay here - you will be disappointed.

We look forward to staying here again and you can bet we will do so for more than one night!

While photos are often worth a 1000 words, they do not adequately capture the Gallery Inn. Travelers beware. If staying at an old and musty art studio with greenery is what you have in mind than the Gallery Inn would be ideal. If you're looking for a well run boutique style inn with attention to detail and basic amenities with the traveler in mind, than do not book the Gallery Inn.
Definitely not a place for the physically impaired as there are many uneven walkways and stairs throughout.
Our room smelled of mildew, lacked basic niceties for example 1) hangers 2) toilet paper on an actual paper roller 3) soap / dispenser in the shower 4) suitcase rack 5) nice towels 6) decent pillows 7) iron and iron board 8) radio.
We were awakened all night with the slamming of an iron gate and the next morning woke to the sweeping of the hall floor at 7:30 AM.
Breakfast and Happy Hour appetizers were almost exactly the same every day and required very little effort. As guests, we helped ourselves and carted food tol tables throughout the inn. Yet, even the basic courtesy of providing a tray to cart items wasn't even made available. Fellow travelers that we met at the Gallery Inn shared similar impressions. We could not wait to check out.

"We have been visiting The Gallery Inn, top of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, for over 15 years as our lay over to the Caribbean. We feel we should share this wonderful place of peace and wonder, a home away from home, where you are made to feel welcome by the owners and staff. As we travel all over we are always looking for different unique places to stay; and this is one that is a must. Every turn you take you enter a different ambiance. You always see something you missed on the last visit. The Inn has no exterior signs letting you know of its existence and over looks a panoramic view of the Atlantic, the Old Forts and the city. From the time you enter the secure gates of this unbelievable collection of military buildings, six in all, you are truly enchanted with the rare collection of tropical plants - many of them night blooming, and five large, colorful parrots, all named after famous artists. They sit in the tropical patios for you to observe as they play and eat, holding small cups of food with their feet. I enjoy their happy chatter, singing and whistles. Jan usually has one of them one her shoulder.
Five levels lead you through narrow passage ways with four foot thick walls. Much like a museum, you can visit the beautiful Music room, the Banquet rooms, and the many Art rooms. Then you reach the roof top deck were you can envision the Spanish Galleons entering into Old San Juan Port! Today supper cruise ships take their place. This Boutique Hotel of 22 unique rooms each one being deferent and filled with art collected and created by the owner Jan D'Esopo. Then to top this all you sleep on the wonderful Temperpetic beds that are so incredibly comfortable. We love the newly remodeled areas. The well designed pool with sculpture and water falls, and the Alamanda Gardens, with its umbrella covered seating area. All this has a wonderful relaxing feeling and constant cool breezes. They include a continental breakfast & happy hour of nice wines, beer, home made breads, cheeses and much more.
Your with in walking distace to everything in the area, lots to do and see.
Manuco, Jan's husband keeps a cannon from the Regiamiento Fijo which is taken regularly to their "reenactments" at the forts. Even Barrack Obama came to see this special place during his visit last May! Donna Killman, San Diego."

My fiance and I have been together for 13 happy years and were looking for a very special, romantic getaway...and we certainly found it! The Gallery Inn in Old San Juan is truly beautiful and unique. Our experience at the inn can only be described as authentic Puerto Rico with a special essence. As soon as we checked in, we were encouraged to go off and explore the inn. We were surrounded by breathtaking artwork everywhere we went. The rooms are spacious and romantic. The gardens are lush, open and bright, also decorated with many distinct pieces of art. The pool is lovely, especially when lit at night. The view from the top deck is magnicficent. The staff is friendly and extremely accomodating. The owners, Jan and Manuco, are delightful. The resident birds are charming. The inn is cozy and comfortable and the price is reasonable. Our stay felt more like an extended visit at a friend's home (an extraordinary home) than a stay at a "hotel". If you and yours are heading to San Juan, PR, and want to stay at a remarkably special place, the Gallery Inn is the premiere choice. Thanks Jan and Manuco!

Sincerely,
Maxine & Ed
