Staff very friendly and accommodating. The parrots provide an entertaining diversion. The 300 year old building contains many plants, sculptures, and paintings that create a whimsical atmosphere. Even a bust of President Obama and Michele. The owner Jan and her staff sits with the clients and provides guidance to local activities. My wife enjoyed the seclusion, the different patios, and the calm atmosphere. We will definitely stay at the Gallery again. The food was delicious. The Facility has numerous stairs and navigation can be challenging.

If you are fussy about everything being in tip top shape, are uninterested in Old San Juan and its history, hate parrots, have no curiosity about a highly eclectic art collection, and basically prefer your vacations clearly marked and predictable, the Gallery Inn isn't for you. You can save yourself the disappointments, go somewhere else and leave the Inn to those os us who are fascinated by all of the above and willing to tolerate various small inconveniences for the sake of a unique and intimate experience.

The Inn is a maze, filled with masks, paintings, and sculpture, much of it by or about the owner, Jan D'Osoto. Each room is different, but they are all consistent with this being a four hundred year old set of historic buildings which demand constant attention on a scale difficult for many of us to imagine. This is true of all the buildings in Old San Juan's historic district. Beautiful hIgh beamed ceilings in the Spanish colonial style, very little closet space, small bathrooms, great canopied beds, and an ideal location for spending days exploring Old San Juan on foot, coming back for a break at the hotel to read and relax in various niches throughout the hotel, out on the patio or beside the tiny, unusual pool, which is great for dipping. Wonderful restaurants are within walking distance. Dragonfly is our favorite.

Be prepared for an unforgettable time in every way, with all of the plusses and minuses that implies. We've been back three times, and will return whenever we can. Jan D'Osoto is a remarkable 80 years old, and herself a piece of San Juan history. The house is also her home.

Room Tip: "Artist rooms", which are the least expensive, tend to be small and on inside corridors opening onto small courtyards. In traditional Spanish colonial style, they have no windows and minimal closets. The more expensive "Colonial" rooms often have views of the ocean and are bright and airy. Expect narrow stairways, and ask for help with luggage or leave it in the luggage room.

We stayed at the gallery inn from 3/1-3/3/14 and it was alright. The hotel itself is a unique place and each room is quaintly decorated.

Our particular room did not have an attached bathroom - we had a key for one down the hall. We were unaware of this setup prior to our booking. The air conditioner is centrally controlled for multiple rooms so we had to call staff to adjust the settings.

As many other reviewers have noted, it's a very noisy place due to the proximity to the street which is worsened by cruising party-goers on the weekend nights.

The continental breakfast is nothing special and for two small, incorrectly made & very lacking omelets, we were charged $26.84. There are many nearby gems in Old San Juan that I would recommend far & above for their food choices.

The staff was in general - not helpful nor attentive to the normal needs of travelers who are paying over $250/night for a hotel stay - ie basic help with luggage, change at the front desk, nor did anyone show us around the property. For such a unique hotel, the staff doesn't do a good job of highlighting what it has to offer nor do they treat you like a true guest.

Overall, it was a great location, but given the opportunity to return to San Juan, the Gallery Inn will not be on our itinerary.

Thank you so much for your review, and I'm very sorry your stay was disappointing. Of particular concern to me is your review of our staff. We try very hard to be warm and welcoming and full of information for arriving guests. This house has been my home for over 50 years, and the staff is much like family. I will make sure we offer that same "you're like family" attitude to our guests, as well.
Our ocean-view suites are always our most popular, but they do face a busy street, so are the least quiet of our rooms, as well. When alternate accommodations are available, we are more than happy to move guests to a room more of their liking. We want everyone to love their time here, and I wish we could have done more for you.
Thank you, as well, for appreciating our uniqueness. All of us here at the Gallery Inn need to keep in mind what a fascinating property this is, and to be better at making our guests feel at home.

Following the comments from Trip advisor we booked here. No exterior signage, policeman directed us to the door. Interesting old structure. Dark inside. We carried our luggage up two sets of stairs and then up the tiny spiral stairs to the third floor. Hope there's never a fire. Small room, large scruffy deck with view of rooftops. No window, tiny bath. Public spaces confusing and dark.If you like roughing it at $250 a night you'll be happy.

This is one of the best places I ever stayed at. The architecture alone is stunning, but mingled with the eclectic style of art , color, landscape and unique nooks to hang out and absorb....simply cool.
Mikey went above and beyond what I would ever expect. You know Mikey is a gift for the hotel with his precision to details and genuine warmth and professionalism. We chose to have dinner here which is not our usual choice, and were pleased with the consistency of flavor, presentation and entire meal provided. I can't wait to return, and felt this was a true gem in all sense of the word.

Room Tip: rooms near road are loud until traffic slows down and starts up the early morning so if you want to sleep in, get a room more centrally located if possible or crank up the A/C:) It didn't bother us as we got up early...
